• Re: KTM 200 Duke

Hello biker friends.
Am fairly new to this community as i recently joint in.

Have been following the posts on this thread for some time now since i am interested in getting a Duke myself. I must say it is quite full of knowledge and experiences and i have learnt a lot about the bike while reading here.

As i wrote earlier, I am interested in getting a Duke for myself as a daily commuter BUT not a new one.

Would like you all to suggest as I am a bit confused.

I spotted a used bike recently. Is about 1.5 years old and has a bit more over 16000 kms on the the odometer.

The guy said (and so i found out from others) that it has been sitting most of the time in his garage as he is a student and comes back only for a few days during holidays.

There are certain problems in it as i noticed.

1. The RPM tends to go up and down on its own when idling
I figured it might be a gunked up throttle body as it has been sitting idle quite a lot. I suppose needs cleaning or replacement.
Will getting it cleaned do?

2. Bike runs good but on lower RPMs it jerks as if not very happy...
Could be the throttle body again but i dont know...

3. There is a light just above the number plate which is broken. It seems they do not have that in the Service Station. Where can i get that?

4. The paint on the swing arm seems to have become dull due to some reason. Upon asking, he didn't know the reason either. Is that normal?

5. The Exhaust Pipe coming out of the engine seems to have started to pick up rust. It looked that way. But i didnt look closely.

6. Upon Bargaining on the above mentioned flaws, the guy quoted a price of Rs. 70000.
I live in Varanasi. Since there aren't that many Dukes here, I dont really know if this bike at this price is good deal or not.

I have convince him to get the throttle body replaced whether under warranty or paid; that would be his business. Also, the bike looks to be in fairly good shape. No deep scratches or bents. We compared the tyre with that of a friend's 390 and they seem to be in quite a good shape too. I know the batteries might need replacement too but thats not a problem.

Please suggest whether i should go ahead with the purchase.

Regards

That's normal on a cold engine, the rpm goes up initially and then settles down after the engine is warmed up. A audio/video would have helped understand if it was normal or something amiss.

maybe.. cleaning the throttle body and running an additive such as adon p in the fuel tank for two tankful's should help with the idle and jerkiness.

3. There is a light just above the number plate which is broken. It seems they do not have that in the Service Station. Where can i get that?
Service center is your best bet. ktm spares are not sold outside, and am not sure if this part is replaceable with another bikes part

4. The paint on the swing arm seems to have become dull due to some reason. Upon asking, he didn't know the reason either. Is that normal?

post some pictures

5. The Exhaust Pipe coming out of the engine seems to have started to pick up rust. It looked that way. But i didnt look closely.

Pictures again.. its normal for the exhaust to turn brown/black. if its really bad rust, then you are better of replacing the header pipe alone (around 2000rs i think)

6. Upon Bargaining on the above mentioned flaws, the guy quoted a price of Rs. 70000.

Sounds like a good price

Replies above in bold and a few pointers below:
The throttle body just requires cleaning.. no need to replace it.
Did you check the engine oil level ? If not do it.. if the oil level is too low, tread cautiously. might indicate negligence and heavy wear on the engine.

I would suggest you ride another duke 200 (at least a few times for a good 5km), say a test ride from the showroom and then make a fair comparison with this bike. That way you will have some baseline to compare and decide.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I did check the engine oil. Infact that was the first thing I checked. Also revved it hard at times. I've seen bikes with damaged Piston and cylinder giving out white smoke while doing so. Didn't see any of it on this bike.

The oil i could see in the engine was a bit more than halfway of the round window on the side and was fairly clean.

I suppose riding a few more dukes will help for come to a decision.
I'll try and post with images next.

As for the RPM, it was fluctuating while idling. Even after riding a few kilometres. I've seen some videos on YouTube with same issue with duke but with no solution or comments. I'll try and post the link in the morning.

Hello,

For the last 4-5 weeks, I can feel the handle a bit heavy to the right and when I go hands-free for testing, the bike does not go straight but start to move left. It's like bike is not one straight line but a bit diagonal. Handle looks straight but feels to the right . It's hard to explain.

I have got it checked from two service centers, by four of my friends and they don't feel like that. Is it all in my mind ? Please suggest what could be the reason if I can feel about the handle like that. Bike ODO is 16 K.

Thanks.

Few possibilities, check your tire pressure and see if it solves the problem, low or high of a tire pressure can cause such issues. Secondly check for loose T stem bolts, nuts and all the related peripherals, the Duke series is notorious for loosening bolts/nuts and what not pretty easily.

Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

I have checked tire pressure and I guess it's not related to that. Got Bolts/Nuts checked in last service. I can recall 3-4 very sudden bad bumps on road and once I hit a rear of a car which made a dent in his bumper but nothing on my side. Is there a possibility of something got twisted or bent like shockers or alignment ?

Hi, finally getting my first Duke. I wanted to know why (if) we need a tank-cap sticker and a tank guard...
I know it's for protection against scratches and wanted info from the rider who don't have it. The dealership guy is really shoving them down my throat saying protection and such. Thanks in advance.

Not needed. Those power-parts sold at the dealer are way too expensive. Just pay for the bike take it and run !(it includes crash guard, rear view mirrors, front mud flap -- these are NOT accessories and you need not pay extra for these.)

Do you know that the entire tank cover itself costs only around 1200rs ? of the tons of bikes that i've seen at the svc and my own bike i am yet to come across anyone who has damaged it due to lack of a tank pad.

They are just cosmetic stuff as far as i am concerned on the duke at least. Maybe if it was a bigger bike or one with metal tank (sans cover) that is prone to scratches then i would get a tank pad, on the duke its not a functional necessity.
Same goes with the tank cap sticker.. you can get cheaper ones later on online.

Yes.those power parts are way more costly and doesn't make sense at all to buy.the dealer is trying to earn money and that's all.as s1d mentioned just take the bike and MAKE SURE YOU DO A PROPER PDI and then vroom vroom from there.
You can search in eBay as you will get tons of stickers.

This in all probability can be either bent forks, either one of the forks are bent or one of the forks are either loose. Yes, as you've stated this can/might/could have twisted/affected something on your bike. Check the basics first and get them done at the SVC then observe how it fares, if it still persists, then we can investigate even further.

Cheers!

Oh dang! never realised this. The guy said, and I quote, "I'll throw in the crash guards for free." He said I'll be getting the anti-puncture liquid, and something else that I can't seem to recall, as accessories. He quoted 10k for accessories. Thanks man.

Yes don't buy any power parts.it looks stunning but trust me doesn't justify the price.
Just ask him for the bike and the default accessories that are included with the bike price.and that's about it.sometimes these dealers act like leeches !

You can get apache's end weights and 390's hand guards. That should be less than 1500 bucks.
