Not a D390 owner (200ns one)
Hello guys and I'm sad to see the amount of pain you guys are experiencing even after buying a premium 2 L₹ bike. Stalling of bike like it's a common feature, rims cracking so easily, etc etc. Even not being a owner, it gives a chill to see fellow riders in pain and bajaj f##king with another quality bomb.
Anyways, one of my friend is looking to buy D390 and has asked me to give the "opinion" . He comes from a cbr250 league (yeah those japs) and now wants to upgrade to this beast.
But the thing is, I'm scared to advise him D390 after reading all these pages of ownership, especially the rim cracking and stalling issues.
So I'm asking actual owners, will you suggest me to suggest him to buy D390 ...??

The way you have written 'yeah those japs' tells me you haven't done your homework. Cbr was itself a quality disaster with many issues at the time of launch but they have refined it with time. It is the same with most of the new products.

Also the new lot of 390's are much better and no issues have been reported, also for the initial lots the issues are being sorted out. My bike is one such example, the bike is running exceptionally good after giving me a headache for 2 months. Kudos to the svc fellows. And thanks ktm for the most vfm pocket rocket.

Ask him to td and get the bike as the character is not to everyone's liking.
It can bite back..

I am one of the guys facing the stalling issue and the issue is on the severe end. However, I have said time and again that some of the bikes from the initial lots are the only ones facing any kind of issue. Go through the thread and you will find that there are almost no complaints from any new owners. Go ahead take a test ride yourself and then decide whether you would want your friend to have this awesome machine or not.

I am writing this long emotional post because somewhere I feel bad every time my bike stalls, I almost skip a heartbeat, might sound crazy but thats how it is. What makes me feel even worse is so many people saying all that they are against the bike. People who ride the bike shouldn't be doing it, cause they are the ones who know how awesome the feeling is to ride it! Every time I pull the clutch engage the gear and curl my wrist It makes me come alive! apart from the four times that it has stalled :P
I have not come across anyone saying anything against the pull the bike generates. 390 is mainly being loved for those 43 odd horses and when unleashed, it surely brings smile to us, the budget based and power hungry. 390 also scores some brownie pointers for the ABS the metz, braking, radical looks and the brand association. I am sure almost all of us love our 390 for these. Dont think anyone who has experienced a 390 on an open highway or on the ghats can say anything against it in general. A few quality based niggles, etc is what ppl here been cribbing/complaining about which is usually the case with any new product launch. also, cribbing on forum like these are a good source for manufacturers to understand their consumers and their need / psyche. Hope bajaj and ktm take the positives from these to further improve their products.

1. I've no idea
2. You can go to any shop which stiches seat cover, they can add layers of faom in between and then stich a cover on top of that
3. It will deifnetly improve but don;t expect a miracle
4. No, there will be enough no. of petrol pump
Thanks a lot bro
I believe photography skills are considerably easy to acquire and I guess everyone can do it.
Will get the seat cover and headlamps today, and a louder horn
I am sure there are enough fuel stations on the route that I am planning but I will still carry 4-5 litres of fuel, just in case.

@archanmishra Thanks a lot bro
Anuj_Gupta As everyone else said a test ride is the best way to decide. But Just tell your friend to keep in mind that these demo bikes are really roughened up so are a bit rash and problematic at times, although I guess you are already aware of that.

I have a few more queries :
1. After going through the relevant threads I guess the cramster colt saddle bags are the best option. Am i missing out on something ?
2. Anyone with any inputs on the Pirelli Sport demon ?
3. Anyone using the Wind shield that is available as a powerpart ? Looks a bit too small so I am curios if its worth it or not.
4. And any pointers that I should keep in mind while riding in the hills ? As I have no prior experience of riding in the hills.

