Santa, if you have the operating temp (in Kelvin) and light output (in lumens) for both high and low beam of both silver star and night breaker.. please post them here...

Santa: How was ur ride.. where all you been to?
Did a ~2000 Km ride into ghats, no roads and rock climbing (check my siggy) on the R15. Average is about 41 kmpl (sedate driving... did not cross the ton mark more than a handful of times and barbarious roads/paths at some places!). Great bike... saved me from a serious incident, tires got cut kind of marks at some places (specially the front one)... did over 600 kms of ghats continuously in 5th or 4th gears without many shifts... did Kodachadri rock climbing mostly in 1st and did not go beyond 2nd (as we did this at night!).

Problems - the clutch has become very tight during the trip. It was tighter than usual before the start but didn't expect it to get so bad... Pass switch is not working now.. it was working even just before I reached home during the trip. Both front and rear wheels are moving very tight... u turn it and leave the wheel, it stopps suddenly in one or max 1 and half rotation... The fairing had a slight vibration before start when the guys adjusted the LHS RVM during the previous service... the sound became audiable now between 3-4k rpm.

The previous puncture I had on the rear tire was leaking a bit (not sure if it is the puncture or the valve (changed it as the alloy was bent). Bike is run 8.5K kms now and the tires seem to be good enough for another 4K of road use.

I think we can lookout for ur garage for a cheap tire replacement for road use!!!

Met a shop keeper who said he changed 7-8 R15's tires... some both front & rear to fatter ones... gotta check with him if he has one set of the stock ones available.

Im guessing the center groove remains pretty deep even after the edges have taken a beating...
Yup you guessed right. At least for normal road use, they're fine

Thats a tubeless tire issue, its common on the R15 if your pressure is on the low side. Run slightly higher pressures and it will seal tighter and hold (at the cost of reduced grip). I've converted my front to tube coz i got tired of worrying about it. If the pressure is droppnig too much then there could be a sealing issue, check that the tires were installed correctly, you might have to replace your tires or wheel.

This worked for me. As mentioned above, My rear alloy got bent and tire got a puncture before the alloy change... so, the puncture is sealed when the alloy was changed... now the air pressure in the rear tire was reducing drastically... got pissed of this and tried filling upto 40 PSI in the rear tire... after a few days the pressure reduction slowed down and the air doesn't go out completely.

Now it stays at 20-21 PSI even after 3-4 days. before trying higher pressure thing it used to come down to ~20 PSI in a day and would loose all the air in 2-3 days.

The air valve should be the culprit... when I was trying to check pressure, sometimes the valve gets stuck and keeps releasing the air until I spank it!

              • Guys... some useful information and may be something to discuss about. Some already know this stuff well and I guess many don't. Here it goes:

                1) Rear Alloy Change Estimation:
Rear Mag Wheel - Rs 3000.00
                Valve Neck - Rs 150.00
                Tire Replacement - Rs 150.00
                Labour - Rs 300

                Total Rs 3600

PS: Front Mag Wheel costs Rs 2400.00

                2) I have posted earlier about the headlight adjustment screws. Posting the same pic again.. this one is from RHS... that screw is openly available to adjust anytime...

I have found a total of 3 screws to adjust the headlight beam... (yes, each of them is moving the reflector in a different way and I need to seriously adjust my beam). Below is the pic from LHS... the RHS dome has the same screws too...

                3) Chain Lube

I remember some members posting here (you can find them in this thread... a few pages earlier) that OKS is not for O-ring chains and we have to use Motul... now, we started buying the OKS stuff after reading the recommendation in Hayabusa's manual... with specific numbers mentioned for O-ring chains. Also, this costs much less than Motul @ Rs 325 per can and my experience is that this is better than Motul as both the times I used Motul, after about 500 kms my chain was back to chick chick sound but not with OKS even after 700 kms. I agree that many more factors could have contributed to it... but still...

                Well, here are the photos...

                Links to data sheets:
OKS 451 - Adhesive Chain Lubricant Spray
OKS 2601 - Cleaner and Degreaser Spray

                ----------------------------------------
Now, I got a chance for another reading of the Manual and here are some glimpses of it... points I thought worth noting down and / or worth a discussion.

