  • Re: KTM 200 Duke

    Good Day Bikers,

Like most guys here, even i ride a KTM.
A Duke 200 to be precise.

I have been facing this problem of water getting collected near the inlet of my fuel tank.
This happens as my servant washes the ride every morning.
It doesn't create a problem, not unless I open the Fuel Tank Cap to Re-feul my bike.
The water seeps in when the Tank Cap is opened.

The first Time this happened, a lot of water went in and I ended up draining all the Fuel from my tank.
I have approached the KTM service centre to solve this for me. They say there is a drain that they have cleaned and so water shall not accumulate again.
But its just for a couple of days after which the problem re-surfaces.

Lately i have been carrying sponges whenever i got to refuel, but its not a solution.

Could anybody help me out on the location of this so called drain or some alternative solution by which water won't accumulate.
I am currently considering replacing the tank cap as my last resort.

    Any input will be appreciated.

My first suggestion would be to check the fuel cap holder allen keys, check to see if they are torqued rightly, though it's hard for water to pass from the sides of the filler cap, you just never know. Secondly, try replacing the fuel filler cap itself and see how it fares. A few drops of water is totally normal, pudding or excessive water inside the neck/ring means a defective filler cap.

      Cheers!

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

        Hi All,

        Pardon the lengthy post.

I am a long time lurker and I am posting for the first time.

        I own a Duke 200.

I fell off recently. Mostly my fault.
There was an elevated manhole on the left side of the road, not the extremely left but not in the middle either, and I was behind an auto. The auto swerved and I was left holding the baby.
Braked hard, skidded and hit the right edge of the manhole, both wheels were in the air for a second and then I crashed. Only a couple of scratches on me, helmet banged against the road with my head inside, but the bike was screwed.

Broke the right hand side mirror, the back brake pedal, right front and back indicators and the tank cover.
Bent the right brake lever and the handlebar. Luckily I have fork protectors so no fork bend.
Mostly plastic stuff so insurance gave me squat.

So I started upgrading everything to make my ride better and safer.
Started wearing gloves and a motorcycle jacket.

I am going to replace the headlight bulb with a Philips Xtreme Vision Plus. (was unable to see the manhole until it was too late at night)
Mainly, I want EBC FA 606HH brake pads but I am not unable to find anything.
Can anyone let me know of a shop in Hyderabad which sells this?

Also want to change my brake levers to one of the short levers? Will that make any difference?

And I want to change the handlebar to a Duke 390 bar with protectors and bar ends. Where can I get the orange ones in Hyderabad?

And for comfort, do we have a better seat? If yes, where can I buy it?

I have a couple more queries:
Whenever my motorcycle travels over gravel or sand, I can feel the rear tyre slip a little. This has been there from Day 1. More pronounced now because it has been 18000 kms without a tyre change. Is this normal?

My front brake lever feels spongy. This started after the 3rd free service. I had it bled a couple of times but after a few days it becomes spongy again. What can I do to fix this?

And a major concern: I am not able to downshift from 0 or 2nd gears to 1st gear. I have to literally bang on the gear lever to move down to 1st. This is killing me at traffic signals. I keep stomping on the lever and the guys behind me keep honking. Nowadays I am starting off from second gear. I had this checked at a KTM service center but those guys were unable to fix it. Can you help me out with this?

That's why I have to hold the handle from the right with a force much greater than from the right side and it feels very awkward and twisted. I will start with changing Triple Clamp and see if it works then if required the handle bar.
i rememebr lots of Pulsar AS200 had the same issue where if u leave the handlebar it sways left.

However one guy fixed it by changing the T-Stem

Get the drain vent cleaned regularly. Most of the times svc people skip that part. Its a common problem in Pulsars and the fuel cap assembly is the same in Dukes too. Get the Tank Cap spring checked once and also the part which locks the cap inside the tank (might be faulty).

This scene can be worse if you ever park your bike in an open area while its raining !!

Better go for stock duke/pulsar bar ends. I use Stock Pulsar ones and they reduce vibrations

And regarding the tyres. Yes, it slips even for me... Either don't drive on sand and gravel or get used to the bike's slipping behavior n control it. I feel it's because of the round less groovy profile of tyres that they give less grip on sand, our tyres are meant to give good grip on proper roads.

U can try Ceat Vertigo for grip on those surfaces.

For your gears i think u need to change ur clutch plate.

I have no idea about the spongy brakes. Maybe a brakepad upgrade should solve your problem.

Never follow a vehicle's line directly, leave adequate space. Holds true for driving as well. As bikers, if we crash, it's our fault. Always try and anticipate others' movement. Ascribe to them foolish motives and expect that they WILL do something stupid or sudden. A few vehicles like tractors, autos, loading tempos, old uncles on unmaintained scooters, etc should have your alarm bells ringing!

Braked hard, skidded and hit the right edge of the manhole, both wheels were in the air for a second and then I crashed. Only a couple of scratches on me, helmet banged against the road with my head inside, but the bike was screwed.
Glad you're fine brother. Do remember to replace the helmet. It's already done what it was supposed to do and should now decorate your room only!

So I started upgrading everything to make my ride better and safer.
                thumbs up!

Also want to change my brake levers to one of the short levers? Will that make any difference?
Avoid Chinese or other unbranded or non-recommended levers. I've heard of a few cheap levers (esp adjustable ones) just binding hard with the master cylinder 'button' (can't remember exact term) leading to an extreme crash.

My front brake lever feels spongy. This started after the 3rd free service. I had it bled a couple of times but after a few days it becomes spongy again. What can I do to fix this?
If it has been properly bled, and still becomes spongy after a few days, it's the problem with our master cylinder and reservoir acquiring air/moisture from the environment faster compared to other bikes. Foreign forums have info on this, please see those. I also remember reading in some KTM ownership thread (Duke 390?) a member put a bullet classic front brake reservoir. Don't remember if the master cylinder was changed as well. You can search and ask him for a review of that setup.

And a major concern: I am not able to downshift from 0 or 2nd gears to 1st gear. I have to literally bang on the gear lever to move down to 1st. This is killing me at traffic signals. Can you help me out with this?
maybe the lever is bent, or the connecting rod. Please try replacing or borrowing the setup and see if the feel improves.
                Replies in bold man.

                    Hi getbacktosrinu,

I got my gel pads from 'Biking Spirit' in Bangalore. Mine is the 1 inch thick gel's.

I got that decal design online... And got it fabricated locally here.

                        • Roaring sound in DUKE 200 after changing chain sprocket.

                          Hi Guys,

This is my first post here so please cooperate.

I have a KTM DUKE 200 (2014 model). Clocked 25000 kms. Recently I had to change my chain sprocket at KTM service centre in Lower Parel (Mumbai). Since its changed, bike makes a roaring sound when it exceeds 70 kmph. I have shown it to the service centre but it seems that they are unable to understand the problem and there is no way to get if off. I made a complain too about this but it seems useless they are least bothered about it.

Additionally if there are any 3rd party experts service centres servicing dukes in Mumbai, please let me know. Seems KTM Authorised service centres are not helpful. Any help would be appreciated.

                          Regards

It can be a good bike or worst bike depending on how controlled the beginner is. It's an 'exciting' bike would tease you to go faster and become a hooligan. So if you are a mature rider in head and can control yourself sensibly it's a good bike for anyone.
I would suggest you to first get used to mechanics of geared bike by using your friend's bikes and learn from them also.

Thanks for your reply. Roaring sound comes from the area near the stand. I mean the front chain sprocket.