Ride as slow as you can first else you are sure to hit those break's hard - atleast I did being a rookie rider. Respect the curves though they are beautiful they are quite dangerous

I actually came here after reading people mentioning the stalling issue in other threads(specifically the RC390 and Hero Hx250r ones). I mentioned around three weeks ago about the problem here, and till now I have faced it 4 times and I have clocked 2k Kms on the bike. The point I want to make is why do we have to go crazy about this ? I know all of us who bought the 390, we did so by paying a premium, a healthy one at that but are you really that disappointed with the bike !?
I had the duke 200 before this and I faced like 10 times the trouble with it ! literally. Chain became almost useless after 10k, Light bulbs gave up on me, the dreaded seepage problem, cold start issues, front shock seals broke and what not! but even that bike made me happy every time I rode it ! Thats why I didnt hesitate at all before getting the 390. I test rode almost every bike that deserved a consideration, CBR250r, Classic 500,RE Thindirbird and a friends Ninja but when I finally rode the 390 I knew nothing else would be as satisfying.!
My uncle owns a classic 350, and an old 63 model RE. I once asked him that how does he manage to live with those bikes even after the amount of issues they have! All he said was that he couldn't explain it to me even if he wanted and he said the question will answer itself when someday I get hooked to a ride like he is to his. And I guess I know now what He was trying to say!. My dad on the other hand says that its a pattern and this happens every time something new comes out, its a machine, it cant be perfect as almost nothing is.

I am writing this long emotional post because somewhere I feel bad every time my bike stalls, I almost skip a heartbeat, might sound crazy but thats how it is. At the same time I am not saying we should just ignore it and live with it! Bajaj and Ktm has to sort this out ! Its our hard earned money after all! And somewhere I know it will be sorted out. But at least I dont feel cheated or anything of that sorts .
If this post doesnt make any sense then it can be just ignored cause I had to get it out of my system. And I think its best done here cause a few of you might know how I feel!
I have had a fun ride with the bike till now, no problems apart from the stalling and I will try and shift to premium fuel after the second service.I have done a 600km ride in a day on the bike and that went flawless. will be taking her to the hills in a couple of weeks . And I wish all of the bikes facing the stalling problem a healthy recovery
Adding a couple of pictures of my bike

And I almost forgot the important part :P I have a couple of queries regarding some changes I want to carry out :
1. I want to know if the pirelli sport demon is a good option for a dual purpose tyre on the 390 with all that power ?
2. How does one add foam to the seat ? By adding foam and putting a leather cover on it ?
3. Will philips extreme vision H4 perform better than the default headlamp ?
4. Do I need to worry about fuel availability if I am riding on the following route :
New delhi - Ambala - Panchkula - shimla - Narkanda and may be reckong peo and kaza. On my previous ride on the highways the bike returned a mileage of 25-26 kmpl. It was all in plains though mainly on NH2.
Great summary Abhishek. I do understand that many of the posts are not in good taste and I hope discussing such issues helps manufacturers know about them and find fixes. And oh, the pictures are brilliant

Here is my take on this. Although a lot of people have confirmed that the issues were observed only with the older batch of vehicles, I'd say wait till more people with the newer batch bikes clock a few thousand kms. Waiting another month or two will not be a deal breaker. Moreover your friend will have a clearer picture of the RC390 as well meanwhile and may have many options to pick from in the 2nd quarter of the year.

There are many pointers one can give as far as riding the hills is concerned, if there is something specific you can ask or else just keep in mind that this bike is too good in the hills and confidence inspiring. It is very stable on corners and pulls easily and you don't really feel you are going uphill. Just make sure that you don't overshoot corners which might be really dangerous due to oncoming traffic and always "cut" corners and don't take a corner from the inside. Ride safe!

Agreed.

Long time back i had seen a case in the Duke 200 ownership thread, wherein a newly purchased Duke 200 had a Rusted Rear Shock... i guess they store the shocks in damp condition...

Also if you carefully look at the frame which holds the tyre hugger (the black rod), the paint finish on those is awful...

