Hello Friends, I had a question,
Does the 2016 version of Duke 390 come with extension for the front mudguard or we got to install it separately ?
Asking since monsoon is just 2 months away.
I hate being a pillion, iff the rider is senseless.

I bought the 2016 Duke 390 3 days ago. I noticed there is a huge *thad* noise each time I shift gears and it doesn't seem normal. I checked it with KTM service in Seawoods, Navi Mumbai and they said it is normal.
For example on stand still when I change to First Gear from neutral there is a small jerk and this noise. Is this common for the new ones? After 4th gear there is no noise and no problem in downshifting as well.
The guys also mentioned slipper clutch gives rise to more noise as well.
Anybody who owns the new 2016 version kindly share your inputs.

Thanks,
Rithul
Normal. It's not because it has slipper clutch or without it, the first gears always makes a prominent "thud" and it's completely normal and sometimes even when downshifting say from 2nd to 1st at slow to moderate speeds, they are present. Absolutely normal. Considering your bike is new, it would at least take 3k kms for the engine to smooth out all it's undulations.

Cheers!

The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

2016 (and the prev models) do come with the front mudguard extension as standard fitment. Its just that the rear view mirrors, tool kit and the mudflap come in a separate box and are installed during delivery.
In other words.. there are no extra charges for 'accessories' such as:
mud flap
saree guard
crash guard
rear view mirrors
rear mud guard

So be aware and don't get ripped off if they ask you to pay for 'accessories' or 'handling' charges. you only need to pay for ex-showroom+taxes+insurance (and registration optional if you want to do it thru them)

There is definitely noise when you change to 1st gear from neutral. However, I find that there is no gear shift noise when I change to 2nd and to higher gears if I upshift around 5k RPM. I have heard the noise you are mentioning when I shift up at lower RPM. Try changing at higher RPM and check if you hear any noise.

I suggest you to avoid Banashankari KTM as I had bad experience with them. I made a full payment on day 1 and got the bike on day 2. They would need time to get the registration done and you usually get the bike on 2nd day after making the full payment. Check with the dealer if they can do same day delivery. I suggest you not to hurry up with delivery and invest good time in doing proper PDI when there is sufficient daylight.

Hi guys,

Got the first service of the bike done today @895 kms reading on the odo, things changed
1- Oil Filter
2- Engine oil 1.5 ltrs
3- O rings of oil filter
4- Cleaning of Air filter
5-Chain clean and Lube

Paid INR 1495 for the service, and I m satisfied with the service done @ Sohna Road KTM in Gurgaon.

Did a weekend ride to Jaipur from Gurgaon yesterday and came back today.
Performance of the Beast-
1-From Gurgaon to Jaipur-Rode speeds of 95-105 kmph averaging 73 kmph ride time covering 250 kms.
2-Returned from Jaipur today morning and slightly increased the speeds to 100 kmph regular and 120kmph in short bursts inorder to use the entire revv range.
3- Mostly rode it in 5th gear, 6th gear is overdrive and it will not be useful until and unless you are just cruising.
4- Though it is new bike and before first service, got 26 kmpl mileage on the highway, and getting constantly 23-25 kmpl in the city(use it very less in the city, have other bike for the city)
5- Got it serviced and it took hardly 2 hours at the service station.

Can't wait to take it to hills in the coming days.

Hello guys, i am planning for a new bike with a budget of 2L . Drove the mojo (friend has it and it has an excellent engine), cbr (last rode it in 2011) , and then duke 390. I loved the duke due to its goodies and technical advantage but when i test drove it with a pillion(showroom guy) felt very uncomfortable. Has it happened with any of you ? Also it was a very very short ride and i wasn't able to go above 3rd or 4th gear. I just wasnt impressed. I am probably 6'1" . Any ides/suggestions?

Great thanks skanda! Any suggestions on where I should go? Also heard not so good things about Indiranagar.

Could you also share the pdi checklist you used to get yours? Will be super helpful for me. I plan to select the bike which is in Stock previous evening or first thing in the morning, do the pdi before I transfer everything and have them go register on the same day. I will most likely be at their showroom the whole day to expedite the process. And hopefully ride out by the evening. Registration is just a few hours no?

I also like your hard break in tech and will go with that.

Hope we get to ride together sometime!

I'm not sure of other showrooms as I did not have any interaction with other ones. I have attached the checklist that I followed. I think it's better if you book the bike previous evening so that they can get the registration done and deliver by next day evening. If I am not wrong, they need to take the bike to RTO for registration.

I actually did the hard break in method after 200kms(I know, pretty late) and did the first oil change at 240kms. If you like to do that, do it on an open road after midnight as traffic would be negligible. Rev engine to recommend 7k RPM at each gear and let the bike slow down to 5k RPM before upshifting. Do this 2 or 3 times. Repeat the process by upshifting at 8k RPM and then at 9k RPM and then change the oil to mineral or semi synthetic at the most (I used Motul 5100). Then change to fully synthetic oil at 1st service.

The sound when shifting to first is quite natural for bigger bikes and ours is a relatively big one. But the other gears ought to be smooth. You are facing it mostly cause of slack on the clutch cable or chain. They both see the most amount of stretching in the first few weeks of their operational life. Get them checked and adjusted. But since your bike is so new, some of the noise may be attributed to that too. I shift at ~4500 RPM and don't see any issues because I check both the chain and clutch for slack on a weekly basis.

P.S rev matching can make the downshifts significantly smoother and less noisy.
Must ride on!

Needless to say, the bike runs FAST. handles SHARP and vibrates a LITTLE.
