  • Re: Benelli TNT 300 Ownership Experience

I just got home after some adjustment and thought I'd share my findings if it may help someone here. So I set the screen lower on the black Benelli wind deflector thingy that's behind the instrument cluster. I also made the screen more vertical. Previously it was higher but was tipped back towards me.

I found that both settings take the wind off my chest at 70-90kmph but don't seem to do much for my helmet turbulence.

If I duck down very slightly, still looking above the screen, not through it, the helmet noise and turbulence is reduced drastically. At this stage I'll attempt to mount the screen higher on the factory deflector and also in a very vertical position.

If all else fails, I may see about a different screen. Something like this that's about 6 inches taller.

The new one is also a Puig universal fit.

Edit. Don't use the factory hardware supplied with the Puig Windscreen. Actually, I wouldn't recommend this screen, although I haven't looked at alternatives yet.

Day three of screen testing. It would appear that a true touring windscreen this is not. At best it will deflect the wind off of my chest, but never be able to send air over my helmet like on an adventure touring screen that comes on a touring machine with a more solid mount.

Speaking of mounts, these plastic mounts confirmed a suspicion of mine. They're garbage. With only two places to attach to the handlebar and being made of soft plastic, I found that that left side clamp is already failing after adjusting the screen 4 times. On the inside you see that the nut is captive by the plastic clamp. Plastic is the problem here. The nut is frozen on the bolt and the plastic captive housing is stripped, not holding the nut securely any more. Annoyance. I'll use a screwdriver to hold the nut securely and hopefully will fasten the screen down one last time for the time being. Very disappointed with the plastic construction of this piece. It would have been much smarter to simply leave the nut exposed for a box-ended wrench. Perhaps I'll send a note to Puig.

So I attempted to remove the clamps and this is the result. The nuts were locked on, to the point where they absolutely would not let go. I dug one nut out and put the open end of a wrench on it. Even after a tremendous amount of torque the nut would not let go. I ended up cutting the clamp at the hinge and driving out the connecting pin. This took some time. After that, I looked at the other bolt on the the clamp that was showing signs of the same issue and I went straight for the hinge instead of playing around with the nut like on the first one. Before calling it a night, I cut the nut completely free, put a box end on it and gave it a final go on the garage floor just to see how much torque it would have taken to break the nut loose. Apparently it wasn't going to let go no matter what. The bolt itself twisted and then snapped.

I would chalk this up to the nylon liners inside of the nuts that act as locking mechanisms. It would be the equivalent of putting red threadlocker on the nut. It's ridiculous, and completely unnecessary. For those of you out there thinking that it was possibly due to over-tightening I can honestly say that it was not the issue. I've been working on cars and motorcycles for over 15 years, which includes building engines. My garage is equipped with all types of torque wrenches and the like and I'm a very adept mechanic. I am certain that I did not over-tighten these.

If I were to install this again with brand new parts, I would switch out the nylon lined lock-nuts for standard stainless ones as well as cut the nylon clamps to fully expose the nut so that a wrench would fit on it instead of this captive-in-the-plastic style. Looks like I'll be going screenless until I find another solution.

Sorry to hear about what happened.

I bought mine from Revzilla when I was in the US.

I have been using it for almost 6 months and its been great. Everything is stock (clamps, nuts etc).

The nut sometimes comes out loose because of vibrations but it happens once in every 3-4 months.

I recently carried out a 3200 kilometers ride and it was extremely helpful.

That's ODD. I bought it off FC Moto and got metal clamps with plastic covers. This clamp looks all plastic and wasn't what was supplied with mine. The stock Puig mounts are all metal.

Hey look at that! Those mounts are completely different than the ones that came with my Puig screen.

            Yep. Mine are 100% plastic.

Thanks. Well, it's a learning experience, right?

So it looks like there are two versions of mounting hardware that this screen is sold with. Do you have the metal version or the plastic version like mine?

Plastic mounts will not withstand the pressure from wind blast at high speeds. As far as I know these mounts are available separately. Let me look up if I can find my order details.

The same one posted above by Binil but bought them from Revzilla.

Absolutely. I've had bikes that come with factory screens, but this is my first of this type. From the reviews it seemed like it was a quality working product so I figured I would give it a try.

Yes, I got it delivered to UK, to my cousins place. He hand carried it to India for me. Doing this saved me around 40% of the cost.

And again lube’d my chain @1850kms with the help of a KTM mechanic. He is a professional guy, and does the job well with motul c1 & c2. He says wurth lubr are good but will attract dirt to the chain. Totally satisfied with his work, since there is no SVC in my city.
Enjoyed the revvs up of 10k and the rpm limiter note is the peak of all. Having a good time with my buddy!