                4) Ignition Cut Off

Now, YAMAHA, where is the side stand cut-off switch? Is this a copy-paste from R125's manual?

                5) Spark Plug

Here the recommendation is only NGK. Some ppl have said in this thread that even Denso is listed as a recommendation. Also, DigiSlayer saw that his spark plug was Denso.. how many of you have seen your spark plug? what brand is it?

                6) Recommended Engine Oil - YamaLube SAE 20W40 API SJ JASO MA

                Oil Quantity

Since I am getting the oil filter cleaned in every service I am pouring in 1L... any ways, abt 30 ml will be left over in the bottle unless you drain it patiently.

Another shot of the same page covering the warning information:

                7) How to know it's time for changing brake pads? Here's the info:

                Front

                Rear

Have you noticed the R125's silencer in R15's manual?

Now, how many of you know that the brake pads do get a nice cleaning with the degreaser??? What you can do ur self is to spray the degreaser on the disc - both sides and rotate it and apply brakes. Mind you, the braking will be weak for a little while after this.

                8) Slack in Chain

                9) Cleaning & Lubricating the Chain... Sorry for poor lighting in the photo

                10) CO Levels checking & Government Regulations

                11) Yamaha Motors India Contact details

                12) Finally, an important one.... JOBS TO BE CARRIED OUT DURING SERVICE

Please note that this list is the same behind each service leaflet in the manual... I am sure that most SC guys are leaving aside many of the important checks.

                --------------------------------

                Two questions from my side.
                1) What size spanners would I need to make the chain adjustment myself?

The LHS (Chain side) is #17 I think. What number is it for the RHS?

                2) Where are you guys buying tires? Where are they available and how much do they cost? May be Killer is the best person for this Q?

Light sucks - even the Silver star, cant maintain 120 at night comfortably.
Its actually the small reflector to blame.
When taking corners in the ghats at night, the light falls somewhere(now dont tell me adjust position(all that done)) , Its all blind in the curve even with 60/55w.

                  • Delhi-Shimla-Delhi... 670kms.. 24hrs..

Recently i went to Shimla with 4 of my friends.
                    i tuk my R15, while the 4 of them shared 2 p150s.
                    it was an awesome trip.
we di'nt stayed in Shimla, instead came back a bit & went to Kasauli.
it was an amazing experience. ride in the hills was thrilling.
although i really wished that bus, truck & taxi drivers could have been more watchful, & at least not treated bikers or scooterist like some insects on roads. anyways, it was an exciting ride.
we enjoyed a lot. the view was beautiful.
then there were the awesome highways where our bikes were just eating out kms like we gulped delicious food at various dhabas we stopped at.
quite amazingly, my bike returned an amazing milleage.
entire trip was completed with a fuel cost of Rs. 750 for 670kms i did. plus, i was able to run the bike for 3 more days without re-fuelling her.
one more thing that i realized was the bike's ability to cope up with hardest. i unfortunately had a puncture in middle of journey. i dint found out about it when we had stopped on dhaba, as the bike lost air pressure while she was still. sadly, there was no one available to repair the puncture, further i dint had the puncture repair kit either.
to aggravate the suffering, most of the pumps we passed were out of air.
i had to ride her on flat tyre for at least 30-40kms, before i could finally inflate her tyre.
& i was able to maintain a decent 80-90kph on highway & keep up with my friends while on highway. we made a stop to recharge ourselves just before entering the hills. & as my bike came to a halt, it lost all its pressure again.
and sadly, it was early morning, so none of the pumps in highways had air. & i had to ride the bike without air on hills as well. was a bit hard early on, with bike feeling shaky. but then, i somehow got used to & reached shimla. there we rested, & so did our bikes.
was exciting, but tiring too. anyways, we started journey back, & i was able to get my bike filled with air finally & had a really pleasant ride downhill.

The manual says you need to press the clutch quickly&release slowly while changing gears. Sometimes my bike also jerks in 2nd/3rd gear when I release the clutch too fast, but responds fine when I do it slowly. Try releasing it slowly. As for the vibrations, do you have engine vibrations or body? Did you run her in properly? Do you redline most of the time? There are some others here who have the same issue due to redlining too...You can't use the whip on her&expect her to smile back at you, can you?
