My bike struggles to start when the engine is cold. It takes almost 4 revolutions for it to start. Once it starts it works fine. What should I do about it?

Re: Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
Hi,
i recently shifted to Malad West and am looking for a place to service my 220 dts-fi.
previously I used to service it at Sai service, parel.
Have enquirerd at Executive Bajaj Malad. They say they will service the bike but unsure if they know about the fi model.
need to change the chain sprocket and fuel filter
the bike is still running near perfect.
have done around 15k on the odo.

Oh definitely, with that amount of dirt I will recommend cleaning the fluid reservoir and changing the brake hose and replacing the brake fluid as well. If you haven't upgraded to the steel braided hose, this would be a good time to upgrade.Originally posted by sandwichk View PostWhat should I do with the brake? Typically an issue with either -Originally posted by sandwichk View PostMy bike struggles to start when the engine is cold. It takes almost 4 revolutions for it to start. Once it starts it works fine. What should I do about it?
a) Battery becoming weak, this could be either an issue with the battery or even the charging circuit
b) Starter coil becoming weak
I don't know about Mumbai service centers currently, but I am guessing nobody would want to touch the Fi model.Originally posted by bragzg View PostHi,

*If* the bike is running fine at least the Fi component. Do not touch it, just get the mechanicals serviced at any service centre of your choice. If the service centre can order Fi parts for you then you should just get the filters (air & fuel) changed and you should be sorted.
However, if you have issues with Fi component (incorrect fueling, throttle response improper, CO levels too high or low) OR any of the sensors going kaput then you need to find a place that still has the Bajaj 220 Fi diagnostic tool with them help you resolve any issues either the Fi components or the sensors._________________________

Thanks praful,
Got the chain and sprockets changed.
Also did a engine flush. Service center said they can't source the fuel filter.
Bike ran well for a few weeks. But now it's not starting. The fi component is making a louder sound than usual on switching on. The fuel gauge still shows 4 bars, but on physical inspection tank looks almost empty. Is the fuel gauge indicator faulty?

Re: Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
Don't depend too much on the fuel gauge, as it's just an approximate indicator. Fill up at least 5-6 litres and try to start it.Originally posted by bragzg View Post.

When you say it's not starting, what exactly is happening? After the fuel pump primes, is the engine cranking up or even that is not happening. There are multiple reasons for this.
You could get the fuel float serviced. I don't remember if the carb 220s filter can fit the Fi tank. Will check this with my svc center and revert.Originally posted by sandwichk View PostFuel gauge of my Fi is not working from a long time. Would this fit on my 220 Fi or does it need different fuel level sensor?

14/36 must be equal to the old sprocket values. I m talking maths here.Originally posted by sandwichk View PostGot the chain set changed to 14T-36T. Still my Fi does the same 57kmph@4000rpm and the stupid rear tyre has full tread. Will get 120/90 someday.
14/36 = 0.38.
This value should come down for shorter gearing. This value should go up for taller gearing. So bigger front sprocket increases the numerator and gives taller gearing.
Smaller front sprocket reduces the numerator and reduces the overall value. Hence increasing the acceleration at the cost of top end and FE.
If you are a sedate rider and want to drop few hundred revs for better cruising, I think bringing down the ratio to 0.33 or 0.31 helps a lot without putting much stress on final drive. Note that dropping more than 0.04 (eg dropping from 0.40 to 0.30 which is 0.1, more than prescribed 0.04 value) might not go well for your bike.Last edited by kris123456; 12-10-2017, 05:09 PM.

Earlier it was 14T-37T. BTW now I'm having problem shifting gears. The lever seems to be little up and its not downshifting easily.Originally posted by kris123456 View Post14/36 must be equal to the old sprocket values. I m talking maths here.

Sprockets have nothing to do with shifting gears. While changing sprockets, the gears shifter must have been screwed. Try to apply grease to the shifter connect rods.Originally posted by sandwichk View PostEarlier it was 14T-37T. BTW now I'm having problem shifting gears. When you change sprocket, did you check the other aspects of chain and sprockets?? Aspect ratio, pitch, etc etc??

Re: Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
What is the speed it does at 6K RPM now? Sorry that is my reference point, I have forgotten speeds done at other rpms :POriginally posted by sandwichk View PostGot the chain set changed to 14T-36T. And what size/brand front tyre are you running? That makes a difference too as it change the reading error either by positive or negative factors.
Adjust the play on the gear shift lever, there are two screws on the lever that can help you do that.Originally posted by sandwichk View PostEarlier it was 14T-37T. BTW now I'm having problem shifting gears. The lever seems to be little up and its not downshifting easily._________________________

Check yours when you ride next time. I rarely go above 5kOriginally posted by Praful View PostWhat is the speed it does at 6K RPM now? Sorry that is my reference point, I have forgotten speeds done at other rpms [emoji14]
90/90 -17 MRF stock tyreAnd what size/brand front tyre are you running? That makes a difference too as it change the reading error either by positive or negative factors.
Yes. Now its okay. I sometimes feel the wheel wobble while turning. No noise from disc. How much does the cone set of 220 cost?Adjust the play on the gear shift lever, there are two screws on the lever that can help you do that.Pulsar 220 Fi (2008) 28k km

I can't check because I am not on stock configOriginally posted by sandwichk View PostCheck yours when you ride next time. I rarely go above 5k
On the stock front and rear tyres with stock sprockets, the 220 Fi does 83Kmph @ 6K RPM.
With a 120/90 tyre leading to taller gearing the bike does 88Kmph @ 6K RPM, with the 36T rear sprocket you should be doing approximately the same._________________________

Re: Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
On cold starts sometimes the self runs free. Its similar to the sound when you try to start the bike on low battery. kharrrr. Battery is new and good. Starter clutch/One way clutch replaced few months ago.Pulsar 220 Fi (2008) 28k km
