i see. hope it's something simple like that. going to svc in a few hours. if it's indeed a matter of cleaning and refitting the brake pads, it shouldn't have happened on a 1-2 days old bike, no ? it was working all fine for the first 50kms of its life, and then out of nowhere this happens. it's actually worrying me a lot. what did i do wrong or what did the showroom mechanic ignore during pre-delivery checks or is this just the machine's mechanical fault developed on its own somehow on account of faulty brakes to begin with or something..this shouldn't have happened on a new bike.

my 2 day old/72kms old R15 had a front brake problem today. somewhere during my ride, it started making a very uncomfortable sounding scratchy sound even when applied moderately and then after a few times even at slight application of the brake. the kind of sound that for instace one hears when forcibly rubbing a very clean and tightly gripped rubber on say a steel/metal surface or something. till about 50-55 kms this didnt happen (infact yesterday, the first day of my bike and distance wise the first 41kms of its life, i had to brake the front somewhat hard one time, albeit from a speed of only about 25-30kmph and even immediately after that no scratchy sound came). i ain't no expert at all, infact a total newbie, but i checked for any fluid leakage or whatever other abnormal thing possibly visible to the naked eye but couldn't see anything dodgy and suspicious. the sound sounds like something is forcibly and harshly rubbing against the discs.

i checked if some such sound was also coming from the rear, under slight to moderate braking as well as under pretty hard braking (from slow speed) and the rear brake gave no such sound but then towards the end of my ride today, just when i was almost reaching my apartment the rear also made a little of that sound under just a moderate braking.

another observation was that, only once or i think twice, after not using the front brake at all for several minutes (say about 4-5 mins), the sound went away at least under slight and moderate braking. but then, at other periods of not using the front brake at all for 4-5 mins, it continued to produce that sound.

certainly going to SVC tomorrow evening and hoping it's easily curable and no major problem and not something that can happen ever again, but till then, can any of you guys enlighten me why this is happening. i am worried why this happened in just the second day of riding the bike.
Is the sound more like squealing and pulsating ?? . It might be due to dust which comes between pads and disc . Go to local wash center and using pressurized water spray on disc and pad area . If it still makes noise , go to service center and ask them to emery the brake pads . This should hopefully solve the issue .

hello guys, about the front brake problem about which i wrote a worried post in the previous page of the thread - went to the showroom today and it turned out one of the bolts on the front brake system had somehow come out. that black coloured system beside the disc was therefore lose in one direction of motion. i hadn't touched or tried moving anything yesterday to see if something was lose after i'd noticed the sound, that's why i didnt see this while i was inspecting for any fluid leakage or wire cut or something. i didnt know there's supposed to be a bolt there. else may have noticed a missing nutbolt.

i forgot to mention this in my post before but i was also getting a shik-shik kinda sound (without the brakes) at low speeds, both on a straight path as well while turning. this was also due that thing being lose.

now how this happened i dont know. i asked the showroom mechanic and he said he must have forgotten to check if it was lose or something during PDI (even though that day i kept on insisting to properly check everything is right and tight). the sales manager told me it could have led to an accident and it was quite a luck it didn't. holy shit. in the dense city traffic of allahabad i somehow managed to reach the showroom today which is about 13-14kms from my place without using the front brake (except once or twice to see if the sound was still there and once to brake hard as some guy suddenly decided to cross the busy road with so many incoming vehicles and he happened to place himself right in my path just 1m from me. luckily i was just at 20kmph at that time) against the tendency to do so.

from now on every few days i am gonna check all these visible nuts and bolts and everything that's supposed to be tight is tight. brakes and in particular front brakes are one of the most most important things on a bike like this (actually in most bikes except cruisers and the like where the rear of the bike has more weight on it and so rear brakes are the ones to use much more than the front).

anyway, it's all fine now and after that i rode about 135 kms today going through the nice countryside in my riding gear (HJC helmet and alpinestars jacket and gloves as yet. soon to get riding pants and shoes as well) and so many people turning their eyes at me including 2-3 R15 riders (one of them also in the 2013 racing blue special edition) with no riding gear (as is the norm in india unfortunately) but being inside a helmet i didnt feel so uncomfortable with all the attention. can't say enough about the handling of the bike. it's like gliding over the road. and also, it was a good thing the roads i took turned out to have some excellent corners (this was btw the allahabad-gorakhpur state highway. just a 2-lane road but in really good condition. nothing broken, no potholes, nothing. just a few small undulations once in a while that won't even bother a bike with a good suspension). i know now that roadway is going to be one of my favorites and most frequented ones.

Imagine this situation:
Riding at a healthy 100kmph you are fast approaching a red-light, so you apply the front brake to stop the bike.
Suddenly you realize that the bike isn't slowing down at all - the front brake must have failed!
At this point there are only two things you can do to slow down the bike (assuming you haven't already frozen from panic): use the rear brake or use engine braking by hard downshifting (it might screw your gearbox but obviously that's not the priority here). Neither of which is going to be effective at high speeds.

