• Re: Honda CB Hornet 160R Owners Experiences

Done 4000km in 6 months.Had my 2nd service done. The gear box & engine both have smoothened quite a bit.The gear box particularly has become very smooth.
Did two Haldia-Kolkata trips---280 kms each.Best cruising speed range is 85-95 kmph.I am using Motul 10w30 5100 oil. Sticking to my previously said 2 worst weaknesses of this bike-----headlight & power. If you are a regular highway user don't consider this bike. It's a fantastic choice as a city bike.Honda should upgrade this bike with
1)more power with say 180 cc & 17-18 bhp.
2)FI
3)A brighter 60 watt DC headlight.
4)better switch gear.
5)A true top speed of 120 kmph.

These at an on road price of 110000(I bought my hornet for 99000)will make it really a compelling buy.

If they had developed an all new platform, i guess they would not have even thought of bringing back the Uni 150 considering that it would cannibalise the sales of the Uni 160, leading to lesser margins (after all Honda is expert at maintaining profit margin.

Yeah !! I got similar stupid replies too. When i pointed out that there was a 'clank-clank' sound coming from the engine the service manager told me that it is due to 'dust somewhere in the engine' , upon which i asked him to clear the 'dust'. He was like .
This 162.7cc engine was lifted from the Brazilian NXR160 Bros which was a different platform from the 149cc engine. This same 162.7cc engine has been bored to 184cc on the Chinese market specific CB190R. The unicorn 160 didn't have such widespread issues as the Hornet though.

One thing I can say though. This engine runs best on tappets slightly on the looser side. Slight tappet noise is fine. If you're hearing clanking sounds for a few seconds when cold starting, it's probably because the strainer and the centrifugal filter haven't been cleaned in the 1st service.

My advice - Avoid giving the bike to Haiku Honda in Pai Layout and Old Airport Road. They screwed up my unicorn 160 so badly I couldn't fix the issues and sold it.

You seem to be right. Thanks for correcting me. The 160 seems to be different from the 150 engine. The variant on the hornet has a higher compression ratio and revs harder to put out the additional performance figures. I believe, the small niggles can be sorted out by Honda (of course poor pick up in 1st and 2nd will be a hitch though). The service centers too are happy cleaning and greasing activas rather than applying their mind on bikes (unless you are a CBR 650 owner ).

Honda seems to have its strategy goofed up. At first they introduced the Uni 160 (a different platform, which is not much of a an upgrade over the 150), introduced the Hornet 160, withdrew the 150 and reintroduced the 150. In the process they have cannibalized the sales of the 160 (sales of the uni 160 are in triple digits in the last 3 months). IMO they should have gone for a 190, to achieve a differentiation.

The noise which i referred to arises in all gears. Hope the SC will sort it out this time.

I get my vehicle serviced at Silicon Honda Basvanagudi. Have heard negative reviews about Haiku.

I even consulted the ASC guys, they did a test ride and said it was carburetor af ratio need a tune and they did some tuning but the bike is in same condition. Do help me out figure out this issue. Is it becz of defect in carburetor or engine !??

My bike has got a bit more smooth than what it was at 1000kms. However there is an irritating 'claaang claaang' noise from the engine (tappets/balancer i think). I assume it will get better with clocking on the odo (i rode 5 hornets, and hence my guess ). BTW do not expect it to be as smooth as the unicorn 150. . That assurance was given by the service center itself

I have different issue. When the engine gets warm or heated up.. the engine gets rough. I can feel it when i rev the engine in neutral gear. I guess the carburetor is a defective one.

That's a problem may of us have , even I had same experience but my engine would become so rough that it used to feel like a old bike not serviced for years. Viberation would also show up . They changed crankshaft and piston cylinder after that it's better now but .. I feel the top speed and pickup took hit .

Can anyone help me please. I have already booked my hornet 160r sports red. Should I go for special edition version? Or does sports red looks good?

Well this is subject of individual perspective.

My suggestion is never buy special edition bikes(any bikes), when the special thing only limites to colour and graphics, because in future, finding the same colour exteriors parts will be a pain.

Yeah bro. Same problem here.. the asc guys dont accept the fact that the is rough after riding few km and it is worst in long run i.e 30km. This guys are worst. They dont know anything about motorcycle. Useless service.

what have you have now is a new engine.
Do the break-in like a new bike.

Cheers.

For me bike kept getting worse with passing day . They changed almost everything in trial and error. I have uploaded full list of parts changed on YouTube .. Search my name Abhik Singh . You will get an idea what I went through.
