Actually I have been posted in a very rural branch currently and am planning to bring my bike for my daily commute (from Chikmagalur town to Tarikere) in Karnataka. The one way distance is around 40km, consists of good but winding, narrow roads, inclines, a small ghat section with 3-4 hairpins. As the bus service is less, am planning to take my 5 yr FZ to perfrom in this extreme climate. I do have the below doubts

    1. As my bike is at home for a month and hasn't been serviced for around 6 months what are the major replacements I should do it. My bikes sep 2009 model (without kickstart).

    2. Should I make any specific changes (like engine oil) as my driving will be mostly in ghat section?

    3. My bike has run around 22k km. The tyres are in good condition with the grooves still visible. Should I replace them now itself..
First thing, get it properly serviced i.e. change engine oil, air filter, check the condition of brake pads (replace if necessary), clutch and accelerator cables. Also change the battery, since its been 5 years old and you don't want to get stuck in remote areas with a dead battery and without a kick starter. I would also suggest you to get a new set of tyres as your riding will be on ghats and other not so friendly roads. Use semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil for slightly longer drain intervals.

I am suggesting you to replace/change parts just because you said you don't get much spare time and also the route doesn't look all that busy. You should take chances and also five years is more than enough for the stock parts.

    Ride safe and have fun.

If the parts are fine in condition then there is no need to change them just give them a good thorough inspection, and if they require changing only then change them, else go for routine service, also get the carburetor properly serviced if the vehicle hasn't been ridden for a long time.

The regular servicing should do. Do change the tyres. Rains will kill whatever tiny grip you have.
OT. Took this road a couple of weeks ago. Sexy as hell.

            Hi Fellas,

Can any experienced folk jot down the symptoms indicating an unavoidable engine work, especially cylinder & head?

            TIA

Well I am not an expert, just my observations
              1. White smoke - indicates busted rings
              2. Excessive knocking sound from the engine
              3. loss of power

              Cheers

I would be buying FZ-S Version 2 this month. Any opinion on that bike? How much mileage to expect?

Only after riding the bike, we can comment on how it runs.
And mileage certainly would be much better
If the bike has reached the showrooms (i have no idea about this) then you should test ride both the bikes (v2 and the older one) and see how much different these are.

                  Ride safe and have fun.

It would be arriving in showroom probably within 2weeks.
btw what mileage does the current FZ-s gives? I heard some say 30-35kmpl while others saying 40+.

Not an expert, below are some mentioned symptoms:

                      1) Loss of power.
                      2) Increase in engine oil consumption.
                      3) White smoke from exhaust (indicates busted piston ring).

If all the above symptoms aren't there and you still feel something a miss in the bike, best will be to open and get it checked.

                      Cheerz!!

Haven't read any review about the FZ / FZ-S V2 on internet. Although, the power has been tweaked for fuel efficiency, bike is 3kgs lighter than previous FZ / FZ-S, seats are bigger and better. Industry experts say that with such tweak in Power, Mileage is bound to go atleast above 45kmpl to 50kmpl easily.

                      Cheerz!!

Thanks alot, If its true than thats a really big relief to me. Anyways, are there any additions or customizations i should get done in the bike while buying. But main thing is i dont want to lower its fuel efficiency.

Noticed that there is play of chain on rear sprocket, the play is about 2-3mm sideways. Chain slackness is fine. Went to the SVC to get rubber cush of rear drum replaced, the SVC guy said this is normal and the rubber bushes are fine. Periodic maintenance of chain is being done.

Has anybody faced the same? If so, is this normal?

When is the last time you have changed the rubber cush. There will be strain on the chain. The rubber cush cost about Rs.35 only. It is a simple DIY.
                              Cheers,
