  • Got My baby Duke on 24th November. Going on below 5k rmp. Have completed 500 Km odd Kms.
Rode it yesterday in heavy rain, and after i reached home and allowed it idle a burning smell arose. When i called up the Service guy he told that its normal after its ridden in rain. Still am not convinced . has anyone experienced such thing ??

And, Should i change my Engine Oil now to Motul now or should i wait for my first service ?

    • I just had it with the noise from the uneven bent links in my 2nd chain(in 6 months) and decided to go out and get a new chain sprocket kit from KTM and what I am about to say will save all of you atleast Rs.600. I went to the Lower Parel Svc center and asked them for the kit and they gave me the individual parts like the rear sprocket and the chain but the front sprocket was nowhere to be seen, then when I asked about it the Store Manager said that he'd try and search for it and in the meanwhile he came back with a small square box and said here's everything and to my dismay when I opened the box there it all was the front & rear sprocket and the chain all in one!!! Just to break it down for you guys the chain on its own is Rs.952, the rear sprocket another Rs.752 and the front sprocket about 295 I'm estimating...so all this would add up to Rs.1999 while the entire kit I purchased was JUST for Rs.1481. So hope this helps someone out there.

Anyway what I'd like to know is today I visited a Bharat Petroleum Petrol Bunk and there was Speed97 and Speed. When I asked the attendant about Speed93 he said that the Speed option was just that. So I filled "Speed" so was the attendant right? Is Speed 93 Octane or does it have to have the tag Speed93 just like Speed97 does?
Normal petrol (91 octane) is different from Speed 93( RON 93) and Speed 97 (RON 97).....lesser the resarch octane no(RON) more will be engine's tendency to knock. High RON of fuel allows the A/F mixture to ignite quickly reducing the Ignition Delay period and thus reducing auto-ignition of a/f mixture which causes knocking in petrol engines. It is only a measure
of the fuel's tendency to burn in a controlled
manner, rather than exploding in an
uncontrolled manner. Usually these high RON fuels have high quantity of iso-octane which inherits an anti-knock property. Therefore RON goes beyond 100 for fuels like LPG methanol etc. Lead was one of such additives used in good quality petrols but use of Leaded fuels have been phased out long ago.

            • guys again a new problem

when ever i change the gears at above 6000 rpm i get a strange kind of khat noise as if the sprocket is gonna break no sooner
              why is it so ?
the sound comes only when i change the rpm above 6000 rpm
im tired of going to SVC every thrice a week

It's quite possible that you either have the wrong clutch setting i.e. too tight or too loose so experiment with 2-3 clutch settings from extremely loose to tight and you should find something in the middle that hits the sweet spot for all your gears whether up shifting or down shifting. Beyond that I would also haev that chain of yours lookoed at by a good mechanic to find any warped or damaged links in the chain that tend to slip on the sprockets causing hard shifts or sprocket breaking shifts as you put it.

                • Hey guys !

Got duked 4 days back !
Will be heading for first service tomorrow.
The only issues I had with the bike so far is the right mirror coming loose and the rear indicator dangling cause the nut securing it fell off and was rattling somewhere inside.

I am glad I got this bike, although the chain requires a lot of attention than I'd like to pay. Anyhow everything else seems to be working excellently, I am getting a fuel efficiency of 35-41 kmpl as of now. Only grouse that remains is the really low fuel tank range (since I have a P220)

Have the KTM accessories been launched ? I am looking for the numberplate and crash bobbins to put on my duke.

                    • i've used speed 97 many a times and yes i can feel a clear difference in pick up and average. The downside apart from high price is that in traffic the engine gets more heated than usual.

Could it be that it's in your head? It makes NO DIFFERENCE to the Duke's engine what so ever because it doesn't have nearly high enough compression ratio. My personal experience and logical scientific evidence suggests that fuel itself will not affect performance (unless it's crap fuel or something very exotic which isn't commercially available). With a compression ratio of 11.3:1 it would run equally well on 86 octane rating fuel too (both performance, fuel efficiency wise). There is no logical reason to fuel with 97 octane petrol for the duke. (i only reason i use it is because it's in my nature to go over-spec and it's available at a fuel station on my daily route). Speed/power is probably the best choice for our bikes, that is if the carbon-deposit-cleaning additives really work, otherwise regular unleaded petrol works perfectly fine.

Xeno, I am doing good. Looking forward to meet you.

It was raining yesterday. I rode the bike in the rain. The bike was too dirty. Did clean the bike today at home. Now I can see the Engine Diagnosis Warning Lamp is always ON.

                              Hope it disappears soon
