Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion
Mine too is covered with soot soon after fitting a new or clean plug . In my case it is because of constant low-rpm operation beacuse I have to do short-hop trips in busy and slow and stop-go city traffic all day ( below 30kmph
) . The plug may be having carbon like that , it does not matter unless the very tip where it fires gets blocked . I have not had to clean my plug in last 4000+ kms after I fitted the CR7HGP since firing tip is always clean and brown-white . I had a faulty plug-cap some months back , and after I have replaced it , the motor starts on first kick and never falters ( despite the carbon on the lower parts of the plug ) . Can you please post a close up/macro image of your plug tip ? I do not recommend altering the heat range of your plug ( cr6hsa ) unless you really know what you are doing . Another point to note is the fuel you get , adultrated or stale petrol shall also cause plug fouling .

Check your exhaust tip. If u find carbon deposit like this (click on the image)

And a wet carbon like this

then it means your bike is smoking and that carbon deposit in plug is due to burning engine oil. And if its 100% dry then no need to worry, then in it means that carbon deposit is due to rich mixture.
Also engine oil carbon deposit is thick & hard to peel of from the plug. and rich carbon is soft & therefore easy to clean because of its slight layer and also its bit shines in light compare to oil carbon deposit.| SOL 68s | Rynox Tornado Pro | Rynox Advento | Cramster TRG2 | Scoyco MC20 | Hero 5 and SJ6 |

paul.1911 I am afraid i have bad news , cleaned the exhaust and ran for 5km and this was the result
so it is confirmed that bike is smoking ?? In evening i will add spark plug`s pic too . The entire electrode and firing tip was sooty and was removed using sand paper.

Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion
You should have checked without cleaning. While cleaning it was wet or dry? because from the pic above it is looking dry, but on the other hand that is too much in quantity in just 5 kms. Drive for more hundreds of kms then check again. But as far i can predict your bike is smoking a bit because u used sand paper to clean plug which indicates hard carbon. Also decrease in 200 ml of oil indicates smoking.
What is the mileage you are getting? Did u get wet plug threads??Last edited by paul.1911; 06-07-2013, 07:23 PM.| SOL 68s | Rynox Tornado Pro | Rynox Advento | Cramster TRG2 | Scoyco MC20 | Hero 5 and SJ6 |

@ rohit- Your mixture is rich. Nothing to worry your rings are not requiring replacement. Just open the head, clean the head, polish valves, change valve oil seal, clean carb, change air filter re-tune the carb and your bike is ready to run another 40k, the oil consumption is because of busted valve oil seal and the carbon is because of rich mixture combined with oil leakage, so get all the above work done and bike will run like new. 41K and thinking of overhaul, man 41k is like a walk in park for splendor series engine.
@all- The new part number for our splendor series is CR6HSA, and i am presently using it, superb plug and better than NGK7HSA as it doesn't foul.Photo of my joy- http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/854067-post963.html-3.88 lac km cont....Ownership review of my joy- http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/832255-post608.html- slowly updating as and when getting time. sibun , you have given some good news to me
, Here are the pics of plug . Carb has not been touched in 25K kms . so i think i should first buy consumable o-rings then proceed with opening it
As you can see the surface is been cleaned using cloth but cleaning the tip required sandpaper. I cleaned the plug hole with kero and applied bit of oil in threads now plug just slides in
Also please suggest a front tyre , driving condition in 70% city 30% offroad , i am looking at cheap and effective tyre , mine is a spoke model .
Man i must say one thing its 40K and the pull in this bike makes Xtreme feel puny , although mine`s clutch is gone but still the low end performance is ultimate when compared to Xtreme. Just a whiff of throttle and it pulls whatever the load i put on it . I love this bike its just fantastic

Did you see any signs of oil on the top thread ?
How are you removing/installing the plug ? How did the plug hex nut get damaged ?
Check the resistance of the plug cap also.
Wait.. did you wash the plug with kero before taking this picture ? Then the color of the insulator has changed as the insulator turns dark grey as soon as it is dipped in kerosene.
sibun
Nothing beats your experience of diagnosing problems.
NGKC6HSA is a hotter plug , how is the engine performing on highway speeds ? NGKCR7HSA should be better for extended high speed runs, no ? Can you please measure its resistance ?

No i just drove bike for sometime and removed the plug , didnt wash it a bit ..plug cap is brand new o.e . I am unable to take pics from digital cam , doesnt focus properly . I can tell is entire top of plug is sooty . i am removing plug using 16 ring spanner and tightenin using plug wrench . The plug nut was damaged by me while opening it , the spanner slipped , i mistakenly used 17 to open it.

Ok, as sibun mentioned it is a rich mixture.Originally posted by RohIIT View PostNo i just drove bike for sometime and removed the plug , didnt wash it a bit ..plug cap is brand new o.e . Get all the work done what he has mentioned. It is a simple job and should not cost more than Rs.500/- Don't take it to SVC as they don't remove the carbon deposits properly nor do they polish the valves.
As far as filter and carburetor is concerned, DO IT Yourself. Follow Pinaki's excellent DIY guide.
Take a few pictures of the head, piston and valves before and after cleaning them.

Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion
Without a properly focussed pic it is hard to tell if that soot you have on the plug is oil-soot or carburetor-running-rich sootOriginally posted by RohIIT View Post... I am unable to take pics from digital cam , doesnt focus properly . I can tell is entire top of plug is sooty ...
. You have to put camera in macro-mode to allow it to focus on such small items placed too close to the lens , atleast that's how it is on my coolpix 3100 . Also a steady camera support is useful .
Good idea to upkeep your brakes before monsoon , and wheel & sprocket bearings after monsoon
.
@ shoeb - i think he cleaned the plug-hole on the engine head , not the plug itself with kero . wouldn't it be a good idea to chop off a No16/17 ring wrench and keep the 16 half of it in the tool-bag ( would take less space too ) ; the plug wrench they gave in my tools is a total PITA and damages the plug's hex like that .
@ sibun - what ?! they changed the plug to higher heat-range !? previously only Pleasure scooter was using the cr6-hsa . Splendors , Passion & CD were using cr7-hsa .Last edited by Pinaki; 06-08-2013, 03:55 AM.