Last night, on my way home from work (22kms distance), i could stall the bike at will (60%). This is how it goes. mostly in 2nd or 3rd gear, speeds of around 20-60kmph, accelerate the bike to around 5000rpm, pull the clutch completely, and simultaneously release the throttle completely, and voila! the bike stalls. Happened too many times even to remember last evening. And i could also stop the bike from stalling by not closing the throttle completely, But thats an added mental load, and an annoying one. THis morning on my way to work, it just stalled twice as i was consciously not letting go of the throttle completely. Have fixed an appointment with autoservice, banashankari, for this saturday to look in to the matter.

a few observations:
At slightly higher speed when the bike stalls, release the clutch (in gear) and the bike restarts again and continues.
At times, the bike starts without rebooting even in gear (clutch pressed)
At times it refuses to start. got the get it to neutral, reboot and try

i have been running on normal petrol from day one. could that be related? the feeling is like clogged injector, or low idling rpm. ( but on console it hovers around 1.4 to 1.6 k RPM, which i guess is the usual).

I am damn confused and worried, and i dont even have my second bike, as its opened up for a paint job.
Looks like a bad fuel pump or clogged injector..

Normal petrol may not be the issue...

Its a shame that the service center people have to work so hard to rectify a simple issue...

One more thing, ask them to clean the air filter properly..

4. Till Simla you will have many petrol pumps, Simala to Narkanda 3 pumps. and lot of Black ice if you are going now. Its been a month i am still recovering from my right knee Ligament fracture.
Narkanda have the a petrol pump but they are on limited supply right now. Ahead of it Petrol pump around every 100kms. and Lotsa White ice.
Have fun and ride safe as there will be many nutty car drivers who don't know anything about ice.

1. I use dirt-track saddle bags and it has served me well on my last bike for more than 10K kms but I haven't tried it yet on D390.
2. I don't think they have the sizes for D390 ( I mean for both front & Rear)
3. KTM windshield is a joke .Get a Fazer/CBR 's windshield and fit it yourself .Would hardly cost you anything compared to KTM
4. Hills are very tricky ,they test both you and your bike. Be slow on curves and hairpin bends and concentrate on your line.
Don't ever try to come downhill on neutral , a perilous blunder that many people do.

1st Service experience @ BTM

Went for my 1st Service last Saturday @ 9:15am. None was present except another Duke 200 and its owner waiting for the same reason.
Chit-chatted with him till 9:30 when a service guy came then a showroom guy and finally the key person ( I mean the person with the key ,I am really bad with names)

I wanted to be there the entire time my 'Mastiff' gets serviced and so requested the SVC manager to take mine first.
He obliged and so my bike went for washing . I asked them to open the front sprocket and wash that area well since I had seen a lot of muck there.
All that which is written on the rear counterfoil of the first service was done in front of me.
It was good to see my 'Mastiff' getting pampered almost like well ...(Dog lovers would know when you give them a bath). The SVC people were very courteous when I was asking things and I made sure I don't interfere much but observe and understand things.

He did plug-in the ECU monitor to check all the parameters but forgot to change RPM1/RPM2 and the service counter which I discovered later.
I did that myself which actually is pretty easy.

In one instance while checking my rear tire I found a nail deep into the tire much to my surprise .
This gave me a mixed feeling because it had shown me no signs either in handling or drop of air pressure but at the same time it reminded that the tire is sensitive. But anyway I got the nail removed and they put in the patti which they had with them.

So my rating for them would be 7/10

With the ignition on, hit the 'mode' button til you get the ODO reading.
Hit the 'set' button til you get the service distance at the top,
Hold 'set' for 15 seconds,
It should now have reset to 5,000kms

Please do not attempt to overtake large vehicles like buses, trucks and minibuses on their left side like we do in city traffic or around a blind corner. Patience is the key. Most drivers of such vehicles signal you to pass, if you honk and hang in at at their tail at a safe distance.

About cornering, I will try and post a link to a video, which suggests the best line around curves, once I get home.

Don't ever try to come downhill on neutral , a perilous blunder that many people do.
I strongly +1 to what Nelson has mentioned in bold.

Shubhabrata Marmar of OD has tried the KTM windscreen and says that its useless. Similar feedback has been received from other riders too.

And, ride in the correct gear while going downhill. Also, keep you eyes not directly on the road in front, but at the end of the curve while going uphill.
