Gentlemen, Here is the deal with the R3 odomoeter. It CAN be disconnected by a mechanic at a Yamaha SVC and reconnected. The catch - once reconnected it will show error.
How do I know? I made some good acquaintance with a person who sells SBKs (R1s) for Yamaha at a dealership in Hyderabad and asked him the question. How do I know you are not selling me a screwed up bike with odo disconnected?
His simple response was - we cannot disconnect the odo on this bike saar. It will show error once re-connected. Same with all Yamaha SBKs. He added, No one touches these bikes sir. Expensive they are. 4 lakh kaa gaadi ko koi touch karta kyaa? Superbike hai sir ye.

There are only a few showrooms across India selling R3s. There is only ONE mechanic per showroom who is trained on working with a R3. There is no one else who iis going to touch the bike in the showroom or in the godown. Its too expensive to screw up.
Compare it to a KTM and Ninja, all KTM SVCs service Ninjas. All KTM mechanics can and do work on Ninjas. Odometer disconnect, reconnect and all that - you get the drift!

R3 is the first BIG bike Yamaha has started selling in India that is available for display, that is available for discussions (have never seen a R1 thread on xBHP that is 50+ pages long) and is available (if you are lucky) for a TR!
I am sure Yamaha is not going to screw this one up - especially when it is trying to get a foothold in the market.

Rs 777/- 3 year extended warranty?

As far as I know, there is no extended warranty offered on the R3. I looked at a sales brochure for all Yamaha models - there were extended warranty options available for all except R3.
And if I am not wrong INR 777 for a 3 year extension is quite cheap (which makes me even more doubtful).

Frankly speaking I don't give a damn if the R3 has sold '0' units(even though I know that's false data) or if the bike did or did not win the OD bike of the year award. What I do know and care about is that I am having a gala time riding this machine and it never fails to amaze me with it's capabilities. It is a very capable machine that has won hearts worldwide. (I am not a Yamaha Fanboy)

P.S For xBhp people taking TRs of Odo disconnected bikes : Please DO NOT take such test rides. Even if you do, do not rip the bike like you stole it. At least we xBhp members are responsible and sensible enough to avoid such unethical practices. What if the person who buys the abused bike is a fellow xBhpian? What if it were you in his/her place. It's easy to rant about wrong things but very tempting to sample those things for ourselves.

Well the showroom manager reasons saying odo reading is high because it gets tested both outside and here in India its same everywhere. They even have a black unit but its at go-down . Sadly they were not very responsive i had to push them for details they don't even know where the chassis engine numbers are

        Sahil

There is no extended warranty for R3 [at least as per my knowledge]

if the showroom ready to give Discount of min 50,000/- to 80,000/- on demo bike , then you can try. BUT again spending laks of rupees on bike that is a Demo bike doesn't make sense unless you really don;t have enough money

I think the odo wire can be removed and resinserted back with ease by Yamaha mechanics. In the morning of PDI the odo was working and while evening at time of delivery it was not working. When i pointed out,it took approx 3 mins for the mechanic to fix it.He told he removed odo as the bike was being tested and moved inside premises by them so he removed the odo( some BS) . I asked him bro are you selling me some demo bike??He said "no sir, believe us we won't do any such thing." BTW I know the demo bike had lots of scratches ,my bike doesn't have them.Hopefully my bike is a virgin :P

.. And guess what? I came to know that these 10 bikes are not CKD assembled BUT are direct CBUs. They mentioned next shipment onwards the bikes would be assembled in CKD plants in India. I instantly made up my mind .. I have to get myself a CBU unit. I applied for a loan and spent 5 sleepless nights waiting for the truck to arrive. Factory shop offered me the actual price 3lac 75.
What the what! You got a CBU R3 for the same price of a CKD?Are you sure this is correct? I mean how could they pass the tax on CBU and sell at CKD prices? I feel it was assembled at another place and then transported to your city.

Anyways congratulations are in order! I have the same color. Welcome to the gang!

Haha... thanks a lot..!! Well the information I received from the factory shop is .. the CKD units will be available Jan 2016 on wards.. and there is no price difference between the CBU and the CKD.. CKDs however will be much more feasible for the company to provide at the same price thanks to the cost cutting. Hence Factory is strictly NOT allowed to offer test rides on the CBU units.

Congrats Abhishek.Take the CBU logic with a pinch of salt. Not possible at all.Indian Government would not let go off of taxes so easily. And yes you are right the ODO started moving by 0.1,0.2... (even when manually pushed around the SVC),the moment the Yamaha mechanic put back the odo wire in my case.

Well said, it is better that dealers would not allow to give test rides and sell the same bike to some guy whose hard earned money is spent on spoilt bike. There is a video by an Indian guy in Hyderabad I think who took R3 for a test drive and filled just around for 100/200rs petrol and ripped the bike. And in the next video he puts it in neutral and showing us exhaust sound. I hope they will not sell such bike to customers.

                            Note: Long post

                            TL;DR:
Bought the bike, showroom that providing service was Orion motors, I am NEVER returning to Orion Motors, be it for service or purchase or anything at all. NEVER.

Well, so took the delivery of R3. In the timeless black color, you can never go wrong with Black.
Took delivery from Orion motors, Koramangala(Opp. Forum Mall)
Now this comes with a very elaborate story with nothing but bad experiences.
Firstly, most of the Yamaha showrooms visited never gave the feeling they actually wanted to sell the bike. Was very disappointing to see, in contrast any body would go with he Kawasaki eyes closed, but in this case it was the budget that had the last word, hence got stuck with dealing with the enthusiasm-less guys.

