Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
From a reliability point of view, I think it's kind of a mixed bag, most are enjoying though some have tough luck, let me be honest here. I would suggest preventative maintenance would lead to good ownership terms with this motorcycle. I will "stress" that don't take the bike lightly be it power or be it reliability, the bike can give you thrill and drill you on both equations.Originally posted by rakshit rana View PostWill do that.
Btw, Has anyone done more than 50-60K kms on duke 390?
I highly doubt duke for long term reliability.
As I commute around 3K Kms every month.
Petty uses do get to the nerves at times, coupled with dodgy service centers, but put in a little extra puppy love, she'll be purring like a kitten.
I would love to know was your coil really at fault here. Though it might genuinely be the case that the coil might have gone kaput, I still hunch it has to do with the HT cables. Did you ask the as an option to change the HT coil cable?Originally posted by rick_7428 View PostHello Guys, yesterday my 390 got stalled while heading to office. Initially it started with rpm fluctuating from 1.5 to 4 erratically without me touching the throttle, then it started to misfire at low speeds and eventually use to shutoff completely. It use to start again for few kms then again cuts off, managed somehow to reach Ktm SVC gate and there onwards it totally failed to start, luckily had to push only for few meters :P
Cause of problem was busted Ignition Coil.
When I asked the mech is it normal to have ignition coil going kaput this early? He said when it comes to electronics cant guarantee anything..
My duke has done 31k kms and 3 years old.
I had experienced the fluctuating RPM two times before this few weeks back as it stopped immediately I was never bothered to check, so if anyone is facing problem with some misfires do get your Ignition Coil checked.
@psr sir, resistance measurement, would love to hear your thoughts sir.
Cheers!

The girl said, 'NO!'
And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
To be honest i had never seen this coil before, so out of general curiosity i did ask him whether replacing just the cable would do it or not? Then he showed end of wire where it was kinda burnt and was crumbling on pressure. The connecting part of the coil where the wire was connected also appeared blackish so just to be on safer side when he suggested to replace it i went ahead with it as i am also due for my ride in few days.Originally posted by B7ACKTHORN View Post

Yeah it is true i hasted the decision to replace it may be because of fear of getting stuck somewhere.. if i had even a lil bit of your knowledge that you posses i am sure i would have a fun grilling session of questions with him

Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
Is it necessary to replace brake fluid once in two years as mentioned in the manual? My bike has completed three years and ~15k kilometers but I have not bothered replacing it as I have no issues with respect to brake bite, lever feel, effectiveness, etc.
My worry is sub-standard workmanship will screw up brake feel and bite. Also, availability of special tools is suspect in ASCs. Kasturba road doesnt have them.
Is there a possibility of degradation of brake fluid over time? If yes, how? Is it not a sealed system?A lone amateur built the ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic...

Wish for a new Honda? That's quite a statement, sometimes I wish for the 390, because of the pickup and high speed capability but yes the quality of spares, engine life seems better with Honda, but I'm honestly excited by the new 390, coming to the CBR, HMSI have interest only in commuters and scooters.I don't see the 250rr or 300r or the 500r coming to India anytime soon.Originally posted by Legend Racer View Post35000 kms done.
stock brake pads replaced now.
stock clutch going strong.
rear suspension changed once.
front suspension seals and oil replaced once.
accelerator and clutch cable replaced once.
shims replaced twice.
meter console replaced once.
conset replaced twice.
engine and exhaust sounds more bass... mileage as before, 30-31 average. pick up as before, takes off after 6-7k rpm. im not in love with this bike, because of its harsh nature, but i do like it. wish for a honda... or hope new 390 is better. is twin coming up or is it new 390?

A brake bleed and refill doesn't really require these fancy tools. Just the right size spanner, screw driver, hose+bottle(to collect the bled fluid)Originally posted by NitinGirish View PostIs it necessary to replace brake fluid once in two years as mentioned in the manual? And yes, the fluid degrades over time and it's better to replace it every two years. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, so over time it can cause rust/corrosion in the master cylinder/caliper.
It takes less than 30 mins to do a complete bleed/refill (make sure new fluid is being added at the master cylinder as it's being bled from below, and let some of the new fluid also bleed out) , plus it's not expensive (should be around 300~400 including fluid and labor).
Even most local mechanic's can do it, you can buy couple of 250ml dot 4 fluid for around 120 bucks each and that should more than suffice for bleed and refill.

Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
If one read this thread, almost everybody complains of braking performance once the brakes are groped and molested by service center monkeys. That is the reason I am apprehensive about this. I think the filler device is good to have to avoid any air bubbles/air-lock.
That is my biggest worry. Besides, spilling the brake fluid and damaging the paint.
But I guess I'll take leap of faith and get this done.A lone amateur built the ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic...

Brake fluid replacement is a easy DIY. There are very good guide here in xbhp. 10 mins job for each caliper. You need a assistant though. and don't overfill if your pads are worn.Originally posted by NitinGirish View Postonce the brakes are groped and molested by service center monkeys.

If you are doing the registration thru the dealer agent, then some paperwork will be with them to do the registration.Originally posted by bhanubond View Posti am buying bike first time. i am going to take delivery of Duke 390 tomorrow (9-11-2016). what are related documents i should verify when taking bike.what are warranty issues i need to talk to dealer.how to know bike is delivered to dealer in recent time.
The other documents that you should receive are:
1. Invoice
2. Owner's manual duly filled with chassis-engine no.-date of purchase-stamp (also battery info and the emissions sticker)
3. Insurance copy
4. TR - sometimes provided immediately or the next day.
To check the month/year of manufacture refer this pic below (the vin aka chassis/frame number is on the steering stem i.e. right side near the coolant tank)
8th character is month and 10th character is year.
You can expect to get a Oct/2016 bike.
And remember to check if they fix the rear view mirrors and the front mudflap on mudguard. These are free and no need to pay for any 'accessories' (some unscrupulous dealers try to charge extra).
The warranty is standard (2yr/30k km whichever earlier), and you don't have to 'discuss' anything with them. If you have any specific question (w.r.t any specific part) go ahead and ask them (or us for clarification).
btw, which dealer in Hyderabad are you buying it from?Last edited by s1d; 11-08-2016, 01:43 PM.
