Hello Everyone!!

At last registered for this wonderful forum. I am following this thread for quite some time now and found it astonishing. Well, I am also a owner of Hero Honda Splendor Oct 2003 model and clocked more than 85000 KM on the odo till now. The bike never gave me any problems so far and is running smooth but I have some queries, experts please guide :

1. Do you think I should carry out some maintenance on my bike ? Note : I do take my bike for regular service & oil change every 6 months right from the beginning.
2. I have not changed my front tyer ( factory fitted) until now, do you think I should replace it or wait for some km's more ?
3. Regarding the engine oil, I am confused. what is the best engine oil for my bike ? I am using veedol 4T premium and found it excellent, the engine runs smooth. I read previous post by Sibun and he suggested veedol 4 T plus, Shell Advance AX7 10 w 40 and Motul. Which one should I continue to use ?

Kindly forgive me for the long list of queries posted above and the plenty to come next.

1. Yes , at 85000 kms you should check all parts yourself and see if any replacement is required or routine maintenance item has been ignored by the service you visit .

2 . Replace tyre and tube if the tread-depth is 2mm or less . While doing this , check the wheel rims for rust and tighten the spokes . Replace the rubber strip inside .

3 . Veedol is good , no need to change . Just keep replacing the oil every 2000kms or 4 months , whichever occurs earlier . Which grade of oil are you using ?

Welcome to the xbhp forums . Please post a photo of your Splendor , would love to see .

Thanks Pinaki, for your valuable suggestions. Will surely upload the photo's of my bike soon. Yes, I know the tyre change is due now but I am confused which tyre to choose especially the rear one. For the front one I'm planning to buy CEAT F 85 (2.75-18) and for rear I have selected CEAT Grip but I am confused between 2.75-18 and 3-18, which one to select ?
I heard that if I upgrade to 3-18 than there will be a drop in mileage and I do not want to compromise on FE, I always get FE in the range of 65-68 as of now.

I think that bike was older model and the filter was dry type. Thats why he tapped a few times and done
Older models had foam based filters which could be re-used. Newer models come with paper filters.

If you haven't carried out any repairs on the bike then I guess apart from spark-plug, chain, filter, cables, battery and brakes - nothing else is touched.
So I suggest you to
1.Change the oil of front suspension.
2.Remove the sprocket carrier, clean it and pack the bearing with fresh grease.
3.Clean and pack all the wheel bearings with fresh grease.

Change the tyre as soon as possible. Go for 2.75X18 for the front and 3.00X14 for the rear.
I am using the same spec and there is no drop in FE but there is a huge improvement in stability.

@All (especially Pinaki ji )
Last weekend I had the opportunity to test the difference between a front suspension with fresh oil and a 3 years old oil. The one with old oil was not damping effectively and was taking a lot of time to re-coil (if thats the correct word) back and was bottoming out easily.
So as a rule of thumb, fork oil should be changed every two years and overhauled along with new seals every 4 years(or whenever it leaks).
It took me less than 5 minutes to remove the fork,10 mins to clean all the gunk and another 10 mins to fill fresh oil and assemble everything back on bike.

If I had a good video camera.........

Thanks Shoeb, in the next servicing will carry out work as suggested by you. Regarding the rear tyre, can you tell me which on you are using ? I have also changed the headlight few years ago and install a splendor + one. I am using the Bosh bulb at the moment, can I just use the osram's bulb without any modifications ?

There is a song you know -"Yun to log kahenge, logon ka kaam he kehena".

Translated to english it is " People will always say as it is their habit to say".

Let me tell you this is not new, back in 2004-2006 when i was studying in 12th class even that time all my friends who were riding pulsars, CBZ and other bikes ridiculed me.

But look now i am having the same bike running like new and they have already changed 2-3 bikes, even their bikes have not been ridden 1/5 th of my bike.

To tag it just on this monday touched 100 kph on my Joy while testing it for some problem in a deserted road. Bike was feeling steady with no un-stability and had nil vibration. This is with a rattling connecting rod.

Are yaar upload some photos as this thread is getting monotonous.

For the front CEAT F85 2.75-18 is a good and excellent choice.

For the rear i would suggest CEAT M86 3.00-18 if you are not into off-roading. The best tyre when it comes to performance as it has good grip on normal roads and mileage is more than other tyres.

And you will be surprised to know CEAT m86 is the bread winner tyre for CEAT.

For the bike you can do the following servicing:-
1. As usual change engine oil.
2. Change front suspension oil and if possible open the shock and clean the shock and replace oil and seals. Works much better than simply replacing oil.

