It is a normal saying by everyone to kick start the engine during your first ride everyday, I mean every morning. This same thing was told by the sales personnel during the delivery. Is it real or myth? I just don't want to be in false dilemma. And also my ride daily is max 20kms, so it is safe I use the starter everytime? And also my bike takes a bit longer time to get started than the normal process. Considering all this I'm kick starting everyday. If there is really no purpose of doing that then I will drop that method. Please suggest

The salesman definitely has a dinosaur brain or a dinosaur ride!! All original FZs came with self starter motor option only and none of them have had any failures with cranking up the engine barring a few..most likely because of improper maintenance.. Coming back to the original query.. It is absolutely safe to start your ride using the starter motor otherwise Yamaha would have specifically mentioned it in the manual right? Don't believe what every salesman or friend tells you. Go through your ride's manual first, understand the basics of the bike.. It will help you understand her better. Like Abhimanyu31 always keeps on telling me,"Your bike speaks to you.. Listen to her properly.." She will give you proper signs before giving you any major problem in the middle of the road. So don't worry finish your run-in properly and follow the regular scheduled maintenance, everything will be fine.

      Cheers,

You are lucky to have people like Kamala Yamaha, who do the service in front of you and also within 3-4 hours max. Here in cochin, kerala, we give the bike in the morning and they give it us back by evening only. Wish Kamala Yamaha had branch in cochin. Wouldn't have minded even if paid 200 Rs. extra.

Yes we are lucky to have professional people but getting things done in front took time ... Building relations and the art of PR giri helps that's it! Find the source and develop your relations with them... May be things will work out better or the same freedom enjoyed here in Mumbai.

          • even i find the kicker useless. had posted long back that I could not start the bike on cold mornings using the kicker but the self start worked at the first crank.

            • Uneven wear of sprockets.

              Hi guys
My sprockets are wearing out unevenly . The ride is not smooth because it causes a wobble at speeds of 50 and above. I tried searching this thread. Couldn't find anything much about this.
Could someone shed some light on the cause of uneven sprocket wear and a solution to it.
Your bike is a part of you....

I feel check the rear tire alignment and the rear wheel bearing as well.. I suspect the rear tire is wobbling a bit.. You let one of your friends ride your bike and check the rear tire while he is riding, if you see the rear tire wobbling a bit then may be the alignment or the bearing might have gone kaput.

Others may be able to pinpoint the problem better.

                • Finally got it done!!!

This could be the subject of a whole new thread, perhaps in association with "Mad Mik" since we both had to suffer the lies, incompetence and wrongdoing from the same "supplier" (automotivespartsshop/ Haryono Adigunawan, in Indonesia) but essentially since we both have our FZ's in 200 cc now! Would we start this new thread, and would the moderator accept such a modification that is far from recommendable, we would certainly have to call it: "the (bumpy) road to FZ 20"!!!

But WOW! that pushes well, anyway!

Having ridden Mik's bike, which was on the road with its conversion done before mine, I must say that our bikes are very different, as mine, which is less extreme, pushes regularly from 2k rpm with superb torque - MUCH more than previous 153cc - and obviously wants to let the horse free once reaching 5k. rpm....but the bike is still running-in (NO "Motoman" method!) and I treat it gently. Have been shortly wide open throttle, though, and going near 7k. rpm...mmmmmhhh!: that will be a goood and quick bike!

Mik's bike still needs tuning as it gives torque above 4/ 5k rpm only, which is not that surprising with his even bigger valves (29 - 34!)!

But you guys are certainly eager to know in more detail what has been done, right? Quite a lot, and more to come! Shortly:

                  - Original cylinder bored up from 58 to 66mm high tolerance = 200cc.
                  - TDR Racing 66mm. hi-comp. forged piston
                  - 29mm. Mikuni constant velocity carburetor (instead of original 27), with special attachment made in order to be able to fit the throttle position sensor
                  - Intake manifold inside diameter increased from 27 to 29 near carb., reducing to 28 at cylinder head intake port
                  - Intake port diameter enlarged from 26 to 28, with about 80% "throat" (= diameter 26/ 27) just before the valve guide, 28 again after .
                  - Original intake valve seat diameter increased from 26 to 28 (= maximum possible), three angles
                  - SD Racing intake valve diameter 30 instead of 28, with two angles
                  - Combustion chamber valve pockets reworked for better flow, and volume of combustion chamber increased to 19cc (stock=14cc) for compression ratio 10.5: 1 with high comp. piston (stock= 9.5 :1)
                  - NGK Iridium spark plug
                  - Exhaust valve SD Racing diameter 26.5 instead of 24, lightened and polished, two angles
                  - New valve seals
                  - Exhaust original valve seat diameter increased from 22 to 24 (= maximum possible), three angles.
                  - Exhaust port diameter increased form 21.5 to 24, with 80% throat after valve guide (= diameter 22.5), polished
                  - Custom made tuned exhaust header pipe (temporary= test)
                  - Akrapovic muffler for 200cc. engine (with adjustable db. killer set to maximum flow)
                  - Tungsten racing clutch springs

There was no need to adjust the valve spring height which was still near original (0.5mm more compression) due to slightly shorter stem length.

