  • about the vibration

    Hi people....!!!
    question to all uni owners...
vibration is nil below 3k and I find little vibration (dont know how to describe the extent) above 3k and bit more above 4k....
how do I know whether these vibrations are within limits....?
I have a 2005 zen which has clocked more than 40000km and running smooth as new.
Is uni's smoothness comparable to zen smoothness or...?

LOL! Comparing a car with a bike? Every car is much more smoother compared to any single cylinder bikes in India!!!
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

Changed the oil at 350 KM ODO(honda engine oil from showroom). Engine was damn smooth for the next 100km (<4k rpm). after 450km (odo ) vibration increased a bit (very sensitively) in the 3k - 4k rpm range. today while taking the engine above 5k found a vibrating noise coming from leg gaurd. arrested it with legs and confirmed the culprit. How do I arrest this? and I m sure this is not the reason for vibration.

Point noted. Changed the bunk and screening now. thats the reason why I keep checking my mileage and never fill fuel more than what is expected for the next 48 hours.

        wow!!!
        nice to know that.
will try it for sure after warranty....
btw does it void warranty if I use MOTUL now...?

My point was to use it as a benchmark.
How cud a bike costing 65k and weighing 140kg (approx) and a single cylinder be smoother...u shud LOL!!! for that....
Does everybody feel the difference in vibration after 3k rpm and a bit more after 4k rpm? and is that wat I too get or do I get more. How do I measure it?
I noticed that after 4k till 8k rpm there was no difference in the level of vibrations happy with that.

Gosh... don't be so much of a slave to the warranty dude! Just take the bottle with you and get it filled at the service centre and see that they make a note of it in their system and the bill... even if they mention that oil is brought by customer it shuld be ok. If they refuse to use your oil, make a hue and cry and whatever else. Also preserve the bills of the oil cans you buy, just in case.

Also, I dont think it is mentioned in the terms and conditions that you have to use oil given by the service centres only. Just make sure you use the right grade... or at least something closest to it.

The leg guard, about an year ago i had installed a single rod leg guard and i used to feel the vibration after 5k.I, then switched back to stock.
Honda unicorn's manual suggests to use a particular grade of oil as per operational conditions. It only recommends to use the idemitsu oil.For eg-if you are living in rajasthan, then you can use Xw50 grade because of the hot ambient temperature.Whereas the same grade won't be suitable if you are in mumbai or Pune(I have tried it,hence)

The above pic is the viscosity chart of the unicorn.I was planning to go for the 5w40 300v,but the grade hasn't been shown on the chart. My question is,is it safe to try out 5w40 even if it hasn't been shown on the chart?

Since Motul does not import that grade, it might be ok to use 5W40. Suggest you write to Motul to consider importing 10W40 (yes, Motul has that grade abroad) as that would be the most suitable grade.

                      hmm would give that a shot,So i shouldn't use 5w 40 right?

The leg guard is showroom fitted.
I live in chennai and 20w40 fits here I believe. I think its the run-in time and I should check the vibration (though negligible) issues after first 3 services. However the bike feels smoother than pulsar (can that be used as a benchmark?).

Changed the bunk and tried to cruise within 4k rpm and mileage is amazingly 55+ and has not turned to reserve yet. Will update it after reserve.

You don't have a choice, if you want to use Motul fully synth. 5W40 is closest to the recommended grade. As I said consider writing to Motul, asking them to import 10W40 grade... and hope that its available in future.

                            • hey
some ppl at team-bhp says that 20w50 is actual grade for uni
according to them honda is selling 20w40 due to its low manufacturing costs and hence to ensure customers of it as an inexpensive maintenance bike.
                              is that so ?
Also the oil bible says that the oil must be as free flowing as possible at 0 temp. and as thick as possible at 100 deg celcius!!!!!!!!!
The Automotive batteries are designed to work best in a typical short start-stop fashion.
So to increase the life of your automobile battery, blow the horn and flash the pass light in a quick start stop fashion instead of a conitnuous long horn blow or flash light continuous on!!
And obviously don't stretch the self start far too long.
