        • @diehard : I am facing the same problems in starting. IT was rectified after servicing but resurfaced with 200 kms of riding. About que 1 , I don't know if its wrong or right. People also suggest not to use the engine kill switch to stop the bike. Again no idea why they say so

it's best if u start the bike in neutral. (it's safer too.)

keep you clutch depressed ALL the way if u decide to start in gear tho.

if in neutral... is OK to accelerate a bit. but you don't need to.

            here's a scenario...
imagine starting your bike in gear... WHILE squeezing down on the clutch lever...
AND accelerating. there are a few things that can go wrong here.
(one of those things is your FZ trying to yank ur arms off out of shoulders if the clutch isn't engaged properly. )

try this on a 150/220cc and u'll know why no on would recommend u try in on ur FZ1.

also... don't forget to let the bike idle for 90 seconds or so before u begin ur ride.
            .

This could be a battery issue too. I would do a battery health check first.

Giving gas during starter is not needed...but its epic fun for the bike starts with a loud boom
              My 2 cents in Bold.

Tell tale signs of bad fuel is Engine knocking and you will also feel loss of power.

Always fill petrol with the octane rating as recommended in the manual.

                  • Need an alternative to Stock AIR Filter

I have been told (and shown) that the stock air filter will get choked within 2000 kms of riding. The cost is 1066 . The filter is oil based and can not be cleaned. After the filter was replaced I could easily make out the bike was running smoother , was peppier and was sounding better too.

Can any one recommend an alternative to this?

                    • @Diehard : from the manual -

                      Engine stop switch “ / ” -

Set this switch to“ ” before starting the engine. Set this switch to“ ” to stop the engine in case of an emergency, such as when the vehicle overturns or when the throttle cable is stuck.

Darshan Tyres in Pune is a dealer for K&N. Check with him if you can get the filter from him.

AFAIK, K&N air filters are cleaned(pressurized air or water, not sure) and then oiled.

The K&N filter can be cleaned and reused plenty of times.

You can buy a cleaning kit also known as Filter Recharge Kit. It retails for some 1k odd bucks.

Instructions on cleaning your K&N Air Filter:

                              K&N Air Filter Cleaning Instructions

Never use compressed air to dry the filter. Allow it to dry naturally and only when its completely dry you should lube the filter with the K&N oil.

I would suggest you get the K&N oil in the squeeze bottle as it lasts much longer than the aerosol spray can.

Edit - it may look complicated but its very easy to clean the filter and is a lot of fun too.

Nikhil: The air filter life is more or less correct (about 2000-2500 kms). Have been experiencing the same myself.

The cost of the FZ1 air filter is a lot lesser than what it is for the R1, but running stock air filter has a lot of advantages:

                                1) It is proven to be better than the aftermarket filters in some cases.
                                2) If you go for an aftermarket air filter, you will most likely end up changing the air-fuel ratio on account of more air flowing in(leaner condition), because most aftermarket filters allow more air. If this happens, your engine will run hotter, and you will have to tune it back to the optimum AFR by buying and installing an aftermarket fuel management system.

The disadvantage is only one, which is that it cannot be re-used.

So I suggest you think about these factors and decide accordingly
