  • KTM Duke 390

After riding many bikes for almost 13 years I finally got my hands on to KTM Duke 390 on 31'st Dec 2014. I was lucky to be going on the last day of the year because I was expecting the prices to go up from next day. I visited KTM Probiking showroom in BTM layout to book my bike and I still regret about my decision to do so. I will explain my dismay later, for now I will start with the good stuff. After waiting for a very long time since the launch of Duke 390 and a fierce battle between my heart and my fluctuating mind on the biggest question of the year should it be CBR 250 R or Duke 390, and a bit of filmi style drama of booking and cancelling CBR 250 R I finally went ahead with the decision to buy Duke 390. If I would had got CBR 250 R then I would have cheated myself! The Booking process:I and my friend went to KTM BTM Layout showroom and found a bunch of unprofessional people in the sales department who suggested me to get the invoice done before 2 PM else I would be paying 6% extra. They insisted that I pay in cash so that the complete process is faster. I headed to MG road bank and draw the money and came back to the showroom and got the invoice done.Later I and my friend went to the Garepalya stock yard to take a first look at my monster and I found him staring at me at a distance. Oh Boy that was an amazing sight.I got the bike delivered on evening 6.30 PM on 2nd Jan 2015. The dealer then added a twist saying that the bike has not been registered yet they will get it done on 3rd Jan and give me the number.I was very happy to look at the bike and I was excited to hear the monster fire up to life for the first time. The roar and the grunt was awe inspiring!. The First Ride:I was used to riding duke 200 so I knew exactly what to expect on first ride and I bet Duke 390 definitely exceeded my expectation by a good margin. After riding home and filling the tank with 10 ltr of fuel, which to me was a bit disappointing from a tourer perspective, I did a brief pooja at a local temple and prayed for the safety and many miles of hassle free biking.I and couple of my friends decided to take a free ride in the night to test the bike thoroughly, we decided to travel about a 100 KM for dinner. yes you heard it right!after riding the bike for 200 KM round trip below are my observations:> Excellent handling I would give full credits to the Metzeler coupled with WP suspension the bike was glued to the surface.> ABS definitely a life saver. The Bosch ABS gives a lot of confidence to brake late into the corners.> Power surge is almost instantaneous.> The bikes asks to be revved, I need to get the running in done ASAP.Some niggles I had were:> False neutrals during the down shift, I could see the gear lever slip between 5th and 4th gear at 5K RPM> As with many higher capacity bikes the bike makes sound when shifting gear, I have not mastered the upshifting by proper rev matching totally eliminated the 'Thak'> Riding in traffic is not exactly comfortable but since I live in Bangalore I can't complain much.> Clutch is heavy but when equipped with proper gloves I did not find it much of an issue. In total I completed 600 KM of ride in less than 24 hours of bike Delivery I wish to write my experience after taking it for first service this week.First look I wish to upload more photos in future.http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/attachme...b=1&stc=1P.S.I would NOT recommend anyone to visit KTM BTM dealer. I am chasing them for registering my bike from 3rd and they have still not completed the procedure. They lie on the face, they said to me that the road tax has been done they are just waiting for number. I wasted 2 days visiting them to hear their petty excuses.

How is the pirelli sport demon for 390 in comparison to michellin pilot street radial.
Revs.co.in seems to be giving a good deal.

HELP!! Which is the best place (economical)to buy Metzeler Tyres in Bangalore? I am not in touch with any regular service center, as all my services so far have been done at Autoservice. And they do not deal with tyres. Any leads would be helpful, as the bike is done 14700 kms and rear is almost reached TWI. Thanks!
Would like to continue with metzs although they cost much, am a bit skeptical about changing to another make.

SVCs are the cheapest place to get Metz. It was 8700/- and Kasturba SVC had stock the last time I checked. In any other tyre store the price is around 12k+.

Btw I had recently changed to Michelin Pilot Street radial and it serves the purpose just fine. Its price varies from 5.2-6k depending on stores

For front you get the stock size of 110/70 but for rear it is 140/70 but with this rear the change I see is that the bike turns in a bit more quickly than before, thats all. Dont find any problems with it and I got it from Sai Iyengar tyre store in Indiranagar.

And MRF Revz C is duke 200 tyres right? I would advise against it as you have to be really careful in corners esp with your throttle. The difference due to this tyre was clear in our last KTM track day and the guy on MRF was really stuggling on wet corners. Dont risk your safety by saving a couple of thousands. Get Michelin or go for Metz only if you can get it

Thanks Bro for the shop location.
About the mrf revz c. all i am looking at is better mileage. Im not much of a track person nor the cornering stuff, just like to travel. Sometime on highway i do touch 150kmh but most of the time i drive at 80-130kmh. any idea about metzler m7 rr price & how are your Spartan boots doing, have they got soften are there any issue. its been almost a year.

