  • Re: Honda CB Hornet 160R Owners Experiences

Hi I had done 6000km on my Hornet 160R

Till second service i had used FS oil the bike was very good.

During second service the service center guys changed to mineral oil with out intimating me.

    My observations with mineral oil

I had a long drive about 800kms 400 + 400 its not back to back about 20 days gap between each.

During the journey i felt the harshness of engine it was heating very soon.

The bike started vibrating at high speeds(75 - 95) and some unknow sounds which was irritating, which was not observed with FS.

    The gear change was painful.

After overall 1000 km of drive with mineral oil i decided again to change to Honda FS oil.

After changing to Honda FS, again i had 400 km long drive which was very smooth there was no heating, no vibration even at 80 and 90 km speed.

Gear change became smooth now. Pick up is good and am getting 50 - 52 kmpl.

I clean my bike and chain monthly twice with diesel and apply motul lube spray.

Can anyone tell me is it possible if so how can I remove.
And is it ok if I do this.
      Thanks in advance.
Usually it requires when chain is too dirty to clean.
      If you use chain cleaner:
      1. [*=1](spray --> leave for 10min --> clean) x2

[*=1]Jet waterwash the chain while wheel is roating.

It's enough to clean the chain thoroughly.

Surprised to know the drum brake version has 3 wheel bearings (same size) in the rear wheel alloy. I wonder how one can re-grease the inner RHS bearing without removing it. Am not counting the sprocket bearing. @accuengineer Sir ji, any explanation for this unusual set-up? CBS/Disc brake version has only two like other bikes.

I thought it was an error in the catalogue, but one can see the 4 bearings (3 in wheel, 1 in sprocket) in one of the youtube video.

          Hai

Normally it is 2 bearing in wheel and 1 in sprocket for bikes with mechanical back brakes. But Honda has added 3 bearings in the wheel in hornet. Maybe their R&D team would have felt the need for this design. It is purely based on the R&D teams decision to put one or 2 bearings. Or it might be a overkill but adding 1 more bearing. But we would not know the reason behind the extra bearing until we are a part of Honda R&D team.

It is still a mystery to me not able to figure out the reason for the extra bearing.

          Cheers

Thank you for the reply Mathews! I thought it would have some reason like the fork pinch bolt, but like you said this seems to be model specific requirement done after some extensive testing by the R&D. Looks like the only way to re-grease the inner bearing is by removing it (which would mostly spoil it). Dan's online motorcycle repair course says three bearings at rear wheel were common in some old bikes. It's a beautiful site - at least to learn something for people like me.

Is there any hornet riders group in Mumbai? Or some group which allows all kind of bikes in same cc segment

                I done my first service,

really unsatisfied with service. engine sound changed to different now. not so comfortable sound, like something struck and engine hitting something like sound.when starting bike it's not moving had to apply more rev, and bike stooping when slowed down in traffic more frequently than before. what should i do ? and what is the minimum rpm to set for not stopping bike ? like that small nob above engine to change ? asked service person to fit indicator buzzer and that buzzer sound something different than other normal buzzers. should i ask him to change ?

                  Hi, All

My hornet recently completed 14000 Km. I'm doing servicing by myself after 3rd servicing. Between free services also i use to check bike at 4000 Km interval.
So just completed servicing my bike.

Hornet is quite easy to service at home if you have enough tools. I changed the air filter, rear brake shoe, and Oil.
For 14000 km service, i cleaned the carburetor throttle body as well with 3M carb and choke cleaner. It has removed knocking of engine at lower rpm in traffic.
Rear brake shoe is quit difficult to replace as you have to remove entire rear wheel to access it. Whereas front disc brake is very easy to clean. I always clean my brakes with brake cleaner like STP brake cleaner. It cleans the brake assembly thoroughly and dries fast. I then lubricate brake pad connector with silicon lubricant. Oil change is very easy as you have to only remove oil nut and replace washer every alternate fill. I spray WD 40 wherever i feel it may rust, it acts a protectant lubricant as well for all nuts. After all done i spray, Nulon spray grease all over joints. Its non sticky, thin and doesn't accumulate dust. The battery connector of hornet are not covered by plastic so i spray Abron battery protect spray. It reduces oxidation at point of contact and increases battery life.

Air filter is simple replacement and cant do much. Spark plug also is cleaned by bronze brush.

Chain cleaning and tightening i do every 1500 Km, as i drive in traffic most of times. I clean chain by kerosene and lube by Yamaha chain lube, Yamaha chain lube is little thicker than motul. Once sprayed you can see layer on chain and it stays longer. After cleaning and lubing is spray Armour all tire and rim clean, its foam spray based cleaner which removes all grit, dirt and oil stains from rim also tire shines like new for 2-3 weeks

All this process takes about 2 hrs. Washing i do at local garage as i don't have power wash.

Till now my bike gives about 47 to 51 kmpl. I'm not harsh driver and drive in city mostly. Above that is use Liqui moly benzine additive, its a amazing product. You just need 20 ml of it for 5 liter alternate fill. It smooths acceleration and engine sound. I recommend everyone to try it aleast one. One bottle of it has lasted to me about a year and more.

Hey brother I'm thinking about going DIY after my last free remaining service...
Can you please give instructions on how to clean carburetor... I have no clue... We need to remove it then spray.? But before that how do we stop the petrol from coming to carburetor? Can you please elaborate ?
I don't know much about servicing except Channing oil?

You need to set idle rpm as per need. Nothing specific. Earlier my warm engine idle was 1500rpm but recently I changed to 1000-1200 and it worked very well.
Just set your idle a bit higher. Always warmup at least for 30 sec in morning. You can start and engage choke for warm up.
I have also felt the sound being harsh after servicing. But for few days only.
Is "engine hitting something" loose tappet? please confirm. Not to worry about it. A little loose tappet is fine.
Also, after servicing, you can get thing fixed without being charged within 1-2 weeks.

The idle knob in hornet is just other side of pulsar as shown in video. Just where the Kick ends in
Clockwise increases the idle. Keep adjusting as required.

I don't see any thread by Hornet user in The Tourer section. So I guess, less people are touring.

Also, the user on xbhp who get issues with bike post more. In ownership, mostly people seeks for issue resolution.
If you see initially in this thread lots of users were posting issues and looking for solution.

But, still Gixxer users are more than Hornet on or off Xbhp and older bike.

That's true. Have seen very few travelogue and tourers on hornet compared to Gixxer, FZ. I guess most of the people upgraded to Hornet use it in city, but again hornet city performance is bad. As far as I've seen, youngsters ride Hornet due to looks and appeal. So the ratio of tourers is much lesser.

No wonder FZ thread is more active.
Exactly! First of all hornet is over priced in its segment. FZ25 is super bang for the buck for every category.
I've ridden FZ25 on highway and oh boy, bike has linear torture curve! It's so enjoyable! [emoji16] it can reach speeds of 120 easily and do 110 all day long!
                                Ride hard, Ride safe! :D
