will jetting the carb/cleaning the sparkplug.. do the job??

the mech says its all not the thing.. must open the engine (the one like box of aluminum coils above engine.. below the fuel tap)
check it.. then he'll say if any problem is there.. he also said that budget is abt. 1500 bucks.. my dad will kill me.... help!!!
or shall i take it to HASC?? i feel they charge more than the regular mech and dont do a great job..

Decide what you want to do with your bike. Is that you want to resolve the issue or concerned about the expense?

H.A.S.S - Expensive, however, it is better off when compared to local mechanic as they are trained and expected to diagnose and resolve the issue without second thought.

Local Mechanic - Comparatively less expensive, you'll be attracted to talk, less expensive and some immediate attention. What you get in return? Robbed of parts from vehicle, experiments and learn at your expense and divert the whole attention from his ignorance and focuses you on the bottom line - 'The bike is ready'.

        found a sad solution..
the H.A.S.S 'FORGOT' yeah.. forgot to put engine oil in my engine.. today i put MAK 20w40 at a BPC fuel station.. she is smooth now.. i swear by god!!! i will never ever go to that haunted house (H.A.S.S) for giving my babe's service.. lost trust in 'em.. say better remove A from H.A.S.S. they are not A to do my bike..

im still shocked that i rode my babe hard for 2 whole months without engine oil.. she was rough .. and makin all sorts of noise.. today dad checked the engine oil.. and told me to put it on before i do any more damage to it..

That's bad! I would not blanket H.A.S.S for all the mistakes. I would think, you should have gone back to them for second look since you suspect something is wrong.

Ground rule is that, when you see the bill where it had stated for Oil change, should have physically checked by opening the oil cap.

Ajay - After joining this forum and spent considerable time (assuming), one should have got an idea about servicing and curiosity to investigate if found anything unusual. Again, it is my personal opinion.

I have stopped visiting service centers for my RX135/Unicorn for a long time. Had approached mechanic only after doing my initial observation and findings IF that needs knowledge beyond my understanding.

Now, good thing about this forum is that, you can confidently take tools and start exploring your bike and learn the mechanics. I understand most likely we end dragged to our comfort zone by just taking to a shed. The gain is for the mech and you end up being at receiving end.

            • Well, if any honda motorcycle owner is staying in Noida, I would like to show him the service quality that we're being subjected to..
one day, all of a sudden my bike's battery stopped working. I'm a student, my home is at greater noida but am studying at allahabad presently. So my bike isn't used quite as much as it should be. My father takes it for rides only on the weekends..So, there were very little chances of the battery going down so early.

I had always observed the acid coming out of the battery after every service and ruining the marble floor beneath it . And because of this reason, I always told the Prakash Honda guys to keep a check on the refilling of fluid. But, it never helped!

So after the battery was out, i tried to resolved the issue on my own and see this is what i found. Please DO have a look-

as u can see, the battery's terminal is completely covered with the acid deposit. The only reason being the excessive water that they are pouring in without keeping in mind the upper limit of the fluid. What i feel is that they don't open the battery and clear the terminals at all. The picture shows that this procedure has never been followed. The just pour in water without unbolting the battery.
You can also see that the bolt has been completely eaten up by the acid.I was shocked to see that only the bolt head had survived and the threads had been completely eaten up by the acid!

So what could have I done, I removed the battery, cleaned the terminals connected it in parallel with my inverter's battery and charged it for one complete day. It was working fine again. But still I wanted to show this to all of you. Don't know what can be done!

Plus my bike is also giving mileage problem these days, it has dropped to 35-40 all of a sudden from 53! And the service station hasn't been able to figure out the solution even in 2 visits!

              • you can do one thing.. change the battery and the whole set.. or get it done at a battery shop.. what i mean by getting it done is getting the acid cleaned.. charged.. and fitted with new nut/screw.. then grease it with wax.. not grease exactly.. the battery shop will have it.. top-up the distilled water in it.. then you are good to go.. ^_^ hope this helps..

                • thanks!
but as i said, I've done all of this already and its working fine!
there's only this mileage problem which is becoming a problem these days.

What is the oil currently being used?

Personally have not used it. However, why choosing 15w50? What company recommends is x40. So keep it that way.

I guess you have the x40 in Valvoline too.
xW40 semisynthetic was not available in valvoline brand here thats why i asked about xW50.
Anyways i filled shell semi-synthetic oil of grade 10w40.. Initially i had a feeling that shifting from 2nd to 1st gear was rough, but its ok now...no other probs..cost rs300/L.

sorry for the late reply..couldnt come online....

                          • Hi Frenz

I have a first generation Unicorn. I was about the go for Pulsar but I test drove it once and its smoothness wiped out the thoughts of any other bikes.
It has ran over 42300 Kms till date with various trips between Mumbai and Pune. No big problems till date . It even saw the 26th July, 2005 deluge. It tried to help me out that day...but gave up after some time and I pushed it from Seepz, Andheri to Kandivali.
I have read this thread and I see some fans of tuff up tube. My experience hasnot been so good with it. It got punctured within first 3 months and I had to replace it with some good quality but non-tuffup tube.
Now a days I am facing issues of frequent punctures(Thanks to all the construction activities in Pune). Till date it is running on stock tyres.I am planning to change them to tubeless with alloys.
Also, my uni had got a beauty spot(dent) within first week. I had gone to a movie. When I came out there was this dent and some scratches..it was so much of heartburn. ..Recently I spotted another dent, I guess someone's handywork. I am planning to go for a repaint of tank. (Do you suggest replacing it ?)...
I am thinking to use the services of a castrol bike zone near my society in Pimple Saudagar for these changes.
Pune guys, do you have any better options for mechanics. Please let me know...

                            • hi Pravs27, I own a Gen1 Unicorn too.

With regards to your query about changing the tank, the size of the tank that is available now is smaller than the Gen1 tank. you might want to get an idea of the expenses for the Alloys. I for one am a happy person with the spokes too The Tuff up does a good job better than an average tube.

                                Hi RockRider
Thanks for the info about tank. This means the only option for me now is to go for a paint job. I agree with the tuff up tube. I still have it in my wife's Activa and no puncture till date...
The only reason I want to go for tubeless is to avoid punctures. Someone in the thread had mentioned that alloys are for 5-6k. I may also need to change the disc which is for 2.5k...Overall it should be done in 10-12k max. I will update once I am done with the changes.
