  • Re: Honda CBR 250R

Did a trip to kodaikannal from chennai recently , could not take pics as my phone konked off but a friend took a pic of my setup, rode between 90-130 most the time, bike was comfortable at that range, and smoothened the engine out , faced no issues at all ,covered 1200kms overall, rode with a 2015 d390 , kept up pretty decently but for some reason bike doesn't go past 145kmph,maybe it's my bike or my weight but never really revved it too hard , did do 160kmph on a speed run like a year and a half ago, bike probably had 18000kms on odo, I know there's a ecu restriction in the 6th gear where you can't redline but it's fine up to 8500 rpm in 6th but refuses to go any higher most the time, bike is at 34000km atm

    Gear
    1)cramster TRG 2 gloves
    2)DSG Phoenix waterproof jacket
    3)HJC CL-ST helmet
    4)viaterra claw saddlebag
    5) viaterra magnetic tank bag

My bike is leaking coolant [emoji24] Went to the service centre and they ordered replacement parts that are scheduled to arrive in 15 days. Any idea how can i temporarily reduce this leakage? Will M-seal work at high temperatures?
There is no destination, I just want to keep riding.

Same thing happened to my bike as well a few months ago. Don't worry its a minor leakage. The o-ring under the thermostat cover has given up. If u want you can check the coolant level in the radiator and top it up if it is low until you get it fixed. Till then you can ride the bike but just keep an eye on the coolant level and temperature bar on the speedo console.

M seal won't hold up for much days. I applied a similar sealant and it has given up and my bike still leaks coolant from there but it is very minor. I check the coolant level every month by opening the radiator cap and top it up if required.

I would like to know what spares did you order.

          • CBR 250R MILEAGE and TOPSPEED

            Hi,

I bought a new CBR 250 ABS four months back.

Based on YouTube videos and existing ownership reviews and I see mileage is above 30kmpl and top speed more than 150

But I get around 25 kmpl and my top speed is 137 kmph

            Can you guys confirm ?

Wait for the O ring or thermostat cover to be arrived.

If you want a DIY, here it is.... There is an O ring seats into thermostat cover groove. Get Threebond silicone based gasket maker which comes with a nozzle. Open the thermostat cover and apply it using nozzle all over the O ring - a thin layer. Wait for good 20 minutes to let it dry and assemble it back. Top up the coolant and you are ready to go!

Before going ahead, just check the bolts which hold cover are tightened at specified torque on not. Tight if loose and check whether it stops leakage.

I am keeping an eye on coolant level. I have no idea about parts they have ordered. They quoted Rs.1200 for parts plus labor. I am assuming they are replacing thermostat along with the o-ring

Thanks for your help. I think i should wait for replacement parts to arrive considering i dont have the necessary tools and experience to do any jugad repair myself.

If the temperature console does not show more than three bars(provided the coolant level is maintained in the radiator) there is no need to replace the thermostat. 1200 seems to much. I guess thermostat costs around 850-900 rs. Do check with the svc, they might be fooling you.

Arvind and others have pinned spot on, on the leak issue. It indeed is the O-ring under the thermostat. What you can do temporarily is use silicone sealant makers, now you get two types of gasket makers, one in red color and clear type ones. Get the clear type gasket maker, with a sharp nozzle applicator and apply it around the circumference of the O ring, and allow it to dry for a few mins and tighten the bolts to the right spec.

Do note this is only a temporary measure, water can easily squeeze pass and start leaking again, when the sealant is shoddily applied and the bolts not torqued to the right spec. Also whenever you see hot coolant spewed on the engine casing, wipe it immediately. Coolant is corrosive, especially hot coolant as they have a very high tendency to interfere with paint finish. You don't want permanent coolant stain marks on your engine casing and or other parts.

Ride the bike as you normally would after temporarily using a gasket maker, if you still observe leaks post this temporary setup, it's advisable to not ride the bike and get the O ring changed on an ASAP basis.

                      Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
                      The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

                      THE END

That O ring doesn't come alone. You need to buy that complete cover which costs around INR 80 and is sold separately. I don't think you need a thermostat. Thermostat costs INR 800. IMO, the only replacement parts you need are that thermostat cover and some ounces of coolant.

I will check this with other service centers. will see if i can source only O ring and the casing.

I need a permanent fix because i bought CBR250 over Duke 390 just for its reliability and i can't compromise on it. I think i will wait for replacement parts. Meanwhile i will check with other service centers in the town to see if they have the required parts in stock. Right now i am keeping it under 5000rpm all the time. Haven't seen coolant leakage since last 2 days.
Thanks for telling about corrosive nature of coolant. I'll wipe it as soon as possible.

                              reliability of CBR250 = reliability of DUKE390.

Just because of an O-ring which is not available at ASC??
