Hey guys today i went to Sinhagad fort in Pune and it was a pain to climb uphill. My bike is new (450kms on odo and 1st servicing done) and i coudnt even ride in 2nd gear with pillion. The road is very steep and winding as the fort is on a mountain but my bike coudnt climb that while my friends were on Tvs star city and FZ and they had no problem. Finally I asked the pillion to go on another bike and then somehow made it to the top(1st/2nd gear change). Even as I was riding i could feel no power in the engine.

First thing first, its not good to rev your engine hard during the run-in period. As much as possible, try to be within the 4k rpm. Check out the engine tuning and also the tightness of the chain. Don't know about other bikes, but at least, my uni, comes to life from 3rd gear onwards & am fine with that as am not someone who revs hard in lower gears, instead i prefer hitting the speeds gradually. I've felt some resistance in the first 2 gears, once i get decent speed to move onto 3rd gear, its pretty smooth... During my rides, i've even climbed the ghats (Ooty, Talacauvery near Coorg and many others) in 4th / 5th gears without any issues (provided i have the momentum)Originally posted by ajtheghost View PostHey guys today i went to Sinhagad fort in Pune and it was a pain to climb uphill. (at the worst case) Loss of compression, it seems. Rev your bike on standstill and check for white smoke from the silencer.Originally posted by ajtheghost View PostHey guys today i went to Sinhagad fort in Pune and it was a pain to climb uphill. I do not rev hard. Never went past 4k, max speed I touched is 60.Originally posted by praneshvittal View PostFirst thing first, its not good to rev your engine hard during the run-in period. No white smoke i checkedOriginally posted by mid View Post(at the worst case) Loss of compression, it seems. Rev your bike on standstill and check for white smoke from the silencer.
I drove my friends cbz extreme today which has the same engine as the unicorn and it feels like totally different bike with power and pickup. Is there any tuning possible for the engine? Current odo reading is 560kms, the manual says run in period is 500kms so is it safe if i take for a ride on the highway?

Then the prob. might be with the fueling front. Check with ASC and make them address to your issues.Originally posted by ajtheghost View PostI drove my friends cbz extreme today which has the same engine as the unicorn and it feels like totally different bike with power and pickup. Oil filter in Unicorn
Hi Guys,
Does Unicorn have an oil filter ? Do we need to change it every time we change the engine oil ?
The reason I am asking this is when we went to yamaha factory shop pune for servicing my friends yamaha fz, they told that " we need to change oil filter every time we change engine oil..other wise there is no benefit of oil change."
I don't remember oil filter change is done at honda service center.. Any views regarding this please ! :-)
Thanks,
Doney

Unicorn doesn't has any oil filter that needs replacement but it uses a centrifugal oil stainer which filters out all the impurities in oil ,and Honda not mentioned about any replacement of this part ,its only needs inspection and cleaning at every service (Refer your Uni's User Manual -maintenance schedule section) .Originally posted by doneybhai View PostHi Guys,

I was using Honda engine oil for the past 3 years/30k km
Now I am about to switch it to gulf pride 4t plus 20w40.. This was the back ground of my query. :-)

Honda no longer uses 20-40W grade oil for their bikes..Now they switched over to 10-30W grade mineral oil for Unicorn....My suggestion is use Shell Advance AX-7(10-40) for your bike, its a semi-synthetic oil... I am using this oil for the past 8 months..oil change interval is around 4k.. Try it...Originally posted by doneybhai View PostThanks Sree..

Gulf do have a 10W30 grade oil written 'synthetic' on it. Gulf 20W40 is the finest 'mineral' oil you could get for Uni.Originally posted by sree_unicorn View PostHonda no longer uses 20-40W grade oil for their bikes..Now they switched over to 10-30W grade mineral oil for Unicorn....My suggestion is use Shell Advance AX-7(10-40) for your bike, its a semi-synthetic oil... Yes Sree, recently I came to know that Honda switched to 10w30 semi synthetic..My roommate is using Shell Advance AX-7 for his stunner..But in the mean time I heard good reviews regarding Gulf pride 20w40 4t plus..and I bought it after searching a lot of shops here in Pune..so will just try gulf once :-) Next time I will try Shell AX7 also ;-)Originally posted by sree_unicorn View PostHonda no longer uses 20-40W grade oil for their bikes..Now they switched over to 10-30W grade mineral oil for Unicorn....My suggestion is use Shell Advance AX-7(10-40) for your bike, its a semi-synthetic oil... In the bottle it is written..it performs well upto 10k kms... not sure, but I think 3000 km will be fine before changing it :-)Originally posted by mid View PostGulf do have a 10W30 grade oil written 'synthetic' on it. Gulf 20W40 is the finest 'mineral' oil you could get for Uni.

Its not about the speed, its abt the RPM that you should be more careful about... Even if you rev hard in neutral, its not good for the engine during the run-in period.Originally posted by ajtheghost View PostI do not rev hard. Never went past 4k, max speed I touched is 60.
Yes CBZ's tuning is different compared to that of Unicorn.... Read somewhere and also heard from many folks that Uni's engine is tuned to just 70% of its actual performance, whereas for CBZ's is somewhat higher... For those who are power hungry, they can tune it further (At the cost of more wear & tear and drop in fuel economy)... I extended my run-in period to 2500 kms wherein I didn't rev hard for first 2 services and the result is properly seen on my bike these daysOriginally posted by ajtheghost View PostI drove my friends cbz extreme today which has the same engine as the unicorn and it feels like totally different bike with power and pickup. Unicorn Mileage
Folks,
A friend is likely to upgrade from a Honda Shine to a Unicorn. He currently gets about 55 kmpl from his Shine and does about 1500 km per month.
He is however worried about the mileage - could you please chip in with what he could expect from real-world city riding on a Unicorn?
