  • Some queries guys ,

Which is the engine oil which svc guys use during service(the one for which they charge rs.450) . WHat kinda oil is it , i mean semi synth , fully synth ??
Sorry but I dont have much idea about engine oils and other technical stuff

Also , my bike's done 7500kms till now. It's been always run on that SVC oil which they provide , although I'm pretty much satisfied with the smoothness and performance of my bike , I would like to know if there is any other better engine oil option available to improve the smoothness of the engine

they use mineral , since you have completed 5k+ kms you can go for semi synth and fully synth, some people have observed smoothness and response gets better, but dont expect too much.

Wrong info buddy, they use Yamalube SemiSynthetic oil. I've found that Yamalube SS lasts only about 1500-1700kms of city riding in my bike, whereas Motul 5100 Semi synthetic lasts for 2500-3500 kms easily with some moderate ripping sessions as well.

I've been using the Motul 5100 for the past 8 months and have done about 7k kms on that oil (have changed it at intervals of 2-3k), and found it extremely satisfying. If you want to shift from the company fed yamalube, I'd recommend the motul5100. Some other members here are also using that oil, Tibby, Shivanshu bhaiyya, hotantivirus, ishaan (Delhi xbhp, don't know his ID), and a few of my non xbhp friends are using it for long and don't find any problems with it. Motul actually is lighter on your pocket as the stock one lasts lesser than motul so you spend lesser on oil when using motul)
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Sorry, my bad , i thought mineral grade is used by default and ss or fs on demand. By the way, some people recommend using mineral for the first 5k kms then switching to fs or ss.

Thanks for the info mate .
So, further , what should be the procedure/pattern for the oil change ??

Will the SVC guys do it if i take the OIL to them ?? or is it advisable to DIY , as ive heard the oil needs to be completely drained and the SVC guys are a bit lazy at this

You can use Motul 5100 , it's semi synthetic and really good. I use Motul 3000 4t plus (mineral oil) and change it after every 1000kms, so it works well for me and the engine remains smooth.
The FS will give you negligible performance gains , somewhere in Bike India I had read that the FS is impractical for Indian conditions and due to it's low viscosity engine doesn't feel that smooth. Though I don't think it should void the warranty, in the owner manual it's been recommended to use Yamalube SS

bike's maintenance is right infront of town-hall bazaar...you can visit the place and ask anyone to show Hira/Chan's shop...they will show you...it looks to be a very simple workshop but, that guy(Either Hira Bhai or Chan Bhai, they are brothers) is by far the best mech for R15s in town...
                      hope it helps.

5100 is semi synthetic, 300v is fully synthetic. Grade of 5100 is 15W50 which is same as the company recommended yamalube.

That is infact very true, I freaked out at the time of my bike's first service when they told me that they have only semi synthetic oil for the r15. I called up a senior xbhp member and he told me to let them put whatever oil they are using as since they are the authorised station, they will have to assume responcibility if anything happens, luckily nothing did.

FYI, the bikes come with engine oil already inside them from factory to the showrooms. R15's comes with semi synthetic oil in them from the start. Even the first crank of the engine is done with semi synthetic oil.

If you've read the owner's manual, they've recommended use of Yamalube. Anyways if you're using any oil within the specified parameters of engine oil grades mentioned in the manual, the service centers will have to use that oil only.

There is a thread in the DIY section for this, if not, I'd make one the next time I change mine. Svc will put your oil in the bike, no issues. If anyone haggles, show them the owners manual and the grade mentioned there.

To go the DIY way is a personal choice, I LOVE working on my bike and hence try to do as much as possible myself. Also no-one will take care of someone else's bike as well as he'd take care of his own, so doing stuff yourself certainly has it's merits. But some don't like the added work and getting their hands dirty. If you really want to do it yourself then go ahead, it is a fairly easy job, and requires just one person.

And yes the whole oil needs to be drained which the svc neglects.

Don't go by word of mouth. FS oil is usefull only if you're pinning the throttle to the redline all the time, which, unless you're on a track, or you're on a suicide mission is hard to do. I feel Semisynthetic is enough for moderate to moderately high ripping. Add to that the increased cost of FS oil and it is also reported to burn/evaporate quite quickly when used in the R15. I have not used it yet, as I didnot think it was worth the extra bucks, hence I cannot vouch for the oil burning issues, that info has been collected from reading the net.

The company recommended grade is 20W40 or 20W50. How much of a difference does 15w40 and 20w40 make ?? Is it fine to use 15w40 on the R15 ??

A rule of thumb which I've heard from many is that you can reduce the first digit and increase the second. So on a bike which is specified to be run on 20W40, you can use 15W50.

And FYI, the company provided yamalube SS is also 15W50, so no issues there.
