  • ABS Failure

I'm getting an ABS Failure Warning.

Everytime the bike is in motion for more than 15 mins, the red critical error lights up, and the speedo starts showing random speeds, even when stationary.

I took it to Kasturba Road SVC where they reflashed the firmware and attributed it to some vague residual coding error
after checking the battery voltages and running the diagnostics.

Since i had gone there in between office breaks, i could take the bike out only in the evening, and sure enough, 15 mins later, the error popped up again.
Has this happened with anybody else? Any idea what could be the issue? Is this some ABS sensor error?

Hey guys, just scrolling through the post, read about traction control stuff, just wanted to ask, has anybody noticed 'tc' indicator in tft console, yet? Its on the bottom left. Look closely you will find it. Seems like KTM is planning to offer TC in future.

TC is very much possible as TC uses the same data used in ABS but here rather than brake pressure it is used to control amount of throttle. Since the 2017 version already has ride by wire according to my knowledge TC can be provided as a software update.

But this will give us a very basic system. Instead of being predictive it will first detect the slide then it will take action. Which is definitely not the ideal case and is pretty much useless on powerful bikes.

For an advanced predictive system it needs to get data from engine(rpm, crankshaft position), tyre torque, tyre's coefficient of friction at different speeds, lean(roll, pitch and yaw) and all the data needs to be processed at real time, so naturally it will need a very powerful processor.

But as my friend used to say something is better than nothing also if you are not comfortable with it you can always turn it off(like... If the manufacturer allows that option).

          Hello all.

I wanted to know what all accessories does the 2017 duke come pre-installed with?

          Is Engine bash plate included?

They aren't accessories per se. The bikes come with mirrors, hand guards, and the saree guard which are installed at the dealer level, before delivering the bike to the owner, all included as part of MRP. There aren't specific accessories that you'd have to buy. But, you have those PowerParts like gel seat, adjustable levers, et cetera which you can purchase and install according to your taste.

            Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
            The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

            THE END

I wish you could inform that to the showroom folks.

Anyway according to my knowledge the 2017 Duke 390 model comes with adjustable levers, hand guards, saree guard and leg guard. I am pretty sure about these items. What I am not so sure about is the engine bash plate placed underneath the engine.

I am not talking about KTM Power Parts here.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

              Thanks for your reply. [emoji1]

There is a standard hard plastic bash plate fixed below engine which runs just a bit below the radiator and goes all the way below engine. It looks like it can take good hit.. But will definitely not take the major one. Hope this helps

Yes, it technically isn't a bash plate, it's just a belly pan aka wind deflector and yes that absolutely comes with the motorcycle. Though the older version of the 390 has a dedicated bash plate available from Indimotard, if my memory serves right, it's approximately 2000~ for the 390.

                  Cheers!

I don't expect the factory installed one to do anything rather I wanted to be sure that I was getting everything while taking delivery.

I might get a aftermarket one and indiamotard still have that plate for 2000, since both the new and the old bike has the same engine construction, the bash plate might fit the 2017 model just fine.

Thank you both for the information.

The coolant was reducing from max to min mark from the reservoir every 400 - 500 km. I used to check my engine oil from the small glass however could not infer that coolant was mixing with engine oil since the oil seemed like used engine oil (a slight golden color). I went to SVC and following was done in every visit.

                      1. First Visit - They changed my radiator. I could see a portion which was wet always hence i had my doubts on radiator. SVC took advantage of this situation and changed my radiator and made me pay for it without any diagnosis. They did not even check if coolant is mixing with engine oil.

I went for a ride for around 400 kms and again the coolant was again at min and decided to visit SVC again.

                      2. Second Visit - Mechanic told me that there was some issue with pressure cap due to dirt trapped. He has a device to check the pressure and inferred that the pressure was low and he has corrected that and now the issue should be fixed.

I went for a 400 km ride again and issue remains the same.

                      3. Before my third visit i made a complaint to KTM. Third Visit - This time I was taken up seriously. They checked the engine oil. Found traces of coolant. They replaced my water pump seals and gave back my bike.

As usual I took out my bike for a test ride and inferred that issue remains as it is.

                      4. Fourth Visit - I went to the SVC and gave my bike. They said they will have to check the head gasket and said that it will take some time. I left my bike in SVC. While they were working on my bike i thought let me do a uninformed visit to SVC. The next thing that I see my opened up engine. I was very angry since they told me that issue is only with head gasket and I see not just the head opened but engine below the head also opened up. On further inquiry they told me that they inspected head gasket and found it to be fine. The picture which I have posted has a marked area through which coolant flows through the side walls of engine. There is a liquid sealant which separates the coolant and engine block. And that sealant was not pasted properly by Robots in Factory was the explanation given to me by everyone including Karnataka ASM. I got my bike back after 4 days of work in SVC.

I went for a long ride after this. Around 700 km this time and looks stable now. What I got along with the fix was an additional tick tick sound which I am suspecting due to valve clearance issue. A shim adjustment / replacement will resolve this according to my knowledge hence not really worried now. Will take my bike to SVC to get my shim adjusted. But the actual coolant issue is fixed finallyyyyy.
I gave my bike to SVC again to check on the additional noise that is coming up. Shim adjustment did not help. Hence they are further checking the issue. Its been almost 5 working days today and SVC hasn't been able to eliminate the noise. They are working on bike based on trial and error method. First they changed the shims. Tested the bike. Then cam lobes and then valves. Now they say they are changing piston rings.

KTM your quality issues day by day is just getting worse. Nothing would have broke if things were right in the first place in this case coolant loss. Trying not to get frustrated and having a lot of patience to get things resolved is what we need with KTMs. I am hoping bike will be fine one day. Waiting for that day

I've had this issue (random speeds when moving, not when stationary iirc) on my D200. It was a faulty speedo sensor and had it replaced under warranty. Mine did not throw up the warning light since it doesn't have abs.
the svc should be able to connect the diag tool and check out the error code.. you could also see it for yourself. these are a bunch of lazy turds, you gotta push them to do their work

There are no 'accessories' with the dukes. Everything is included in the price. By everything i mean:
                        1. Saree guard, crash guard
                        2. rear mud guard
                        3. Belly pan (it doesn't have 'bash plate' just the bottom plastic cowl which is called the belly pan)
                        3. Rear view mirrors
                        4. front mudguard flap
                        5. Hand guards

items 3,4, (and even 5 i think) come is a separate box and are installed during delivery. if your svc is charging you extra for these, take the quotation and send it to [email protected] - politely demand an explanation for this overcharging by dealers. Some dealers add all sorts of 'charges' (handling charges, teflon coating, accessrories blah blah..) to make a quick extra buck

The accessories are stuff from the power parts catalogue.. which nobody buys anyway

I got it fixed the second time around at the SVC. The problem was a clogged up ABS sensor it seems. It wasn't throwing up any error codes so they didn't even check that first time. They cleaned everything including the cables and the issue was gone.

Getting your ABS sensor serviced for the second time, is that what I am inferring from your post? If yes, I reckon you do keep a tab on the sensor itself and Pulser Ring itself for any bends, nicks and what not. If you get random 0 when going at a good clip or if you've ever encountered a low battery warning on the console while riding, do check your stator coil and your battery. Failed stator coil leads to failed battery eventually

                            Cheers!

Got the sensor serviced once, but took two visits to the SVC to get it done. First time, they just flashed the software without even bothering to check out the ABS.

The problem seems to have been sorted now, haven't cropped up since. But yeah, gotta keep a tab on the sensor and the ABS ring...
