Hi Vishal,Originally posted by vishal monster yamaha View PostI just bought some chain cleaner and lube from a motorcycle essentials shop. the brand is 'rustlic 631'. the cleaner costs 70/- and the lube 180/- combined cost 250/-. they are suitable for use in almost all mechanical components and on painted surfaces too. they also prevent rust and corrosion.
first i put my bike on the main stand after a short ride and put it in gear and
ran it so the chain could get warmed up.
next i generously sprayed on the cleaner and waited for 10mins. it worked rather well and most of the muck and grime dripped off. just to be sure, i gave it a good rubbing using a toothbrush.
after the chain appeared reasonably clean, i started spraying the lube on it. the lube is white lithium grease which is very soft, lathery and bubbly. i applied it generously. the chain became white in colour. i only applied one coat and left it to work itself into the nooks and crannies. sprayed some on the sprocket too. after 15mins i took it out for a ride and found that the annoying sound had disappeared. after some reading, i found out that this lube only lasts around 400 kms max and the can only lasts about 7-9 sprays.
so this will suffice for the next 3000 kms. do the math- 250 rs. for 3000km if you do it yourself. the same thing if done with motul sprays costs around 700+ and if done at the svc 6 times(every 500 kms) costs around 700/-.if you're using yamalube, this will save u thousands. it beats Yamalube/Motul/svc hands down for VFM.
what say guys?
i also plan on fitting an alarm system. Are there any tips I can get from you guys??
I use Motul for O-ring chain. Make sure your lube is specified for that use. If not then you will not face the problem now but in the long run the chain will wear out fast.
Do not use Alarm system. Yamaha has informed not to use these hence dealers now don't provide it as an accessory.

my experience with my the monster (12k on odo)
I aint a writer of sorts.. but would like to pen down my experience with my monster.
I bought the Lava Red FZ 16 (love the name of the color
) on 24-Sept-2009. Before that i had read the ownership thread of FZ here, and was pretty sure that im buying the best bike among the 150cc category. Till date i havent encountered any major problems with the bike.
I didnt adhere to the run-in pattern stated in the svc manual, and followed the rip-out pattern from the day one (ie ripping every gear with full load on bike).
VITAL STATS:
Odo reading : 12k kms, svcs done at Yamaha Factory Shop , Malad, Mumbai
Mileage : 40kmpl; min: 28kmpl(bad fuel) max: 54kmpl(splendor style riding)
Top Speed (odo readings) : 123kmph (single); 110kmph(with pillion), both achieved with fully ducked on the tank. The stability of the bike at these speed is mind boggling. not a single vibration other than the road is felt. Just love it. Also it achieves 60-65kmph @ 5000rpm in fifth gear, depends upon the slope of the tarmac.
Ride Experience : when my bro rode the bike for the first time he said that its an SUV of a Bike, you never feel that you will lose the balance even it tightest situation. SIMPLY AWESOME. The suspension is a bit hard, but that imparts the excellent handling so its forgiven. The seats are depressing, it takes almost 10mins to regain senses on my bum after 1hr+ ride.
Bike Condition : Has a nasty scratch on top left of the tank, it was done purposely by some one on the very second day of my bike; rest is all in mint condition. Zero paint fade, thanks to regular polish/wax schedules. Currently using the Collinite 845wax. No rusting on body parts except the center stand, i always lubricate all exposed metal parts with castrol 2t chain oil (except the chain), and get the chain lubricated by the yamaha svc guys. I just cant stand a dirty bike. I still get comments from people "bike kab liya?" / "abhi liya?"
There is no brake fade even after 12k kms (just love yamaha for this). I always use both brakes together.
Damages: (dont remember the exact cost)
1. LH Mirror - apprx. Rs. 150 (broken)
2. Brake light bulb - apprx. Rs. 30 (stopped working)
3. Clutch cable - apprx. Rs. 30 (had lost its tension)
apart from these the bike had fallen from its stand which change the handle shape a bit. This was rectified by hammering it to place. Also the Rear left signal light was hanging from it housing so i stuck it with some feviquick; works surprisingly well.
Had 5 punctures in rear tyre (3 times on the same spot.) and one in front tyre
Pending damages : recently my LCD meter started fading some characters. went to get it replaced but the cost (Rs. 2300) and the fact that the original odo reading will be reseted deterred me from doing it. My dad said that just clean the contact points and check if its working (he is Masters in Electronics, so i cant argue that). So this is still pending, will do it after rains.
Alterations done : Changed the stock horn, and adjusted the level of the headlights, thats it.
Alterations to be done : want to change the air filter to k&n or change the exhaust of the bike to the daytona one. Still under research.
all in all
I SIMPLY LOVE IT...

i had mentioned earlier that i had issues of sudden shut offs of the engine in this thread and was advice to take it to SVC..
did my 2nd service a week back and seems they dint find any problems.
today while going to work i got the worst of it..it happened at a uphill slope with bumper to bumper traffic..
it just went off and had to restart twice and accelerate hard in order to move forward.
i have noticed that the last time it happened;was again at another incline..
the bike is perfectly fine otherwise, what could be this niggling issue!!Our bikes can go from 0 - Stupid in less than "I wonder if this will be a good idea"

What was the fuel level at the slope? Was in reserve?

Hi Ari,Originally posted by ariendj View Postit had 2 bars on the fuel indicator.
May that is why the engine was shut off. At the incline (depends on how stiff the incline is) the fuel is pushed back causing improper fuel supply to the engine that is why the engine was shut off.

i can understand thatOriginally posted by alto View PostOther companies are not fool that they charge more for their products. Those products are also very good as the premium they charge.
. nowadays thanks to improvements in manufacturing processes, o-ring and for that matter even non o-rings chain only last for a certain no. of kms even with lubricating them from time to time
. then whats the point in spending that much extra on premium products. the lube I used is used by the local mechanic near my house and hes regarded as the best guy in my part of the city. i blindly trust him. it was on his advice that i got my lubing done. anyways, ill give a ride-report after 400kms to tell you how well the lube worked
. maybe that will change your opinion.

it can be used for o-rings too. i live in a dusty area. by that i mean some of the roads near my home are not even laid. i am required to lube my chain about twice as often as other riders. this method works for guys like meOriginally posted by abhijitkn View PostHi Vishal,

. there is one guy who says he will fit it without cutting any wires. I thought yamaha doesn't provide warranty for electricals.

It is not abt warranty, but the owner of the showroom told me that they received specific instructions from Yamaha not to install these he told me the reason but didn't remember.
