Though I think the forks should last much longer and a plain oil change might do the trick. Not so sure about the rear one. It makes a lot of screeching noise when the rear is pushed down, the bike being stationary. Anyone has any experience changing the oil or playing with the rear shock?
2) Sluggishness : The bike refuses to pull after 115-120 kmph in 6th. Though it will reach 134-135 somehow but with a lot of coaxing. The old instant surge is absent.
This is even evident in 4th and 5th gear.
3) Vibrations : I can feel it when pushed beyond 80 in 4th and 100 in 5th. In general at around 8k rpm, the bike kind of hits a wall and I have to bulldoze through the vibes to attain triple digit speeds. it's very annoying. I had changed my clutch plates the last time I serviced my bike on the advice of the emch and engineer hoping the bike would feel more eager. It did for a while but it's back to the vibey protesting monster. I suspect the shims need replacement, may be the cam chain too? My engine has never been opened and I think it needs a bit of an overhaul now that it's 36k on the odo. Will get the svc to look into it the next.
4) gear shifts are not slick anymore. Especially 4th to 5th. I have had countless misshifts of late. The gear would suddenly dangle in between 4th and 5th when an upshift is tried with the engine protesting in a scream. Need to get that sorted. I am dreading the svc 'advising' a replacement of the gear box.
Btw I decided to ride without gear to office today. This was after days spent in getting soaked in sweat in the Mumbai October heat. And my wretched luck ensured that I take a fall today.Right infront of my office gate. It was minor however with a small bruise and a sightly hurt knee and a sore left palm while the bike escaped with only a bent leg guard, but does drive home this point :
You never know when and where you will run out of luck.
This happened when my ride almost finished in front of my gate and I was already thinking about office stuff.
My battery is now dead. I need to replace one. The console was flashing low battery yesterday on the way back home. The engine shut down midway. I ahd to ride with headlamps off and somehow reached home. The battery my bike had was Exide. What to replace it with ? Anyone has specs of the Duke battery? I couldn't find it in the manual. Any suggestions on Battery brands and where to geta good deal in Navi Mumbai? Should I contact the svc for replacement? I am more keen to get it done myselfThe hero always RIDES into the sunset!

Re: Update at 36000 km
Even mine was flashing the same message last week.. had to go through the same situation by keeping the head light off the entire way from office for 20kms on Highway..Originally posted by Doga View PostMy battery is now dead. But my battery was fine but it was not charging which was because the stator coil was kaput.. got it replaced under warranty.. no issues so far then.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Nope. Thing is, I had it serviced 2 weeks back (after a gap of 1 year) and was not personally present during whole of the servicing. I did ask them later if they changed the coolant and checked the level from outside, but didn't care to open the cap. Did not have any overheating issues during or before. Incidentally check it few days back when I was looking for something else and saw it was red.Originally posted by s1d View PostDrain it and check. It could be rust or engine oil mixed in to it. Its definitely not normal.
Did you change brand of coolant or add any additive in the coolant ? And i hope some miscreant hasn't opened the coolant cap and put some coca cola in to it !
Yesterday I drained and replaced it. Here's a pic:

There was water on the floor so its mixed with water.
Can someone answer what kind of coolant should we use?Last edited by sub-zero; 10-21-2014, 10:37 PM.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Coolant should always be Green, when it comes, especially to the Duke series. It shouldn't look red, or brown, red or brown usually means rusting of the internals of the radiator core. Green is the way to go! And pure water shouldn't be used in the bike. It must be used with 50 part water with 50 part antifreeze, the green liquid.
Cheers!

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Most probably rust. You could soon damage the water pump too. Remove the radiator and check.. also inspect the water pump.Originally posted by sub-zero View PostNope. You have two options for coolant recommended by ktm:
castrol - you need to mix it with 50% water
motul - its a premixed coolant that is to be used directly without dilution.
I haven't come across anyone that's used the coolant brands which are used on cars. my guess is they should be safe too.
Not sure if the duke can run safely on just distilled water for extended periods of time - but its mentioned by ktm that you can use water in case of an emergency.
Straight water or coolant in temperate climate like india is again a debate.. some say water is just fine while others recommend a specific coolant/premix to help keep rust at bay. The coolant contains some chemicals that are supposed to prevent rusting to an extent and keep the water pump in good shape.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
the radiator is usually a sealed unit and water inside will not cause rust (essentially the coolant itself is more than 50% water by content)Originally posted by sub-zero View PostThanks, bit worried now about rusting. Could be your radiator had a leak/hole or something and this could have caused air to enter and might have caused rust over a period of time. The rust could also be on the outer parts of the engine where the coolant circulates. First get the radiator and water pump inspected and flush the entire system with distilled water for a few minutes. Or better use a radiator flush (something like an additive/chemical that cleans up the rust, grime etc from the insides) if you can find one. http://www.snapdeal.com/product/abro...h-354ml/246767
Buy OWS - Radiator Flush OWS 430 (300ml) online at best price in India at Snapdeal. Shop online for OWS - Radiator Flush OWS 430 (300ml) and get Free Shipping, EMI* & CoD options across India.
Then use the recommended coolant and observe if it still changes color.Last edited by s1d; 10-22-2014, 12:41 AM.

Story time!Originally posted by sub-zero View PostThanks, bit worried now about rusting. I will get the radiator opened and checked . What if there's rusting? Rust is basically caused by two reaons, old worn radiator or usage of brine impure water. I've seen cars, (extend my gratitude to these lunatics) where they just fill water instead of the proper coolant mixture. Result? Water evaporates quicker and leaves hot spots in radiator, for example. if a radiator is filled only with water, say around one liter total capacity, now the engine runs for 600 odd kms the water vapourizes say 400 ML taking normal brine water that we get these days, this brine water leaves deposits in the radiator which constantly getting heated and cooled so this makes the metal weak and highly prone to rust, eventually the water vapourizes and causes total rust and these tend to ball up overtime and cause gunk which can plug all sort of tight passages and can be a pain in the arse big time. Wow!
So no rupture means you'll have leak no rust. Rust equals just water, no coolant. With coolant you won't have rust, 95% of the time.
Cheers!

Re: Update at 36000 km
The battery spec according to the manual is 'exide vrla 12v 8Amp' (battery voltage:12V , Nominal capacity: 8Ah, maintenance free.)Originally posted by Doga View PostAnyone has specs of the Duke battery? i picked up the d200 a few days ago, battery info is provided towards the end of the manual on pg135 i think under the 'techinal data' heading
I haven't checked what is on the bike though.
When i did some googling on exide and amaron, they do not seem to have a 8Ah , but only a 9Ah.. Weird, i will take a look at the battery on my bike to see what its rating is.

Re: Update at 36000 km
Ok, the exide battery vrla 12v 8Amp mentioned in the manual seems to be a 'OEM' type from exide. It is not listed under the commonly sold (to customers) battery models. Also exide seems to have rebranded some of its batteries of late. amaron and exide only list a 9Ah battery on their websites.
I think if you ask the svc for the battery, they would charge you a bomb.. normally the battery should cost under 2k.. there is good chance this 'oem' gimmick might cost you more. Will have to hunt around some battery dealers to see if this 8Ah is being sold.
And a battery replacement is a 5 minute job and any dealer or yourself can fit it. Always remember to unplug the negative first and then positive. While reconnecting, connect positive first and then the negative.

Damn it my iPhone sent it again.!!!
I did in fact enquire about that. The ktm engineer from Hyderabad says it should be a direct fit but he'll tell me once the actual spare part arrives in stock. Will keep everyone posted
