            • Hey,

Was hoping there would be some discussion on the Unicorn.
Like I said in one of my earlier posts I would be getting myself a Unicorn soon. And I did. Last Monday i.e 23rd March 09 the bike was delivered. I ofcourse got to start using the bike only on Thursday 26th March 09.

Some observations if I had to compare it to the first lot of Unicorns, since my younger brother has one.

I rode down to mysore and back yesterday out of the sheer need to ride. My original plan was to ride upto ooty since I had work along the way in Masinagudi, but due to a bad headache the day before that plan went outta the window. So last morning just sat and rode. The bike read some 70km on the clock.

I'm gonna refer to my brothers Unicorn as Uni 1 and mine as Uni 2 for the comparisons.

Uni 1 has also done the same trip after a rebore recently, and it felt so much more calm and settled riding at 70-80kmph on its runin run. Uni 2 on the other hand refused to settle at even 60kmph. But funnily was a little more smoother and calm between 70-80kmph.

Uni 1 with a full tank reached a little below full by the time I crossed mysore towards Nanjangud. Uni 2 (I think the fuel guage is not workin) with a full tank hasn;t moved even after touching mysore and getting back home. On openin the tank there has been depletion of fuel alright

Uni 1 would easily lurch forward when a sudden burst of power was needed without complaining. Uni 2 needs to be coaxed by shifting down a gear to get a burst of power (now am I to assume that because its a new engine off the assembly line compared to a rebored engine in Uni 1)

Uni 1 and Uni 2 engine temperatures are skin burning hot when touched for less than a second on the lower part of the engine. Again I think not as bad as getting ur self burnt when u touch a bullet engine.

Uni 1 would jump all over the road everytime a car or bus overtook. Uni 2 only if either got too close to over take.

Uni 2 has a higher or thicker seat foam thereby making the seating postion higher than Uni 1 (again, maybe because of useage on uni 1 and considerin the seat foam has never been replaced, it could have settled or compressed)

Uni 1 does not have an electric start compared to Uni 2. My point being, does the starter motor disengage after the engine fire or free wheels with the engine all the way, since Uni 2 has a whirring sound when the engine is running compared to Uni 1

Actually these seem more like queries than observations.. So anyone else who has similar observations do tell..

              • Also forgot to add the gear ratios seem a little different as well.. Uni 1 revs at lower speeds compared to Uni 2.. Example 70kmph on Uni 1 is about 6200rpm and 70kmph on Uni 2 is 6600rpm

Maybe the gear shifting pattern is not so smooth when one's wearing floaters and its near-perfect when one's wearing shoes... If the problem occurs very frequently when wearing shoes, then it needs further investigation else it can be concluded that "Most of the problems related to bike are due to the connection between handle & saddle"

                    @naptrap: U did a full-run even in its run-in period ???

that's probably why he's having those engine/pickup issues he was speaking about.

a full run as in riding at speeds of 80kmph for 200-300kms of highway riding, yes!!

you mean 'break-in' and not run in? It should be fine. Although manufacturers do not recommend breaking in, a good number of people believe this is the ideal way. Better than run-in.

Its all matter of individual perception, some might strictly restrict to run-in riding conditions (within 4k rpm), some might not agree with run-in conditions and ride like a free spirit without any inhibitions... Its ur bike after all, you make the choice...

I think you can run-in like that provided you change the engine oil almost everyday during the first week and every alternate day during second week. And then increase the frequency during third and fourth week and so on.