3. If head and valve has not been worked on from last 20k open and do the same.

4. Check clutch plates for wear and change if kick is slipping when starting the bike.

5. Check cables and if tight change those.

6. Check the handle and if the turning is not smooth change the coneset.

7. Change spark plug and air filter and clean carburettor.Pretty much over as this bike doesn't require anything else.

Yes the old oil becomes thick like GHEE and thus doesn't pass properly through the holes in piston and thus the returning is not smooth. Also since the oil has lost its hydro properties so the shock bottoms out.

Man two years my bike 6 months is more than enough as bike would have crossed 12 k in six months.

A time was there when my Joy shocks oil was changed every 3 months and engine oil every 15 days.

Personally I'm stuck to mrf since that's what most of my earlier bikes came with and I cannot afford to experiment with tyre makes and so I've always bought the same while changing later too . They've not failed me yet . So my advice on this is biased - Get mrf nylogrip-plus (ngp) for rear and nylogrip rib for front . Don't forget to buy genuine mrf tubes of same size as tyres and mrf branded rubber strips that fits beneath the tubes inside the rim . Derust and paint properly inside the rims before fitting new tyre+tube and use copious amount of french-chalk inside there . The stock size for tyres for the Splendor is 2.75x18 - 42P/4PR on front & 2.75x18 - 48P/6PR on rear . You can fit 3.00x18 - 6PR/52P on the rear with some benefits and without much detrimental effect , many are riding such and I shall be trying this too my next tyre change . These are 1.6" rims I believe and can take 3 sizes of tyres 2.5/2.75/3.00 . I am even running 2.5x18 nylorib on front (like the yamaha RX) . Of-course - safest is to stick to the stock size , now you don't need me to tell you that ! MRF nylogrip-plus is available both in 2.75x18 and 3.00x18 . Mind that the inner tube for 2.75 & 3.00 are different size too , as is with all different tyre sizes - but shopkeepers try to sell you 2.75 tubes for all , so care to get correct size .

The ceat secura M86 tread pattern is exactly same as the mrf nylogrip plus - siped blocks with central groove . I like tyres with deep straight-line central groove - they channel water well and have excellent wet grip .

I know , I know brothers ... am really trying to find a free weekend now for refilling my front shocks . Now the front forks have become hard to compress and not responding to road undulations = bumpy front . Luckily there is no oil seal leak etc problems yet . It's my fault only since I've never replaced the oil in about 4 years of ownership . Seals and oil etc have been purchased ... time and opportunity cannot be .

Sibun, many thanks for your advice. I have also posted the pics of by bike tyres so that you can see the current status. Please look carefully at the 7Th pic, you will see there is some oil at the base of the engine. Can anyone tell me if it is normal and where it came ? Or can anything be done to prevent this.

Handle tuning has already been done before couple of times and it's smooth. The spark plug has been changed a few years back. Will surely work on front suspension in a few days. Any other suggestions will be much appreciated.

I have a CD DAWN 2008 (with big headlamp) I always note that the steel & wire woven tube is not in my DAWN.
Experts can you explain what it is ?

Secondly after inspiring from Posts i made some DIY
CD DAWN - 35000km reading in odometer

1. I cleaned my Air filter, oiled it. cleaned & lubricated chain
2. Drained oil, Opened clutch cover to clean strainer & centrifugal filter. Was not able to remove screws of centrifugal filter. cleaned.
While removing gasket by knief got a cut on finger hence changed packing to new but not a good job.
Changed oil to AX 5 10 W 40 from Shell. After couple of days added Nulon engine treatment.
3. Tuned carburetor first time. Getting 65-70 average in moderate traffic.

Problem - my bike has no battery from 2 years i am running same on capacitors. I can blow horn, Blinkers well.
After tuning by my self i am observing that even when engine is hot & i change gear from top to 1st with zero throttle and apply brakes for sudden stoppage or traffic signal my bike is turned off. It need 2-3 kicks to start. tuning is perfect as bike will run for even 5 min if kept on on idling.
is it because of capacitor ? What are disadvantages of running bike on capacitors ?

Thanks for pics , it's a lovely bike and well maintained too . The tyres can run some more , but I would change them both now ... the rubber is gone hard and tyre prices are always going up . The kick-shaft oil seal seems to be leaking ... check and replace it .

