Thanks ron. Are there some important points I should be aware of till I get the manual maybe tomorrow or day after??? Is the bike factory teflon coated?

Ron : Which petrol do I have to use? Is normal petrol with 87 octane rating enough for r15? or should I go for speed - 91?

Can we use additives to increase the octane value of normal petrol?
Mate, I believe you are in Mumbai. All BS3 cities/states still have 87 Octane fuel and those are very few and poor states, unfortunately.
Mumbai has imposed BS4 regualtions on itself long time ago, so you will/should get 91 Octane fuel from almost the fuel stations in Mumbai.
Adding additives is not a very wise choice. There are possibilities of those additives getting stuck in the fuel pump or not suiting the engine. Normal fuel will do fine.

As for Shell, I will recommend you everytime, even in sleep. I have Pulsar 150 which is known for its not so smooth engine and gearbox. Not sure about gearbox, but I did notice that the engine becomes smooth, less knocking and runs relatively cooler as compared to BP/HP/IO. I used two full tanks and more than 1100 kms on Shell Super Unleaded. Per my calculations I got a fuel economy bump too, not that high but in the range 3-5 KMPL under same riding conditions.

        • Does the engine sound punchy (like a thud) during this initial run in stage? I felt it like that, even the thud was getting transferred to my handlebar (like a heart beat). But boy, this baby has got power in the hoods.

I was doing 50 on 3k rpm on 4th, kept changing gears and varying speeds after regular intervals. I hope I am doing it in the right way.

          1. @Eshan-p180 : Thanks a lot for the checklist. Followed it, but found every point good. It also helped another person who was taking delivery of his FZ to get his footpeg replaced

          2. I couldnt check the coolant level, I did ask the showroom guy, but he said its found perfect in their PDI. How do I check it?

          3. My bikes ODO showed 44kms initially, is it fine? I know the bike is been delivered by riding it for 23kms, but what about the rest 21kms? Is it factory testing?

44 is way too much, I was particular about the ODO reading while booking itself, do my dealer warned me about their policy to drive the vehicle from their godown since they did not have a delivery truck yet. I offered to go there and take the vehicle myself.
Good idea to gather facts right now, if you get a chance just ask your dealer if this is what happened in your case if not, have him properly justify that odo reading.

            • Godown is 23kms away from the showroom, so they told me they would ride it till here. So I told them that instead of 44kms it should have been 23kms.

It is normal to see the ones from the manufacturing unit with about 10-12 km on them. The delivery guy probably does not get to drive an R15 everyday, so the jackass in all likelyhood didn't take the straight 23km route. They do know whats coming to them should they damage the vehicles the slightest, so they are mostly careful, so you should be good to go. Gratz on the beast, drive safe!

                    Welcome!
Engine and gear shifts are pretty rough at the early stages. Make sure to change to change the engine oil and the oil filter at about 180-200 km. This is when most of the metal wears off into the oil. Mineral oil is recommended till about 2000 km, then semi synthetic to about 5000 and fully synthetic thereafter. The engine refinement will become gradually apprent after about 1000km.

Wasn't my intention to misguide. Too much metal fragments get accumulated at that point within the engine, its highly recommended to get the first servicing done at about 200. Second at about 500 and third at about 1000. But to each, his own I suppose.

I understand that you are concerned about the engine but I guess the engineers who designed this bike know a bit more than us. That is why I'm suggesting the prescribed technique. BTW can you upload the data that you are backing? Can you please show me where in the manual or on the Yamaha R15 brochure, website, and blog its written that oil and oil filter needs to be changed at mentioned schedule by you. Adhere to the Manual, it knows everything that is present in the bike, also its operation to troubleshooting.

To each, his own I suppose turned out to be a costly affair for me in my previous bike (Pulsar180). I dont want others to go through the same, thats why buddy, nothing personal. Tk it easy.

EDIT - The Service schedule prescribed is----

                          1st

In addition, he has asked me not to ride the bike over 100kms before registration.

Dude, when ever you were handed over the bike, the manual should have been given to you.
From which showroom you have taken the bike? they are just talking crap.
Either they don't have the manual(seems strange but heard from many people of not getting the manual while taking the bike) or only GOD knows.
And what if your warranty starts from today...when you are riding from now the warranty should start now...what if something happens to the bike before your warranty starts(within THAT 100 kms), they are gonna charge fully that to you.
So I would suggest start the warranty from the very first day you start riding your bike and before that please read the manual carefully.
