ok thanks...Originally posted by muztariq View Postthats done quite easily.. There is a 'u' shaped insert in one of the links of the chain.. Remove it, chain will open up.. Remove one or whatever links you want to remove like the strap of the watch.. Replace the 'u' shaped pin and thats it..
Its absolutely safe.. But get it done from a mechanic. There is some effort involved, I cant do it myself even tho I know..
I just have to see whether this chain has the u clip!! I think thats there in every chain :-)Timon: Orange Yamaha FZ16 2009

I would strictly advise against going on with the same chain and reducing links. You wouldn't want to be stuck in the middle of the road with your chain snapping would you?? Average life of an FZ chain and sprocket is 15 - 20,000 kms.
Buy a new set of genuine chain & sprockets which only costs approx 1300 bucks.

+1. Not at all advisable to reuse worn out chain by cutting out links. It's a thing from past.Originally posted by shv18 View PostI would strictly advise against going on with the same chain and reducing links. 40-50k will be splendor story onlyOriginally posted by muztariq View PostUsually chain sets lasts for 40 to 50 k..
I was asked to replace the chain set of my old splendour for the same reason at 25k.. It went on till 50 k.. And then also the reason of replacement was just noisey drag from the sprokets.. Just see if there is a possibilty of removing one or two links in between the chain.
FZ sprocket will be done by 25-30k even if someone manage to get links removed from chain and reuse them.
26k km old sprocket, still it was going fine without fail.

+1....and I also would add - sorry if that is taken badly but so be it! - that giving such advises is dangerous, reveals total ignorance and is totally irresponsible! If one does not care for his life (or for his legs when a chain snaps: we are not talking bicycles here!), he should at least have consideration for others.Originally posted by shv18 View PostI would strictly advise against going on with the same chain and reducing links. It also amazes me to continually read on this otherwise remarkable forum that the nearly one and only concern by people who have bought such macho-show-bikes as our FZ-16 and other Fazers keep on trying to save a couple of Rupees here and there! I have known some real "cheapos", but some here are beyond anything I've seen!Last edited by Lucky Luke; 02-21-2012, 06:36 PM.When I do something stupid, my consolation is to know that I'll do the worse one only once!

^^^ +1... someone is going to hurt himself or worst; kill himself following such nutty advice... we seem to have some real Einsteins' over here who don't seem to understand the implications of what they are suggesting....Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window.

hi, its time for me to step in before it gets dirtier than this.Originally posted by abhimanyu31 View Post^^^ +1... someone is going to hurt himself or worst; kill himself following such nutty advice... we seem to have some real Einsteins' over here who don't seem to understand the implications of what they are suggesting....
I was very skeptical to join forums like these just because of this. A healthy debate is always welcome but it should not go below a level.
Just attaching pictures and links of a GSXR1000 chain being reduced to fit a new swing arm.
When a 1000 cc bike can manage to do that a 150 cc can surely do.
The advice was for the guy who was looking for a low cost (but not "CHEAP") alternative to a battery sometime back.. If his chain is just loose he can very well manage to do what I advised.
I am quite senior to biking and consider the mates here as brothers.. A healthy debate is always welcome but please don't go beyond a level.
Every guy who invested in a Fazer or an FZ is well off or else he would not have bought the costliest bike in the category and put synthetics which costs nearly the same as a chain set.. but that doesnt mean we advice him to change a chain set just because he cant tighten it further!!
May be the life of the chain set is 20K. Dear Nand.. please replace your bike's chain set then.. ;-)
Quote from the website - Since the swingarm is significantly longer, you'll need to custom-cut your chain. Wrap the chain around the sprockets and mark where the ends meet. If you plan to dragrace in a class with a maximum wheelbase, set the wheel in position for that length and cut the chain one link shorter than the chain measures out. Street riders can simply cut the chain at the most convenient link.
In front of HAYABUSA our bike can also be considered as "bicycles"Last edited by muztariq; 02-21-2012, 08:09 PM.

well i dont know whether this should be done or not.... but seeing that a hayabusa can do it then doing it on an fz16 shouldnt be a problem....
plus if thought logically....
chains are basically links and not a single string which will loose its strength....
the strength of the small cylinderical bars in the chain holding the chain will be the same even if they are attached to another link....
in my opinion one should not shorten the links if the chain has been worn out... but then again chain lengthening beyond a certain point can be termed as an indication of a worn out chain??
also how one can see if the chain and sprockets have worn out or not??
because at 21k km my rear sprocket looks as good as new... but the chain can be tightened only for a couple of times more.....Timon: Orange Yamaha FZ16 2009

It can be done , It is effective in a way , but dangerous too ... because, the chain is already elongated throughout it's length and not at one point that we can remove the links and it's good ... if you have it coming off the rear sprocket , it is pretty bad . chances of it jumping off the sprocket and locking up the rear is there .Originally posted by muztariq View PostFrom your description it appears that the chain is just loose.. Usually chain sets lasts for 40 to 50 k.. I strongly believe that by removing two three links in the chain will solve your purpose.

the splendor chains are closed chains , and with a little maintenance will go a long way , these open chains may not last that much .People ask me , why are you cribbing about the BHP ? to them I say "MORE is never ENOUGH" xbhp.com

what about in between new and worn out??? when can one say that the chain has worn out??Originally posted by deville_56 View Post@chaincutters
Cutting a new chain and cutting a worn out chain are entirely different stories. Worn out = End of life. FZ got lot more torque than Splendor. Better change than taking chances. Peace
@nand thats what by taking of a few links if the chain is shorter it wont jump off the sprocket?? will it???Originally posted by nand15 View PostIt can be done , It is effective in a way , but dangerous too ... because, the chain is already elongated throughout it's length and not at one point that we can remove the links and it's good ... if you have it coming off the rear sprocket , it is pretty bad . chances of it jumping off the sprocket and locking up the rear is there .
