There are totally three gaskets for the R3, two exhaust gaskets and one muffler gasket. An exhaust gasket making sounds are highly unlikely as they have no liberty to even move an inch. Now, though the muffler is secured by a band and a gasket. There will be barely perceptible vibrations where the muffler meets the exhaust pipe. A failed gasket would mean, leaking exhaust gases which would mean you'd hear a puffing/purring sound in tandem with the exhaust note, and it's quite prominent which is a clear sign you have a exhaust leak.
If you hear metallic pinging or a coin in a can kinda rattle, your internal muffler/cat con weld points could have undone themselves, and cause mild metallic pinging noises. If that's the case, you'd have to replace the entire muffler unfortunately, unless you can live with it. But for now, diagnoses matters.
I'd suggest you start off with the basics, check the "muffler gasket" by removing the muffler and see how it fares. Also, I'd suggest a homework if you can and have time, remove the muffler and wiggle it hard back and forth and observe if you hear anything weird, metallic pinging noises or any weird rattles. If all is great, check for muffler/exhaust pipe joining part for leaks by poring water on a cold exhaust and someone to mildly rev the bike so that if we have any leak, they show themselves as bubbles. This is to be done with an completely cold engine. A hot exhaust would vaporize the water.
Remember pour water where the exhaust pipe connects the muffler, not the entire exhaust pipe.
Keep your observations posted.
Cheers!
