Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

        • I went to the Service center a week ago and told them about low pickup issue. They adjusted the tappet settings but now the bike is idling at between 1.5-2k and the engine is getting hot while riding.
Can any new uni owners tell me about the pickup on their bike, I feel as if the bike lags compared to even 125cc bikes in lowers gears. Will be going for 2nd serviving this month end so need to know about this issue.

          • Hi all,

I've been experiencing a missing in my unicorn, it occurs mostly during cold conditions, night etc but the missing is there even though it has run some 10kms.. When you down shift and start to throttle the bike doesnt respond for a second or two, there would be a jerk as if no fuel flows in, and then after a delay it is back to normal. I noticed that the missing occurs when you release the throttle and reapplying it. The bike has done 24k kms, recently serviced, running on mobil ss oil(10w40) for past 500-600kms. The issue started after the service, is it because of the oil?

I heard about this issue with my friends also. Any fix?

idling rpm should be 1400 +/- 100rpm.. 2000rpm is too high

go for motul semisynthetic, very good oil. I was running on this previously.

check for fuel blockages, clean tank and petcock and carb (jets)
Change you air filter.(sometimes cleaning it doesn't help, from personal experience these paper type filters need to be replaced every 6-10k km depending on conditions)

                Hi Fayad,
Most of the Uni owners including me face this issue! Especially in rainy season.
It's certainly not 'cos of oil. When i got this problem, my filter was due for a replacement and i replaced it with the new viscous element paperfilter Vs ma old paper element filter. Bike start'd running smooth again and was like climbing hills one gear higher than i used to do before!! Again this problem has creeped up just after 500 odd kms (but not in a regular basis, but very much expectable in rainy days even after warm up as u quoted here) Mech this time said to clean the carb, which i hasn't done yet. As far as my understandings go, the new viscous element paper filter is more prone to suffocate in ours kinda climate. And the old one is better, just clean it on regular recommended intervals and dispose it later.

Hi But its only now i experience this missing, though I've heard others complaining about this. I thought I was lucky, but unfortunately the issue creeped in! Have to check with my mech about the carb cleaning.. I 'm using paper type filter only.

If you're referring to the throttle lag, then its common for all bikes running on a CV carb. And this becomes more prominent with load. This issue was solved on its own when I plonked in a free flow filter directly to carb, shortened the slide return spring, and raised the needle by an mm. Now I can crack open and close the throttle at will without the annoying CV lag.

                      • Hi everyone , it is my first comment or post on xbhp.
I use a 2010 Honda CB unicorn with 17000+ km on odo . My query is about the color of air filter as the service center guy and honda website have confused me a lot .
I went to Honda showroom to buy the air filter element after 16000 km as stated in user manual . The guy gave me the yellow colored filter which costs Rs.120 only. I replaced the old element with the new one .Old one was dirty and yellowish in color but not exactly green .Then started to used the bike and felt not a bit of difference after that.
Then when I told this to my friend who also owns a previous gen unicorn , he told me that mine being CB unicorn should have green colored and not the yellow one. Hence I wen to the showroom again and asked to guy . He said there is no much difference in both green and yellow other than price O_o ! Green one costs Rs.180 and he is not having it in stock and yes even this yellow also needs to be changed after 15000 km.
But then I checked the info about CB unicorn on Honda site and it shows the green colored air filter in bike .

So now I am having various queries dancing in my mind.
1- What exactly is the type of filter I am using the viscous one or the usual one ?
2- Is the viscous air filter is available in both yellow and green color ?
3- Does the green colored filter changes its color after its end lo life or say 15000 km ?
                        I am totally confused now.
Also can anyone post the link to the post containing basic rules regarding posting in the forum so I can bookmark it for future reference ?
                        Thanks in advance

You are using the right air filter. Looks like your stock bike came with the non-viscous paper filter (i.e. the dry yellow one)
The newer (i guess from around 2011 onwards) ones come with the green 'viscous' filter - which is supposed to be just replaced every 15k km and MUST NOT be cleaned with compressed air like the dry paper one.
The viscous air filter is GREEN in color and turns 'BlackishGreen' when dirty. And the Yellow one is the dry paper filter which looks like you have posted when dirty.
IMO stick to the yellow non-viscous one, clean it (tap it gently and blow with compressed air from the side facing the carb) every 2000km & replace it at around 10-12k km
I somehow cannot digest the recommendation of honda that says 'dont clean the viscous filter, only replace it at 15k km' - I am picking up a Unicorn soon and will switch over to the dry paper type after the first 5000km for sure or just replace the viscous one every 6k km - IMO 15k on a filter without cleaning is

                          • Honda cb unicorn 2012

Hey guys, im glenn . I am a new member of xbhp even though ive been visiting this site for around 3 years. This is my first review of any kind on the internet, hope you guys find this useful.

i had planned to buy a 150cc bike and the options that i was considering were the pulsar 150, hero hunk, suzuki gs150r, and the honda cb unicorn.

The pulsar had great styling and features like digital console going for it. But the fact that they have bad resale value and seem to get that heavily used
feeling pretty quickly went against it. And the fact that every kid in high school owned one was not helping its appeal.

