Not required to use high octane petrol. Just use normal petrol. High octane petrol is for the engines which have higher compression ratio ( ~ if it is more than 12:1). Hornet is 10:1 ratio. So no improvement (Power or performance or smoothness.... nothing) you will notice. Only loss in performance will be there. There is always a myth around people that speed petrol will be good for engines .... but not true.

I had this similar issue (kick start feels very free, as if we try kicking with clutch applied) 4 times till now. Once in somewhere around 3.5k km (Very early), then at around ~ 20k km and then recently around 25k km & then at ~38k km.

First two times, I did not know what to do, but tried tried kick start... selfstart.... but finally after a lot of struggle it started. Then during service I informed this issue, what they informed is possibility of compression leak .... due to accumulation of carbon in the valves. The remedy they told me was to switch of the engine and then pump 10 -12 times by kick starting and then switching ignition key "ON" and try again. it will start. It may help the compression to buildup. This advice worked for me in the 3rd time. In the 4th time I had to struggle a bit even with the method I just mentioned.

When this issue comes, it really gets frustrated, but then after a struggle for about 10-15 min. max it started again for me. Other than that I do not see major issues. Atleast to my opinion you do not have to worry at all. I have done nearly 39k km now. Overall I am satisfid with this bike.

Hello friends, Happy to post my experience after a very long gap.

I had purchased Hornet in feb 2016. I have nearly done 39k km in it. with few long drives (B'lore to Chennai and Kodaikanal). So far the experience is really good.

For every 5.5 to 5.9k km I used give it for service and oil change. Two times chain and sprocket replaced (1st time @ ~ 18k & 2nd time @ 36k), then two times air filter, rear disc pad was replaced and once the indicator switch module and gear lever spring was replaced. Except the last service @ 36k, every time I used the Mineral engine oil (Honda genuine). Last service without my confirmation the service guys had put the Honda throttle one (fully synthetic). Stock tyres are still running, the service guys told even the rear tyre can run for another 20-25k km. Overall I am happy with this bike. Service cost during free service, it was around Rs 400 and after that it was like ~ Rs 1100 on average. only when the parts were replaced (I think twice) the service cost went up to Rs ~3200.
Other than the compression leak issue which I had mentioned in the previous post today, one more issue I had faced regarding the Gear lever spring (I do not know what to call exactly). The issue was like, when I had to slow down the speed suddenly, I was not able to down shift the gear. It may either get stuck in 3rd or 2nd gear. Then one day permanently it got stuck between 2nd and 3rd gear while riding. It was at around ~ 22k km. I was able to switch only to 2nd or 3rd gear. Then the spring was replaced. After that till now I did not face that issue.

As far as the usage is concerned, only during long rides in highway comfortable speed is at max 85 kmph. This is the only limitation. (Atleast in my opinion the comfortable cruising speed should be like ~ 100) Above 85 kmph speed the vibrations are felt and feels like engine is stressed. Max speed I have touched is 116 kmph. Fuel economy is around 55 kmpl when I ride at 60 kmph or below. In highways @ 80-85 kmph, it gives FE of ~ 44-45 kmpl and @ > 90 or 100 kmph the FE was reduced to 36 kmpl.

One more thing I like to add is that ride is so comfortable, I did not have any back pain even after continuous non-stop ride for 3.5 hrs. Once I left Chennai at 3 am in the morning and reached my house in Hosur at 6.20 am (~ 312 km) and refreshed and went to office in Bangalore in another hour. No tiredness in body pain or back pain felt. Only the saddle became very sour because of the hard seat and no ventilation, I believe.

I was just reading through 250cc FZ 25 and then just visited this Hornet thread. Felt like sharing. Hope it helps someone. Thank you !

The seat on one of my friends bike has been damaged by cats. The top cover has been ripped apart and the foam has also been removed. What would be the cost of a new spare seat from honda?

dunno about cost from Honda but do consider checking from local seat shop.. they're generally cheaper

Most of compression loss are not serious issue. You won't get carbon accumulated in few thousand kms.
When you get this issue next time, just open the tank cover and close it after a few seconds and try start after 30 sec.
If that works then it just vapor lock issue.

There are many reasons why a bike/scooter will die and fail to start by the side of the road - once my Eterno had ignition coil failure, had no choice but to push it to nearby mechanic and get it replaced. Opening/closing tank lid will help vapor lock not compression loss due to stuck or bent valve. Unicorn 150 was infamous for this problem but interestingly Hero Honda Hunk/CBZs did not report much with this "stuck valve" problem.

Excess carbon deposits can cause a stuck valve. Usually a high speed (>70 kmph) run for a few minutes will help burn off such carbon. Also, it might be wise to use a carbon cleaner once every 3000 kms (Yamaha PEA carbon cleaner available in their SVCs) or every time we fill petrol (Servo Adon or Iftex - can be bought from pumps).

No need to panic mate, this is a Honda trait pertaining to CRF/CB engines of a particular era.

You momentarily loose compression and regain it after a while just like that. This was prominent with the Unicorn and Karizma as well.

The Pulsar's leak oil where as the Honda's leak compression, every engine has its unique trait as such.
