My enquiry is, would the gear box be harmed and to what extent. As ashwin said, upshifts were no problem but downshifts I had to do when rpm was extremely low. What would happen to my gearbox? The mech said once in a while if we do so, it won't harm. Btw, ithe distance I travelled without clutch is 20kms, most of which is highway
    It wont be hurted.
I have ridden my Fz for 2 days without clutch as the clutch cable was not available in showroom, nor outside. (have ridden nearly 45 kms in city without clutch, faced lots of difficulties though)
As most of it is highway, no issues. The Accelerator should be entirely down while shifting gears without clutch.
As it is a cable cut, But do avoid it. Because continuous up/down shifting & riding without clutch will damage the gears.

    • I have done worse in my bike and its still doing fine, the outright fact is that the puny 223cc block of the ZMA doesnt have enough juice to actually wreck the tranny.
And while you're managing to ride like this, lemme give you a few tips.

      1. Using force is a BIG NO!!!!!

      2. For upshifting, very very gently push the gear lever up and close and open throttle, bike will automatically upshift.

      2. For downshifting, very very gently push the gear lever down and gently brake, the moment the bike downshifts on its own, open throttle, else the rear tire will lock.

Revmatching is fun, and once you really master it, you wont be using the clutch at all, even after getting it fixed.

this is one of the most difficult tasks I ever faced with my friend's ZMR.. when I went to Chennai for a vacation.. my friend called me early morning at around 6 asking me to come to a place nearlly 4kms from my house.. i went there and he was standing with his ZMR and he was like.. F***.. the Clutch cable is dead... I towed his bike on my bro's Hunk and he took my bike saying fix the darn cable and bring it to my house.. I was like a**hole.. i need a bike to get the cable and fix it and i needed the bike to drop my bro at his colleagues place as they go in car pool.. my idiotic friend didn't care to listen to my words and that jerk just went away.. Now trying to figure out how to drop my bro on this darn bike with a broken clutch cable.. i was trying to look for an alternative as no spare parts store is open at 6AM.. then I called up one of my pal who is a mechanic.. and asked him if any problem will come to the gearbox if gear is applied without clutch.. he said it won't harm it if done once in a full moon.. "I started the bike using self start.. pushed the bike such that the bike doesn't jerk off and stop.. it happened smoothly as if I applied the gear managed to ride the bike for 10kms to my pals mechanic shop.. forced that idiot to open the shed and made him fix it temporarily.. he was smart enough to do something idiotic (good idea from a person who has never ever studied and was a mechanic lifetime) dropped my bro.. and later in the day got it fixed.. so if your clutch cable ever gets cut off and you are in a halt.. self start the bike in neutral.. push it till it reaches some 5-10kmph, jump onto the bike and shift the gear you are set to go.. atleast without having to screw your gearbox or clutch plate much

That's exactly wat I did. Get it towed to a sufficient speed and change it to second gear. I did not try for first though

Clutch transfers power from primary to drive, when we pull the clutch lever what happens is the clutch disengages, which matches the rev's, taking load of main and counter shaft, enabling smooth shifts, but actually when we close throttle before upshfting the engine speed matches the drive speed momentarily and thats your window, if you're already puting little load on the shifter then it will automatically upshift when you reach this window.

Got it! That explains the smooth transition while upshifting without the clutch. I used to apply a little force and when the time was right, the gears used to change..

If it sounds like a bicycle chain when you leave the pedal at high speed it normal. If its a humming sound, its normal. But, if its a loud sound, you need to lube it.
And what do you mean by wrong installation bro?

Well.. the sound has been there ever since I got the chain set changed. Of course I got them to lubricate it during the service.. notnthebtype of sound that comes from a bicycle when I say wring installation. I mean improper fitting.. sorry for the wrong term.. lol

My bike's chain makes that (almost like a) bicycle chain sound and its constant and faintly audible. More so as I have removed the chain cover and I lube it 2-3 times every month.
If you find kinks on the chain, then its improper, otherwise there can be nothing wrong with the installation. BTW, do you feel extra vibes as well due to the chain sprocket change?

If no, there's nothing to worry about!