                  Still to be done:
                  - K7N air filter (flat= actually more area than the cone one)
                  - 15 teeth gearbox sprocket (from Pulsar)
                  - Redo exhaust header pipe in stainless steel, with longer radius lower bend and three stage diameter increase before muffler
                  - Most importantly: install oil cooler!

                  - IF (???) any can be found: dual band CDI, but that is really suited for this bike, including TPS information etc...
                  - Maybe (???): high lift Race Concepts camshaft, to increase valve curtain area: will ask Joel his opinion.

Dynamic compression is now 13 (stock= 12) measured with compression meter= perfect!

                  That's it, folks!
Will give you more reports and perhaps video later (and picture after cleaning my bike: had a heavy rain yesterday!)

How will it perform compared to Joel Joseph/ Race concept impressive 135 kmh and acceleration????....Will see!

                  • Got my bike serviced on Saturday from Kamla Yamaha - Lower Parel, Mumbai.

Some miscreant tried to break the left side panel while trying to steal petrol. I have a petrol lock and looks like he tried breaking the side panel to try and find an alternate method to steal it.

Kamla Yamaha didn't had the silver side panels nor did they have the black or grey ones which comes with the new FZ/Fazer.

Since I had already done oil change the previous week opted not to do it again. Also I had this 'Phut Phut' sound coming from exhaust from last 1.5 Yrs and which was due to AIS as pointed out correctly by Ninad. Got the AIS replaced and now the 'Phat Phat' sound has disappeared while deaccelerating.

This is the service cost with Breakup:
AIS (Air Induction System) - 470 Rs
                    Labor - 100 Rs
                    Servicing - 300 Rs
                    Carburetor Cleaning - 100 Rs

                    Service Tax - 61 Rs

                    Total: 1031 Rs

Got the carb cleaned as I was facing issues with very low mileage (~31-33 KMPL). Jaykumar was my regular mechanic who handled it swiftly. He also showed some seal in the Carb which was showing signs of aging.

Rakesh and Jaykumar asked me if my bike was choking and shutting off abruptly. I said that I haven't faced this issue yet. Cost of that seal is 1200 Rs and they said that we can get it replaced later as you are still not facing the issue.

They got some water removed which entered the in tank. Also the logo above the brake light got stolen. I got a new one from Kamla Yamaha for 18 Rs. I was surprised to see the cost of that logo as the same one is sold for +35Rs by Ganesh Yamaha (Vikhroli). Now I firmly believe that Ganesh Yamaha are nothing but cheats and whatever review I gave about them from last 2.5 Yrs were absolutely correct.

Also got one news this time that Kamla Yamaha is shifting their service center from Lower Parel to Shivdi this month end or early next month. They said its just next to Skoda Service center in Shivdi. They also said that there are around 10 service bay and we can come without any appointment for service when we shift there. Looks like Yamaha SVC's are ramping up their service bay for the scooter launch.
I think if they dont increase the service bay now, then after the Yamaha scooter launch there will be a fight to get our bikes serviced on time.

Liked the professionalism of the SVC guys. They were commited as always and liked the way they delivered what they promised.

Better get all the cables replaced. I know most of them wont do it till it's broken, but to be on a safer side get it done. I assume that your ride is over 2 Yrs now and it would be a good option to get it done.
Clutch cable, Accelerator cable, Choke cable, bleed the brake oil and replace it with new one DOT3/DOT4 should work, check the condition of Spark Plug and get it replaced if required.

For forks I would say that get both the seals replaced with new and oil changed in both of them.

                              Hi,
Post run-in, the mileage may increase or remain constant. A personal suggestion... never keep the bike running on reserve fuel constantly... always keep it above reserve... in the long run otherwise, thanks to the horrible fuel quality and petrol adulteration prevalent in Indian petrol bunks, a lot of gunk/dirt material may get in the fuel lines leading to your bike coughing up and stall at times. Post 5000 kms of ownership once in a blue moon, use System-G (Costs around Rs. 270/-) will keep the tank clean and keep your ride healthy.

                              Cheers,