Initially I thought the booking could be done from Hebbal, they did have the bike in stock too, but decided against it when i found that Orion has a bike in stock too, and could do a one day delivery scheme once payment is all done and dusted and most of all, it was very much closer to my residence(ITPL) and work place (BTM), the urgency because the bike was to be ready after first service by Christmas weekend, well i'm guessing no explanation is needed for that.

Now to start with what would be a series of horrible experience, even though it all happened in about 24hrs from the first to last experience.

To put it in a nutshell,

                            Booking experience:

Before visiting the showroom , there was a elaborate discussion with the sales manager there, who in all essence gave all necessary information and did manage to sound friendly too, which is what made the decision of going with Orion binding. So i went the following day to book the bike, walked in at about 11.00 and asked for the sales manager, i was told he is on leave(ok, fine , people do get unwell or sick, I'm cool with that).
I was not asked how i could be helped or anything, had to ask them if they could point me whom i could discuss with about booking an R3. After about 5-10 mins a guy comes, and explains stuff to me, apart from the delay he did tell me everything neatly. and I went and chose the bike , took pics of the frame number and all the regular mumbo jumbo was done with. Payment and such was taken care off and delivery was promised for 6pm the next day.

                            Delivery Experience :

I did make sure that they did the RTO registration and everything in time, by doing frequent calls to keep tabs on the status. So by 5.30pm i reach the showroom, where @Ivin was waiting for me , just in case to speed up the process. I reach the showroom and they bike is not ready, it is moved to the basement stating PDI, i had to wait for a long time for anyone to inform me where the bike was and what the status was, we then finally insisted that we see the bike first , at that moment the bike is bought up from the basement, but what was most appalling to us was the way the bike was handled, full of sudden throttle application, with utter carelessness, many times just narrowly missing hitting the walls (the whole showroom is a very narrow place with almost no proper room to handle bikes with ease), apparently the bike was going to be washed and waxed, which was through another small passage barely wide enough o fit the bike, the way he took with almost the exhaust and underbelly hitting the concrete raised platform. All this happened in front of our eyes(me, Ivin and the guy who took care of the delivery). We immediately pointed out our concern to him on the way the bike is being handled, NOW is where all the unbelievable stupidity charade starts , the guy responds telling, "Sir, that is our main mechanic, he know how to handle bikes, you do not need to worry", it was as though being careless with someone else's property is ok, because he is a experienced mechanic, which is a absolute hoot , which you will get to know in a short time.

So the bike is gone for washing and stuff, we go in and are asked to sit in the waiting area, a dark corner of the showroom with no light and where their extra stuff is dumped. (So much for a premium experience). We then insisted that we be given the rest of the bike documents and owners manual and service book, and as expected we were given the "Yes sure, it is being arranged" as though it was a recorded message being played.
Time passes and its almost an hour later, still no bike, no sign of documents or the sales guy who pitched the sale to me. Mind you till this time the sales manager to whom i talked to on the phone has not bothered to talk to me yet.
Now finally its time for showroom to shut down, everything is happening in full swing, oh, but the bike delivery is not a priority at all, the bike is still not anywhere to be seen.

So after what i think is 7.30 or so , the bike is bought out and kept on the footpath(yeah, footpath , with the broken concrete slabs which is struggling to hold strong even the weight of people walking over it.). At this point we find that the mirrors and number plates have not been fixed yet. But then one guy comes along and starts installing the mirrors and front number plate. So we think, ok , at-least we did not have to ask for it. So again 10 min pass and another guy comes out, with a backpack and starts playing with the key, we look and then get to know he is the mech who has come to "educate" us about the bike. So all the usual this is this, that is that goes about and then he cranks up the bike, explains the dash and now suddenly, he revs the bike up-to the rev-limiter, right in front of us and says to us "Sir, now you saw a white light on the dash, this is the rev-limiter/ shifter indicator". And we were there like WTF just happened, then the extremely "knowledgeable" mechanic senses our expression and cleverly deducts that it we did not quite get what he said over the loud exhaust sound and proceeds to do it another time , at which point of time I hold the throttle and let him to let go, now he is confused, to which we explain "Please saar, we know how it works".
But its not over, now we get to hear the infinite wisdom from his mouth "Saar, don't worry, there is no problem if you hit the limiter on neutral, it is only problem if you do it while riding, so no issues saar" and again proceeds to rev the bike, which we did not allow. And then we asked him to leave , and we were left to recover from the thing that just happened.

Now the showroom is almost closed, and we still don't have the owners manual. We ask the guy there and he says "yes sir, its ready". We go in to have a look and guess what, they do not know where the service and owners manual is kept and is frantically searching for in from a big pile of books meant for other models, about 10 mins later they find one and give. So now we think the ridiculous ordeal is over. But wait, not yet. The rear number plate is missing.
So we run around to get hold of the sales guy and ask him , to which he says "Saar, rear number plate is not provided by us, it doesn't come with it". At this point Ivin explains about how the rear plates should be provided if nothing else at-least as an accessory to which we are ready to pay, and in response we get this guy shouting at us telling that they do not have to provide it and they do not have a number plate for the vehicle.

I intervene and ask him to get what he has and i will pay for it, honestly i just wanted to be out of there with the bike and have nothing to do with them from that point of time. and finally he brings a number plate which doesn't fit , but i take it nonetheless , I tell him thank you very much for your service, i shall retrofit the plates or whatever, but its time for me to go.

So, that about sums up the booking to buying experience from Orion motors, I believe that this might serve as what to expect if at all you are to get a bike from them.

Such a shame, Yamaha offers such a wonderful product and then give it to the hands of these kind of people to serve to the customers. Such a shame.

Oh, although i was happy to not that the bike had only 2kms on the ODO at the point of delivery. At least it was not taken for a joy ride or anything(i think)

                            Well, hope this helps.

P.S: I do intend to send across a detailed mail to Yamaha Customer Care about this, let's see how they respond.
