  • Hi Guys,

I have been a proud owner of Black ZMR since July 2011. I really enjoy riding the ZMR but since last month it has started developing a issue.

One day i was driving the bike and stopped at a signal. Switched off ignition as there was some time before signal would turn green. When the signal was about to turn green, i switched on Ignition and pressed the self start and starter motor did the cranking part but the engine didnt started. I switched off and on and tried to start the engine but its all same. The starter motor carnks but engine dont pick up. I was all worried about what has happened to the black beauty and in the thought process, i waited for 3-4 minutes and i again did the usual steps and "Voila"! the engine started and after that everything went usual.
After 6-7 days the same thing happened once again at a signal. I stopped for signal to turn green, turned ignition off. Turned it ON again, and again the same story, I wait for 2-3 minutes and it works again.
5-6 days later, I gave the bike for routine service and told them about the issue. I collected the bike in evening and i am told that all the things have been sorted out.

2 days later i am riding the bike at around 40kmph and suddenly ignition goes OFF (only this time i didnt switch it OFF myself) . I tried to start the bike, same thing, starter motor makes its usal sound but engine not starting. Luckily i was around the corner of my house, so i just dragged it to parking, waited for 3-4 minutes, did the usual procedure of bike starting and it started working again. I put it in neutral, revved it a little, and around 8-10 seconds of starting, the ignition automatically went off again. Now i tried to start it again, sometime it started and sometimes it didnt. Whenever it started, it went off in around 6-8 seconds. So i leave for again 10 minutes, and tried to perform the things i was doing earlier, but this time it started and engine remained alive for 3-4 minutes and after that i switched the ignition OFF (this time myself), Next morning i checked for any problem in starting, but it didnt occur then. But i was sure there is ome problem so i went to SVC guys ask them to take a look, as it was saturday, he told me to come on monday, he will inspect it thoroughly.

So on monday, i started from my place for SVC, After i have driven around 4-5 kms, and i was riding at around 70kmph, the ignition went off again. i took the bike sideways. Since by this time i now have experience that i have to 2-3 minutes before i can start it again, i waited and started and it worked, I went around 15-20 meters (hardly 8-10 secs after starting) and ignition went off again. This happened around 3-4 times in next 50 meter. After that i waited for 5-6 minuted before i would try starting and i tried starting and it worked and drove down another 1.2 km without ignition went OFF and i was at SVC. I told him all what happened. He said he will do a thorough inspection and asked me to take bike next day.

Next day i call him up to know what is the status of my bike and he says the fuel has dot damaged because of short circuit.

Guys please help me out to locate the problem point. Do you really think the fuel pump might have got shorted and giving this issue? Because what i have read about other bikes like R15 or P22-Fi is that if the fuel pump gets damaged or faulty, then bike dont even start. But all in my cases i had my bike working again, after the ignition went off, just by waiting for 5-10 minutes.

Guys please enlighten me on the issue, cause hanging the fuel pump will cost me a bomb and i dont want to burn my pockets unnecessarily. I also doubt whether those service guys really inspect the bikes properly. I get my bike serviced a Pratham Motors, Wakdewadi, Pune.

I was facing this sort of issue when I got my Black Pearl in 2010.. The issue was with the wire to the ignition coil.. the wire was loose and needed to be tightened.. those so called ASC guys knew nothing.. Inspite of telling them a thousand times that the issue is somewhere with the wiring.. they never bothered to check it.. but finally i got someone to remove the fairing and pull out the tank.. the Ignition coil is located under the tank.. so check it.. that could be the issue..

      Hope this resolves the issue..

This is a very irritating issue that I faced.. since then no problem.. Touchwood

Almost same issue as i had in my ZMR...but in my case i need to give a acceleration to start button....and RPM get increase/decrease and sometimes its decrease too much and then engine get off....mine had a issue in fuel injector.....

In your case as told by SVC fuel pump is faulty..have you run bike in reserve fuel many times?..if yes do avoid in future also..

and i assume your fuel pump shall be covered under warranty.....otherwise it cost is very high..apprx 12,000

I was facing same issue and the ASC guys said it was the Fuel Pump issue.. they even ordered a new fuel pump for me.. but I insisted them on getting the wiring checked.. and we found that the wire to the ignition coil was loose.. got it tightened and since then my Black Pearl in running fine.. so Instead of going and changing the fuel pump.. he can get the ignition coil wire checked.. if that seems fine.. then he can go ahead with replacing the fuel pump..

I mean.. its just a suggestion its upto him to try it or not

ignition coil can be a issue...

what i also known that if an fuel pump is damage then bike will not start (may be i am wrong) ...but for rockyec78 bike starts and shuts off after riding...

