  • @Saif: The Zma is known to be a very enthusiastic chain-sprocket consumer
For prolonging the life of the two, I bought myself a 500ml can of Castrol SAE-90 Manual Gear Oil for lubing the chain. Have been lubing the chain every 500kms.
Costs 98 bucks and comes recommended by one of the oil gurus: Raccoon

We were surprised when Ravi's ZMA did our 2000 KM tour on all sorts of terrain and high speed highway runs without a sound from the chain when we applied the OKS worth its salt.

BTW, a SAE 90 gear oil is no thicker than an SAE 40 or 50 Engine oils. But what makes the oil work better than the engine oil that our mechanics spray is
          1) it would be new oil as against used oil sprayed on the chain - usually.
          2) the engine oils we use are multigrade and would be thinner than a single grade SAE 50 oil at normal temperature.

            Both seem contradictory

I have used both and i can say that SAE 90 oil is very much thicker than the multigrade oils we use for engines.

            • ^^^ they both are supporting statements... not contradictory. what my previous post lacks is a concluding statement which was left for you to imagine in the flow and not by breaking it.

In the end SAE 90 gear oil is thicker than any engine oil we generally see these days... because those engine oils are multi grade. if you manage to get a SAE 50 Engine oil please do compare that with SAE 90 gear oil. Else, listen to what SAE has to say.

Just made my point that SAE 90 oil IS Thicker than the normal engine oils we use!

I didnt comment anything on what SAE has got to say

                • Mental note: KP's statement and Ravi's experience might just force me to try the OKS spray once i exhaust this can of Castrol

@KP and Ravi: Will i have to buy the chain cleaner also though..?

One question from me; How do u apply the Oil to the chain?

Do u use any kind of an oil dispenser? Whenever i use SAE90 i have no other option but to get my hands dirty.

Actually I read something like this on somewhere. I asked the mechanic also. He said you can do it for 30 seconds. I wanted to drain the mineral oil completely as I was going fully synthetic for the first time.
THough I dont think it has caused any damage but it was a complete waiste also as even running the engine on idle for 40-50 sec only 4-5 extra drops of oil came down. No use

Sorry dude... I neither got offended nor meant to offend or point out someone. Guess my words were not put together very well.

It is funny how we both want to say the same thing but end up pointing out each other

that gear oil can is gonna last really long for you... and even after that I'd say - don't splurge your money on what is not needed. Ravi used it as an experiment as I had the OKS Lube can for my R15's o-ring Chain.

You might want to stick to the gear oil and grease technique that works very well and is inexpensive.

Yes, Kerosine is better any day.

Don't want to pin you more for that but if you really want to drain more engine oil from the engine then wait patiently for the drain to happen, tilt the bike one side, hond, then back to normal and tilt to other side, hold then back and might want to repeat this once more.

As such, there is absolutely no problem mixing Synthetic & mineral oils... only that you would want to take out the used oil as much as possible and have fresh oil poured in.

                              • ^^True KP. I think im gonna be using the oil for a reallllly long time
Its working really well too. The chain nose comes down significantly after a session of oiling.

I don't clean the chain as it doesn't seem to be getting dirty thanks to the excellent chain guard that comes with the Zma. Hence, havent bothered with de-greasing etc.
Btw, I oil the chain but apply no grease whatsoever. As for the oil, i use the dispenser that one finds at garages. The one with a long spout and a trigger-like mechanism at the other end.