                Cheers

I gave the example of track because that is where we can get a fair comparison on actual grip offered by tyres. There is no doubt a better tyre will make you safer on the road as well even when you are going on slow corners (if it is wet, has gravel etc). And the michelins do last longer than Metz. My friend had done Blore - Rajasthan tour and the tyre had done a total of 8k kms and looked as if it had done only a couple of thousand kms.

It is a softer variant of Sportec M5 IIRC and its more expensive as well. Not sure if its available in Blore.

Spartan Boots? Oh you saw the signature is it?
The boots are doing fine, really helps on long rides. But at the joint near ankle stitch has come off and I have to get it repaired from a cobbler. It mostly happened due to too much walking as I did couple of mini treks and long walks in those boots

                      Hi

I need some expert advice/ suggestions/ tips for the following query.
As you all are aware, the major drawback of D390 is the small tank range and miniature pillion seat. Recently I had been to Dandeli, Anshi reserve forest and Ulavi temple on my D390 and was accompanied by two other bikes, a Karizma and a Enfield Electra. I will put up a brief travelogue as and when I find some time. Right now am planning for a trip to Shimoga on my bike tomorrow. As I have observed during these long drives, pillion seat is just for aesthetics, some may argue saying that it is ok for them or comfy but I come from a background of thumpers and I find the pillion seat uncomfortable as said by many of my friends who have sat pillion( I have sat pillion only once till now). This has also been a major grouse of my fiancee who says that I am selfish coz I bought D390 which is a single seater according to her.

And tank range is anywhere between 270-310kms depending upon the enthusiasm of our right wrist. And as a furtherance of this pain, we have to be constantly aware of the fuel pump which may get damaged in case of very low fuel in the tank. Apart from these two issues I absolutely have no other complaints.

I scoured the internet for solutions, these are some of the few mentioned:

---> fabricate a new gas tank
---> add foam or gel pads to seats
                      ---> sell the bike

Another interesting option which I came across and has been haunting me ever since is converting D390 into a scrambler. I am ready to take the risk if the positives outweigh the negatives or if I can find a good affordable custom bike builder in India. I have even downloaded a few pics from google. Posting a few of those here.

I know that this is a tricky proposition, will go this way only if I do not find any other option to increase the tank range and seat mods.

                      Kindly give your valuable inputs.

                      TIA.

Hello everyone. Sorry for being so inactive for so many months, was busy with sisters marriage, shifting of house and semesters. Got time now,so i am writing about my hooligan.
                        SIX MONTHS,8000kms update.
My bike is running like a gem. Totally trouble free. Did the second service two months back at 5500kms. I changed the tyres to michelin pilot street radial at 6000kms. The tyres are pretty good, wet grip is also good. No problem with abs,if metz are 10/10, i would rate michelin 8.5/10 overall. With the rc 390 launched and duke 390 numbers increasing, i wanted my bike to perform better and look different from others. I installed a powertronic for my bike. This product is worth every penny. It totally transformed my duke 390. City rides is such a pleasure now with no jerks at all. The burst comes at a early 5k rpm and redlines at 11500rpm. Mileage also increased. Days passed and i wanted a exhaust,so i searched for it for a long time. The akra costed a bomb at 80000rs. Couldn't afford so much,so researched a lot and finally settled with gpr exhaust. The exhaust model name is GPR SPORTCAN. Booked it through gpr official website. Costed nearly 40000rs including customs. The exhaust note is just awesome. Grabs attention where ever i go. I got it delivered within 10 days.
Visual modifications include painting of alloys (black&orange) and raceline stickers and a few powerparts. I also installed a k&n replacement filter along with the exhaust. The performance of my already stunning duke 390 has become phenomenon. Race dynamics have sent a few maps to experiment and to choose the best which suits my needs. I recently topped at 192km/hr at chennai-bangalore highway. Recently went for a few trips to bangalore, kodaikanal and tirunelveli. The bike was such a gem during the trips. Waiting to clock more miles in it. Posting a few pictures. Thanks.

otherwise so if it redlines at 11k~ there is no over rev cut off jerk i am supposing?
besides please do a video of the exhaust!

Yes, i touched 192km/hr as per speedo reading. With the aero dynamics present in rc 200km/hr is achievable. The jerk present when you hit 10500rpm in a stock bike, the same jerk is present when you hit 11500rpm. But the agression of the cut off is very less.Yes,sure i will do a video soon. Thanks.

Finally a niggle that is irritating me. The key hole cover of the tank cap is rattling and I am not sure whats the workaround!

Got new tyres. Metzlers for my d390. Paid 17500 for the pair. Couldn't find them for a Lowe price in Delhi.