Man! just the thought of it gives me the shivers!

Luckily, critical components on a bike don't just fail catastrophically (at least they are not supposed to!).
You do get a warning. You did the right thing by having it checked at the SVC ASAP.

BTW, it really helps to have a basic understanding about bike mechanics.
You can start by reading the R15 service manual. Its not that hard.

yes i have been steadily learning more (than whatever basic stuff i previously knew) about bike mechanics ever since i'd finally booked the R15 in early june

and also, i'd read the manual fully on the first day (the front brake issue happened on the second day) itself after coming back to my place with the bike from showroom. then i re-read the front brake topics in it yesterday (the second day of my bike) after i came back from the ride with a concerned and bitter mind about the reason why that was happening.

and you described a horrifying situation that has plagued my thoughts so many times for years as one of the various theoretical but actually plausible possibilities of an enormous screw up while riding anything at high speed. let's hope shit like that never happens with anyone. even though we all know every once in a while it certainly will happen with someone. thanks, now that the thought is again refreshed, i'll now be visualizing and having nightmares

Manual gives us many crucial information regarding parts and their purpose . If one ignores the manual , bike will sooner or later end up more in mechanic`s garage than ours . Brakes are the first thing i usually service in my bike , reason is simple going fast needs to be stopped fast too. I learnt this from a mistake which my close frnd did , he postponed disk pad change which resulted in broken leg and bruises , thank god nothing serious happened . So i urge you check every vital part of bike before you set off to work/college , and in case of smallest problem which bugs you go to svc and get it rectified . If in any doubt feel free to ask here , members here will try best to help you

Hello guys. Anyone from Kolkata here?

1. Is there a shop near Salt Lake or Beleghata, selling chain cleaners and chain lubes? It is not available from the Factory Shop and Wellington is too far from my house.
I had asked the ASC guys about using Bajaj's cleaner and lube, and they said that it would harm the chain and the sprockets. Is it really not advisable to use Bajaj's cleaner and lubricant??

2. Where in Kolkata can i get a teflon and anti-rust coating done for my bike?

I have one more query. When the bike is stationary and is in neutral, is it normal to get vibrations near the tank and handlebars, if it is revved up to 5k RPM? I get very little vibrations around 4.5k-5k RPM when the bike is moving. I have covered only around 610 kms so far and completed the 2nd servicing, a few days back..

Regards.

Well , guys , i again met with an accident ! this time , it has left me with bruises on my palm, elbow, knee and stomach and bad bruises on my baby too .. 14k worth damages had been to an outing ! 4 bikes and 4 riders ! Was near Belur and was cornering hard. An omni in front of me braked hard and left me nowhere to go,but towards the divider reason was a typical villager coming on the wrong side and crossing at an intersection omni tried to avoid that villager and i tried to avoid omni and hit the divider ! omni guy sped away from the scene. my friends were totally shocked to see me fall and forgot to note the number of that omni. it was disastrousd damages at the scene- coolant got leaked. brake lever and RH handle got bent. somehow rode it till chikmanglur and topped up the coolant. finished my trip and came back to mysore and getting it repaired now well, the irony thing is,just before that accident,my friend borrowed my gloves, armguards and kneeguards talk about that and xDa_nightfury - will update soon mate sorry for the delay

sorry to hear that ashwin. never do cornering and the like without protectors on your body man. well at least you had helmet on (i assume).

RohIIT - yeah man, i know . as i said, i will be checking my bike components myself with the toolkit given to us by yamaha every 3-4 days. particularly before and after any long ride. inaugurated the toolkit today and ensured whatever nuts and bolts i could see were tight as hell.

had a silly question to you people - is it okay to use that Colin cleaner spray to clean the R15's body ? i tested it on a few spots of mud and water and insect marks on the bike's body (fairing, etc) today in small amounts and it seemed alright. but this was just one test. i want to know if continued use of it is harmful in some way to the colour or the shine of the bike.

i will most likely soon buy more standard cleaning materials (wax polishers and so on) meant for these purposes on these kinda bikes, but today i thought to just try out the good old Colin as yesterday's 150kms riding had left a bunch of insect and watery mud spots here and there and so wanted to clean it as the first thing to do today. Colin is an established and preferred cleaning agent for objects made of glass, metal, plastic so i suppose there won't be any abrasive action on the fairing etc, but will the colour somehow start getting diminished or something over a long term use of Colin is what i am wondering.

Dont use colin on fairing or tank . It will deteriorate paint quality . Colin is good for mirror and home appliances . If you want to remove bug spots try automotive shampoo from Waxpol or motomax and mix water and slowly wet the spot area , rubbing will cause minor scrathes called swirl marks . If you slowly keep wetting and removing stains it wont create much problem to paint work . If possible get a Micro Fiber cloth , it does not create swirl marks as opposed to normal cotton cloth .