You are right! I also thought my Fuel Pump was dead when the ASC said so as my bike was behaving as if there is no fuel and the engine cranked but didn't start.. later it will start and as if there is no fuel is going past the tank to the Fuel Pump or as if there is no fuel in the tank.. but it was not the issue with the Fuel Pump.. I even thought about getting a replacement bike by suing Hero Honda back in 2010.. but as I doubted.. it was the wiring.. got it fixed and I am a happy ZMRian

Check the ignition coil , clean the injector & fuel pump , and also clean the air filter .
If ignition coil wire is loose bike will behave as you mentioned . So tight it , if it is loose .
If injector is clogged same will happen , so get it cleaned .
If there is some blockage in fuel links to fuel pump same result you get so better ask them to refit it by removing the petrol in it ( they know how to do it ), make sure after refit of pump just not start bike immediately , turn ignition on-off 3/4 times so pump can get required amount of petrol needed in it .
Also if air supply to air filter is blocked bike will not start or goes off . So check there too.

I have visited Pratham Motors couple of times ( for spares not for service ) , they get bikes for servicing in good numbers so less chances that they will provide attention to problems . Better be there & get it done infront or switch to other ASC .

My babe is well after the oil change. It doesn't get as much hot as before.Have rode nearly 400km after change and till now felt the engine to be bit more smooth in 4,5th gear.Yes there is a bit fall in acceleration while compared to 10w30 oil.but post 70,you don't feel the lag and even vibrations from engine is also reduced a bit.No much change in sound in 1,2,3rd gear, but yes rest two are too smooth.I din't had any problem with gear shifts before,so no much change in that aspect. Milage is same 42-44kmpl in mixed condition (most of the time bike will be above 80kmph).Overall,really felt good till now....have to see how long it will last...So many ZMR owner's are using this oil and no complaint till now...am enjoying the ride..

                            • Thanks for the suggestions guys.

As i mentioned earlier, i have given bike at Pratham Motors, Pune for resolving the issue. So there my bike is being serviced by their so called Sr. Supervisor (whose face always bears a look telling you "Hey who are you and why are you talking to me? Anyways i know too much and i wont be helping you.").
The first time i called him up to know what is the problem in the bike, he replied that fuel pump is dead, fuel pump has shorted, water has ingressed and we will need to change fuel pump which will come in 15+ days and will cost around 14k. I wasnt aware of the exact working of the fuel system of ZMR, so it was difficult for me to understand what he was telling. So i went through forum, and found some good threads to get understanding of the system.

Today, I went to SVC tomeet him personally to know what has happened exactly and what action has to be taken. So i asked him to check a few things as mentioned by you guys. Also my friend asked him if the fuel pump is damaged then how is the bike starting after waiting for few minutes. After this he started throwing attitude and tantrums. He wanted that as we all know more than him i should take the bike away and etc. As expected he was not very helpful. Then i waited for him to come back to normal and again asked what the problem is. This time he says the windings are getting heated and thats why the ignition is switching off after driving 3-4 kilometers. This is something different what he told me over phone. The first thing i insured that my bike still starting as i was in doubt with their commitment for servicing the bike.

Since he is reluctant to look into the suggestions given by you and only saying that fuel pump has gone bad (shorting or winding heating), i tried that can he get that replaced in warranty as it is only 1 year and 9 months old. So i asked him for covering this thing under warranty. In turn he asks me to show the service book of bike. i hand it over to him. He starts flipping the pages randomly, then find one page where the date of purchase is mentioned, gives it a very "deeply thinking" look, does some calculation in mind, does some maths also (probably), one more SVC guy joins him...... he also does some calculation and finally tells me that i cannot claim warrant as i have not availed 5th and 6th service. PERIOD.

I dont understand why these guys make their own rules. That service book dont say that i should have availed all free services i order to claim the warranty. That book only insists on getting paid services done at regular interval. Although i tried a lot with him and he has told me to contact him the next day, he will see whether he can get it done under warranty or not. I am not expecting much but i am hopeful.

I am thinking that if they dont cover it in warranty then can you guys tell me any alternative svc or garage where i can get my bike checked??

Yes, a few times (not more than 5-6 times in over 1 year 9 months period) i have driven the bike at the blinking fuel indicator but not for more than 7-8 km (max. out of all those times). As soon as it comes to two bar, i usually fill the thank. Most of the times i have kept it more than half filled.
Sometimes i park it on side stand and then when i switch it ON next time the indicator starts blinking. As i know at the time of parking it was showing 3 bars, so it take a few seconds to come to level, sometimes it takes a little more to settle and show the right number of bars. In such situations i do ignore that blinking indicator. And also for last 2 months i have not driven with that blinking indicator (when it actually really blinked for low fuel level).
