      • KTM Duke 200 Steering Trouble.

I'm owning a KTM duke 200 since the past 8 months and since last month I have been having trouble with my steering. Right now, my steering gives resistance for the first few degrees while turning and then goes smooth, because of this i'm unable to make sharp turns, and quick movements are restricted.
A month back my steering nut was loose and got it tightened at the KTM service center and the next week I realized my fork oil was leaking and got the seal replaced, my steering was haywire when the fork oil was leaking. As I thought everything was alright, this problem creeped up. I haven't had a crash nor Have I hit a hard bump recently, also my Tyre pressure is perfect. If anybody has any insight to my trouble. Please share.

Well, sound reappearing after 2-3 hours of riding is a concern. Maybe the problem you are facing is due to chain slapping against the rubber padding on the swingarm. Have a look at this page:

Check the rubber padding from the pic in that page, maybe you can show this to svc guys or glue the padding upwards like others with the problem did.

What kind of sound? Can you describe it?

If it's not a loud sound but a weak sound of a chain rolling around sprockets then it's OK, some bikes simply have little more audible chain. The bigger the bike the more audible it is.

If not then check if they tightened the chain properly, Duke should have only 5-7mm free play, less than normally on other bikes. If the chain is loose it'll hit the slider sometimes.

Or check the rear wheel alignment. Or check the sprockets and every link of the chain, if there's some damage in one tooth or link. Or the rubber thingie as written above...

There is another khat (or thump) sound that comes when the mud guard part that holds the reg plate hits the tire or the tire hugger, when you go across holes. You can check and see if the plastic part which holds the rear reflection light has a dent from those hits.
You can try to tighten all the bolts on that mud guard, but that's just a design flaw that isn't really that important, tbh.

Sounds like the steering nut got tightened a bit too much. So how about taking the bike to service center and tell them to adjust it properly, not too loose, not too tight, and then test the bike yourself until you're satisfied.
Fork oil leak was a separate thing that added to the steering problem, but, as you say, that's sorted out now.
I know from my experience that low tire pressure can affect steering and handling quite a bit. Maybe you can try to increase the tire pressure just 1 or 2 PS over the recommended tire pressures of 25/28.5 PS (or 25/31 PS when with pillion) and see if it gets better. Also, some air pumps don't have accurate pressure readings, that happened to me few times and it took me some time to realize the tire pressure was too low.

                • Hi Dukers.
On Saturday I attended a 'DO IT YOURSELF' program conducted at KTM Langford Bangalore A couple of engineers hosted the event and few Dukers were the attendees. Chandra Sekhar (KTM engineer) explained few tips for taking care of the bike and also replied to many queries with patience . As a part of this event they gave few updates on D390 and also displayed RC8

                  • 1st Service Done!

                    Hey guys,

Got my first service done today from Sai service, pune. reached there around 9:30 AM, Met the service advisor and gave him a summary of the things that i wanted checked. the list is pretty small and the bike's been running smooth so far. Here are the items I asked them to look into:

                    1. Gear shifter was a bit loose: asked them to tighten it.
                    2. rear brake lever was loose as well, asked them to reduce the play
                    3. throttle lever had too much play as well, asked them to reduce that as well.
                    4. radiator cleaning and chain lubing (general)

Asked him about the oil, he said Bajaj DTS-i 10000 was compulsory and pointed to the manual. I wasn't in any mood to argue else would've clearly shown him that its either that or any equivalent 20w50 oil, written in the service leaflet. Anyway, I plan to run the bike on this oil for a few more days, then will probably switch to Motul 5100 or shell Ax7.

All other items were completed satisfactorily and I was keeping a close watch on the jobs being performed by standing right next to it Total bill came to Rs. 648, couldnt get the computerised bill due to some system error, he said they will email me the bill later.

Came back to office, no changes yet. Will take it for a spin in the evening and check out the details

                    Regards

How's the gear shifting experience before and after the service? especially from 2nd to 1st and vice versa. I am facing some problem with that(needs to put some effort while shifting).

                      • Had a bizarre experience yesterday while returning home from office.

Riding on 2nd gear, I shifted to 3rd and slowly let the clutch out. As soon as clutch reached the end, I got a sudden jerk (Bike came to a stop almost and started running). I thought it might have been some mistake. Then I shifted to 4th and experienced the same as soon as the clutch was left all out. I slowed down bike and kept riding. Then tested the same with 3rd and 2nd and 1st gear. So I stopped the bike on side. Turned the ignition off (both switch and key) and then started it again. After that the bike seemed to ran as usual. So again I increased my speed, and while on 4th gear the engine turned off. Tried starting the bike as it was still moving but couldn't. Pulled the bike to a side again. Tried starting and it didn't. Turned it off, waited for period, moved the biked forward and backward, still couldn't. FOr once, it did start, but as soon as put the gear in 1st, engine turned off,

Thought I might have to drag the bike til home. Gave it a last try, as soon as I pressed the Start button I rolled the throttle in. And it started. After that rode the bike to home not releasing the full clutch.
Took a test ride in night, everything seemed fine. Came to office this morning, didn't give a problem (but wasn't confident while driving it, didn't speed much).

Any opinions on what could have happened yesterday?

                          Hey Zak,

Gear shifts have been pretty smooth on my bike since the beginning (touchwood). Took it out for around ~50kms yesterday, gearshifts were as smooth as ever! Hope this helps.

                          Take care

Check the Air filter and also the Spark plug. You can clean the air filter by removing the dust, this you can do it by yourself (But not with water). If you would have placed any cloth under the seat then probably it might be stopping the air flow. Some times this might happen because of the rust formed on the spark plug due to moisture.
