  • Finished overhauling the engine of my friend's engine.
Thanks a lot Sibun for your support over PM.

    Exhaust Valve was burnt severely.
    Crank main bearings had play.
Big-end bearing had too much play.
Clutch housing bushes were shot, too much play between primary ring gear and housing.
Bore was glazed ,hone marks were not visible but it did not have any scratch/seize marks.
Piston was 0.25 oversize,Sibun can you find something odd in piston ?
Carbon deposit on piston was not hard but flaky, head had hard deposits.
All the gaskets were re-used by the previous owner, even the o-rings were re-used by applying sealant.

Vibrations and oil leakage was the main reason for opening the crankcases.

You can use 10W 30 in winters and you will love it.But as temperatures rises use 20W 40 as this engine is designed with that in mind.
It is a wrong belief that 10W 30 engines run hotter. Instead those engines designed to run on 10 W 30 oil will heat up and loose efficiency on using 20W 40. It is because in 10W 30 oil the pump will be pumping more oil per minute than 20W 40 oil, so the more oil circulating actually cools the engine.

On the Yamaha ? No ... never .. niet ! If it gets quite cold in winter you can go down to 10w40 at the most .. but no cheap mineral oil comes in that grade here ... so ... stick to 20w40 .. preferably Yamalube or Motul . Do you have a problem with 20w40 Yamalube ?
Savita chemicals was making oil exclusively for HeroHonda and Honda in tie-up with Idemitshu Japan . Now no more Savita made Honda/Hero oil in the market , so they are selling it under their own brand Savsol , I think . Anyway , Yamaha never tied up with them for oil(so better not rely upon their recommendations for Yamaha bikes) ... Yamaha has tied up with Motul instead and for good reason . Unlike Hero/Honda who tries to recommend a single grade/type of oil across their models , Yamalube comes in several useful grades and types(mineral to synthetic) and the specifications are not the same as the generic Motul oils . Instead Yamaha specifies the oil to Motul for their Yamalube brand tailor-made for their bike models , and they do work very nicely on the bikes too .

Yamaha has tied up with savsol to produce 20w40 yamalube(blue bottle). Be cautious.. thats quite an inferior grade to Motul's Yamalube(black bottle).

            • Oh my gosh ! I didn't know that ...
I'm filling Motul 3000 20w40 on my Crux nowadays(just because it's cheaper than Yamalube SL 20w40) . Once filled Servo 20w40 recently(purchased from IndianOil pump) , nice oil as ever .

                          • Friends need help
My yamaha fazers speed o meter stopped working..the only option available for me is the tacho meter..there is a green marking in between 3000-5000 rpm..how to shift gear and know speeds using tachometer..My bike is so old that the components of speed o meter r not available.....

                            Comment

                            • Check the cable, meter does not get damaged so easily. And you don't need to look into the tachometer to shift, just go by the feel of engine.

Yes check the cable, the inner cable broke sometimes when junk. Its is also easily available on off market for Rs.20 or so, check & buy only inner cable will work fine.