Now we come to the hero hunk. personally i feel its looks are a lot better than that of the unicorn. what i hated about this bike was that wierd looking extended rear end, and the fact that it had body coloured mirrors that made it look like a scooter. My friend owned one and the one major fault he had with it was stability at high speeds. he felt that the extended rear end was to blame for this. the rear mud gaurd caught a lot of wind in between the wheel. the road rash and the broken arm he had are testament.. although personally i believe he wad just a shit rider

Next we have the GS150r from suzuki. i wasnt too sure about this bike from the very beginning as it looked like a hastily put together bike. the styling looked very much like that of a pulsar from some angles. The positives of this bike is that it is loaded with features. the 6 speed gearbox and gear shift indicator was a clever move. the digital console is one of the best ive seen on the indian market. the mileage of around 55 was also looking good. The fact that suzuki was offering all of this for around 73,000 on road was even more wonderful. but i thought maybe they had compromised on other areas of the bike to offer it at such a great price. the bike was relativiley new to the indian market and the opinion about it was still out there. so it was still a bit of a gamble to buy it. The fact that suzuki has one of the worst service networks in india was also detrimental. there are very few dealerships and the service is also very poor. The employees at the showroom seemed to have a dont care attitude. i took a test drive and found the engine sounded wierd while idling. now when i come to think of it , i have to say it actually sounded like that of an old mahindra...ok im exagerating a bit... well you get the idea. so this bike was again a no-go.

NOW we come on to the unicorn. It looks .....hmmmm lets say responsible and mature. agreed that it lacks behind the other three in the looks and features. in fact the only notable feature about it is the monoshock. but still the unicorn has such a high demand on the indian market. so i thought surely honda must have done something right. so i went ahead a got one. i have owned it for 3 months now and i am mighty pleased with it.

                            PROS:

1)The smoothness of the engine is out of this world!!!.. it is so smooth that guys riding pillion have literally asked me if the bike had shut down since there was hardly any vibrations and noise coming from the engine.

2)THE unicorn is giving me a mileage of around 45-50 in the city and above 55 on the highway. so pretty good in the mileage department.

3)Another positive point about the unicorn is the handling. it has great balance and maneuvreability which i think is due to the monoshock. I feel like
valentino rossi when i weave through traffic

4)great resale value and people generally have a very good opinion about the bike. also a lot of service centres around.

                            CONS:

1)Outdated styling. This has to be the one major fault of this bike. honestly the bike could easily be mistaken with the honda shine. i dont know why
honda thought it was a good idea to let both bikes have a similar style. and since it is competing in the 150 cc segment where all the other bikes
are so cool looking.. just look at the apache. the unicorn looks like something your dad would ride.

2)analog console. the good thing about it is the tachometer and the speedometer at the center is good. i hate those that have the speedometer to one
side. but the lack of a digital console is highly felt. even the 125 cc bikes have them these days. the guys at honda probably did this to cut cost as a
digital console would add about 3k to the total cost of the bike.

3)cheap plastics and switches. my indicator switch stopped working after 2 months. it seems to have a mind of its own. also the markings on the
switches have faded away. the plastic on the handlebar and console look old and faded.

4)at a 149 kgs the bike is a bit heavy. getting the bike on the centre stand is a pain because the foot peg on the centre stand is rather short and more often than not, you will end up scraping your shin on the sidestand, which is quite painful.

                            5) lack of a rear LED tail lamp.

                            6) spare parts seem to be on the pricier side when compared to the other three manufacturers.

so all in all a great bike if you place performance and practicality over looks and modern features. the waiting period of around 4 to 5 months is a bit long but it is a sign that the honda cb unicorn is in high demand. even with the lack of modern features, people are willing to go for the unicorn because of its reliabilty. This is the only reason honda has not given this bike any significant upgrades. they seem to be following the age old mantra

" IF ITS NOT BROKEN, DONT FIX IT"

hope this article was of some use....

                            cheers guys,

1)Outdated styling. - IMO a unicorn looks much better with a shorter handle bar - the regular bar from certain angles makes the bike look 'uncle-ish'

2)analog console. - my personal opinion is 'i prefer analog' (its just a 150cc carb bike.. no fancy altitude etc readings right? like a plane ) - i love seeing the needle move(speed/tacho) rather than a few bars flashing or some numbers changing on a digi console. Call me old skool?!

3)cheap plastics and switches. my indicator switch stopped working after 2 months. it seems to have a mind of its own. also the markings on the
switches have faded away. the plastic on the handlebar and console look old and faded. - Are they that bad ? Never had a single problem on the switch gear on my '07 Dio though

4)at a 149 kgs the bike is a bit heavy. getting the bike on the centre stand is a pain because the foot peg on the centre stand is rather short and more often than not, you will end up scraping your shin on the sidestand, which is quite painful. - can you get a extension welded on the stand ? juggad is necessary at times for convenience

                                5) lack of a rear LED tail lamp. - if you plan to mod the electricals n save a few watts you can go for LED's

                                6) spare parts seem to be on the pricier side when compared to the other three manufacturers. - are they pricier than HH 150cc bike parts? (but definitely more than Bajaj), i think its worth their quality and most regular spares (cables/brake shoes/plugs/bulbs) are not 'expensive' but 'normally' priced.

so all in all a great bike if you place performance and practicality over looks and modern features. the waiting period of around 4 to 5 months is a bit long but it is a sign that the honda cb unicorn is in high demand. even with the lack of modern features, people are willing to go for the unicorn because of its reliabilty. This is the only reason honda has not given this bike any significant upgrades. they seem to be following the age old mantra - The waiting period is 30minutes if you pay in cash, I am picking up a unicorn in Jan

" IF ITS NOT BROKEN, DONT FIX IT" - precisely and IMO the unicorn is the most refined, reliable, efficient amongst the 150cc lot under 85krs