That is the pipe from the secondary air-induction valve going into the exhaust port - it mixes fresh air from air-box into the exhaust gasses to reduce CO emissions . CD dawn doesn't have it , good riddance - don't worry about it , I don't like the contraption anyway .

Stop using nulon or any other engine oil additives . Buy a battery instead . SF sonic is good and cheap .

To remove reluctant screws of the centrifugal-filter's cover you'd need an impact driver . Better to get it done from an Hero service center - I have done this and they didn't charge much for this job .

While removing gasket with sharp blade , other than your hand be VERY VERY careful as to not scratch or score the metal mating surfaces ( not a single scratch ! ). I wet the gasket with kerosene or acetone for sometime before .

There would be no problem with replacing the battery with a capacitor I guess , if you could find a capacitor of same capacity as the battery and that fits in there - which is not the case . So the tiny caps you're using cannot emulate the battery and is likely to give you various trouble .

For start/idle problems try cleaning out the carb and fuel tank . Clean all electrical contacts and check the plug-cap for corrosion or rust inside it . Your fuel mileage is just fine .

Hi all, I have been a silent reader of xbhp from april 2013. I own a (Hero)passion pro which is 11 months old. It has clocked 10,309 kms as of today. May i join this conversation too?!! Mr.Sibun, Mr.Shoeb, Mr.Pinaki? Those were the names that i could remember within a while. When i first joined Xbhp, i use to spend hours and hours for reading the "Tourer" part alone. This january only i came to know that there is a wonderful and useful section of lots of information going on. So, i started reading this thread from the very 1st page, and i am still on page 38!! I have to google a lot and understand the technical speaking of the above three Sirs! Thats why i am very slow. Anyway, i shall catch up with you within a couple of months. I have a million of doubts to ask you people. Hope you will help me. I may also share my experiences with you people.
Regards
Jeswin.

Please look carefully at the 7Th pic, you will see there is some oil at the base of the engine. Can anyone tell me if it is normal and where it came ? Or can anything be done to prevent this. sibunHandle tuning has already been done before couple of times and it's smooth. The spark plug has been changed a few years back. Will surely work on front suspension in a few days. Any other suggestions will be much appreciated.
First of all i would like to mention that i am impressed by your bike maintenance as the engine area looks super clean and spic and span. For that leaking oil change the kick shaft oil seal and it will be good. And one more thing is that you are not polishing the bike as a result paint is not looking good. Bikes at those times particularly 2000-2006 batches have lead based paints so do not get damaged easily so can easily be restored.I would request you to polish the bike properly and bike will give complex to new bikes. For polishing i would advice you to go for two step.1. Cleaning the existing paint surface and bringing shine back and,2. Coating it with Wax.Get three products :-1. Showroom polish- contains cleansing agent- The link:- http://www.waxpol.com/showroom-finish.html- just copy and paste the link and you will get the idea. This will clean the surface and bring the glaze in paint.2. Wax coating- Get the Waxpol caranuba wax to protect the new found glaze- http://www.waxpol.com/carnauba-car-polish.html- paste the link and you will see the product details.3.Vinyl leather and dashboard- For getting that shine back in unpainted plastic parts like rear mudguard and speedometer get this polish and apply- link- http://www.waxpol.com/vinyl-leather-...-polish.htmlDo these and look the difference. For handle if it is smooth then nothing to worry and for spark plug if it is two years then better change them.

Welcome to the gang and i am thankful to all new members as with you all the thread has become lively once again. And please do not call us sir as it feels odd.And for your doubts then you are welcome to ask as much questions as you like and i will answer without any problem.Good to know that people are still interested in these bikes and all.And that photo is excellent.Reminded me of something some 4 years ago.Ah! sweet memories:-It was in may of 2009. It was extremely hot with temperatures touching 46 degrees in Noon here. My friend and me have gone to Balasore a distance of 210 km to bring his bike (Apache 180) on my Joy. We were returning and it was around 2 Pm and was extremely hot. My friend was ripping at 100 -110 and i was following him on my Joy at full throttle with speedo showing 100 and when wind was less the speedo touched 110 kph many times. Like this in the hot weather we were constantly running for 30 mins on full throttle. The highway was deserted because of heat. After 30 mins we stopped under a tree to rest and drink water when my friend came near me and said " tere bike ko salaam karta hu, kal dono 70-80 ke speed pe gaye or aaj 100 ke speed pe pura 30 mins tak dauda or fir bhi kuch nahi fark pada".The photo reminded me as the scenery was same as we were standing under tree and the road was deserted, So sad do not have a photo.
