I wanted to post this since a very long time. Also, with Paul being inactive on this thread, that enthusiasm and eagerness to post has lost somewhere.
Dated October 2013
No major work or a proper service was carried out on my splendor this year.
All it wanted was timely oil change and chain lubrication. It did not require even a brake or chain adjustment in the last 7K kms.
I was washing the bike only once a month along with my xtreme and polished it whenever necessary. It was a routine fill it,shut it, forget it.
One fine day, I received a parcel from sibun, it had two Osram silverstar bulbs, a DID timing chain and a handwritten letter(more on that later) .
I get some free time on a weekend and I decide to install the timing chain.
Spares
Few tools
Oil is drained
Magneto bolt is removed
Magneto being pulled using a magneto puller.

It was a pain to remove these two screws.
New timing chain installed .
Everything goes well and when the repair is finished, I take it for a test ride but the bike refuses to accelerate well, there is some hesitation in 2000 to 6000 RPM range.
I return back home, remove the timing cover and check the timing marks.
I then called sibun and he suggested me to check the timing once again, timing was right so I call him back again. We then discussed various possibilities- I get the carb cleaned, air screw replaced, insulator o-rings replaced , ignition coil and what not.
This goes on for a few days and the problem remained unsolved.
One night when I was going to sleep, I was wondering what it could be, what all happened with my bike and then I suddenly recollect that advancing the timing brought back the low end torque. This was the major hint that it is a ignition related issue, due to weak spark, the air fuel mixture was not getting enough time and spark to burn completely.

Next day I call sibun and narrate everything and he confirms that it is the excitor coil.
It took almost a week to find out a genuine excitor coil.
Here are few graphs of the spark energy vs RPM for Splendor. (Source- Respective OEM's brochure )
It is clearly evident from the graph that peak voltage, spark and duration is in 2000 -5000 RPM range, exactly where I was facing problem.
These are the part numbers for the exciter coil used in splendor. Splendor came with the generator assembly(magneto, stator coil, excitor coil) supplied by three vendors ie. ND, JHI and IN. At the time of replacing individual parts, they must be matched as parts of different vendors cannot be swapped .
31121-198-303 COIL, EXCITER (ND) (My splendor had ND- Nippon Denso)
31121-198-902 COIL, EXCITER (JHI)
31121-198-905 COIL, EXCITER (IN)

PS- Thanks a lot Sibun for your timely help as always.
