  • DO i need to replace all ?

I'm typing this with a broken heart! My last oil change was done at 25xxx odo. This past weekend, we Kerala xbhpians had a New Year G2G at Munnar hill station. It was a combination of offroading in the middle of forest and high speed cornering through the twisties. It was fun filled two days.

On the way back, after we climbed down from Munnar, the engine started making small knocking-kind of noise, just like that of loose tappet. I thought its just cos of the quick succession of down shift and upshifts combined with hard throttle on the way down the twisties. Called up a mech and he asked to check oil-level. I did, and it showed half way between the low and high mark of the dip stick. So I continued. Half way back to home, another guy suffered a bad puncture. Then I also noticed that the sound had increased a lot. We decided to stop over for the night (it was sunday late night).

On monday morning, took it to nearest TVS SVC, which was just 1km from where we stayed. They said its damage to crank. I was like.. WTH?? They drained the oil, and there was hardly some 100ml left, pitch black. (I've always had reasonable drain quantity, and mostly not even black!! ) That too at < 2k since last oil change. So the poured some oil, and started the engine. My heart broke at the scene that followed. The exhaust was full of smoke!! And those guys confirmed that piston rings, cylinder all are damaged.

They then said the engine needs to be opened up for assessing the extent of damage. Also, as they are sub-dealer they will need quite some time. The service manager there asked them to pour in brand new oil and to take it to my regular SVC and ask if it can be replaced under warranty. They poured 100ml extra oil (the normal TVS mineral oil) and asked me to ride slowly. It took us 3 hours to do 120km of super smooth roads.

Today I took it to my regular SVC. I skipped the fact about the smoke in exhaust, but mentioned the decrease in oil level. Now, their initial analysis is 'some problem with the head, need to open to see'. There are in for a big surprise when they open it up.

Current odo reading is 27135, 10th service as per booklet. Sincerely hoping the impeccable service records will help me getting it done under warranty. Looking back, now I'm glad I did all the services even though I wanted to kill everyone there after each service (it goes without saying their service sucks).

With a broken heart and a busted engine,
    Lijo

    Hi Bro...
Now i can understand what pain you have gone through. Mine is just 12000Kms on ODO.

Well my bike never kicked out smoke or on idling. It was only when i opened the throttle the ttiiiirrrrrr sound was coming as of loose tappet though it was coming from engine. Is there anything to get panick, i mean will the replacement give me the bike with the same power and pickup i am tennsed.....

IF its just the crank, nothing gonna change... and no run-in also after change.. yeah, thinking abt it,, there were few friends who had crank issues for no apparent reason.. maybe just a odd bad quality one made it into yours... happens all the time... dont worry too much... what you must be worried about is they getting cranky over u skipping the services and so denying warranty.. but since they said they will try, lets hope they do it... Cheer up.. and yeah.. 8k is too much for the crank replacement alone... crank comes within 3k (forgot exact amount)

      • Guys I dont know what to do,,I m feeling that as if I am turning the wrong screw for setting the idle RPM.....The screw for adjusting the idling rpm is the one which is near the petrol knob right which is like some kind of spring facing downwards....

whenever I am trying to set it near 1.2k also the whole handle starts to vibrate..the vibrations are not that much but still when I m in first gear and still holding the clutch in signals or in heavy traffic it is troublesome,,,,any solutions to this ,,,,

If i set the rpm to arounf 1k then the vibrations are almost nil...will it be any problem if i keep the idling rpm low around 1K???

in the hunt for DC conversion.. i came aceoss a mech. He says he would replace the current battery to a korean battery.. and add an extra coil...
by doing this he says the charging system of my bike will improve... and i won't have any probs. with my HID kit den on...
          Is he right??

Is there a problem with those engines or do they mix some additives to the petrol? The white smoke makes those bikes look like two-strokers! and what tyres do they use??

That is because those bike's are running with rich A/F mixture

                          • Replacement of Stock TVS Tyres

                            Dear XBHPians,

While taking turns on a wet concrete tarmac, the front tyre of my RTR tends to slip...Is it a generic problem of TVS stock tyres that is faced by all? Sometimes while driving even at a speed of 50 KMPH, the skidding of the tyres is noticeable. This is really scary especially during monsoons.

If need be for replacement of tyres, what are the possible alternates which I can opt for?

The stock tyres sucks,go for R15 front tyre MRF Zapper Y 80/90 17'' & for the rear Zapper C9Dazzler's rear tyre).

EDIT:Today, lubed the chain with TVS chain spray, oiled the throttle & clutch cables too.Did all the work myself at home.Putting the cables back again is a great task though.
