I like changing the oils at 1000-1200kms interval and same goes for servicing. That's the prime reason of me not buying Motul Synthetic or any 600-800Rs oil. Any oil between 250-300Rs is fine for me and doesnot drains my pocket even if I change it frequently. It was this time only I changed the oil at 600kms, as I wanted to maintain (each service-oil change) thingy in coordination.

even a mineral oil has a 1500-2000KMS of life.
    TRUE! to be Honest.
But, My philosophy is a little different. I think that maintaining a service interval(& oil interval) of 1000-1500kms keeps the bike healthy and the smoothness of the bike still remains same throughout 1000-1500kms interval. As long as my bike is runnig smooth, who cares about 500Rs invested(remember not wastage) at each 1500kms.

I like your way of thinking. Seems we are on the same wavelength. Even my P220 F used to get a fresh transfusion of mineral oil every 1000kms. After changing to Motul 5100 15W50, that oil was drained every 2000kms. Now on Motul 300V, let's see how long it lasts, could go till 2500kms with it, maybe 3000kms at the most.
The cost doesn't bother me much, nothing but the best care for my baby.

      • Hi guys,
Thanks for your fruitful replies. I really loved them!
Actually my brother has got P180 UG4 as a gift, thanks to the upcoming axing(read marriage!) season.
And incidentally, my neighbour who owns a P180UG4, had some serious starting problem though in the end it was discovered he was using 2T oil since the purchase.
So as we've got the bike, I need further advice from prodigies here.
How to handle her, run-in period advices, engine oil, few tricks n tweaks.
I shall be impossibly greatful to all of you!

        • Just Serviced

          Hello everyone..

Finally got my bike serviced (read second service) following are the brief summary in lieu of experience & service done:-
          a) Low mileage (AFR tuning) will check now how much mileage will achive.
          b) Check & adjusted Co level
          c) Engine Oli Flushing:- added Volvoline 4T 20W50 oil
          d) Gear shifts:- Now its crisp in handling
e)Rear suspension:-Lubricated , will get the effect after few km only
          f) Chain Tensioner tightened:- Chain lubricated
          g) Was getting feeling of rear bobling but no such timbling found

After normal service i m getting feeling of well satisfied for service (read for SVC guys) but i m getting feeling of low power in bike, in first 1-2 level of gears bike is not roaring with power infact its asking for more energy but on the other hand on 3-4 level its clears the crowd smoothly... i dont know why, i mean is it just the feeling only or really something i have missed grossly.

Any optimist comments are over welcomed

PS:- Thanks to Abhi for pushing me out for my bike service

Just service the bike at regular intervals of 2K and use good oil.

Great Himanshum. I am really Happy! for that. Finally, it's good to see you taking out some time for your 2nd GF too.
            A few points I did'nt understand were:
            1) How CO level was adjusted? And did you told them to adjust that or they were too caring and did that on their own.
            2) Which FLUSH did you used to flush engine?
            3) How to lubricate rear suspension?
            4) How one tighten's CHAIN TENSIONER?, I mean I have heard people say 'Tighten the chain', but, chain tensioner I am hearing that for the 1st time.

You mentioned about 1-2nd gear pick-up issue, Maybe that your bike is running so smooth that you never notice that pick-up. or You were running on a slight rich mixture before.

            Dhanya-wad!

              2) Which FLUSH did you used to flush engine? [I dont remeber the brand but they charge 60 bucks to clean the engine 'called as flushing']
              3) How to lubricate rear suspension? [ Oops i didnt meant, SVC guy tightened some nuts & sprayed some lubricant over the suspensions so as to free flow the suspension (Spring part) only. As i did'nt want to get the suspension opened & let them play with fork , gas ket etc.) as i beleive Bajaj can not compete suspension comfort level when compared to Honda. ]
              4) How one tighten's CHAIN TENSIONER?, I mean I have heard people say 'Tighten the chain', but, chain tensioner I am hearing that for the 1st time. [ ohh really, Dont have much time to explain you, will call u & locate the exact position if possible.. just for your quick reference i have pasted the info from Internet see how it works for IT peoples, "Chain tension is generally determined by the distance between the front and rear sprockets, and many bikes have index marks to help with alignment.

Bikes have differing chain adjustment mechanisms, and in general, the rear axle and wheel move forward or backward in order to set chain tension. Single-sided swingarms usually have an eccentric cam which sets the position of the rear axle; other more traditional designs feature hexagonal-headed inner nuts to move the axle, and an outer one to lock and unlock it.

When chain tension is properly set, it should be able to move up and down between approximately .75 and 1 inch at its loosest point.

Visit above link for more details with pics as well. please feel free to revert in case you require any more info on this. ]

                  • Hi Folks,

I have a P180 UG4 which I got about a month back. It has run for 1600 KMs so far and the First service was done at 800 KMs.

I have kept the RPM below 4000 till the first servicing and after that I have started to move up the RPM range and even touched 100 KMPH on few occassions.

I have a few questions, and I would really appreciate any help with these.

                    1. Is it ok to get the second servicing done at around 2000 KMs?

                    2. I am still with the SC oil, should I change it? If yes, then which oil should I use and where can I get in Pune? A proper address would help much.

(I have had a very big argument with the SC guys during first servicing because they put 15W50 oil inspite of telling them at least 15 times to use 20W50 oil. The bike is still running on 15W50, is this a very big problem?)

                    3. The bike feels noisy (Engine + Chain + every other part) and I do feel vibrations in the Foot pegs every now and then. What can I do to reduce this?

                    4. I am going on a very short trip this week-end (300 KMs both sides). What precautions I need to take and what the Bike needs to be prepared for the tour?

Any help would be much appreciated.

                      Welcome buddie,
don't rev above 5k now on until you touch 2000 km

Every one here does second servicing on 2000 km...it's a good idea

It's not a problem at all!! generally 15W50 is better suited here in Pune. I would even encourage you to use 10W50 in winters.
xxWyy : 'xx' means viscosity at lower temperature and 'yy' means viscosity at high temperature. You should be concerned about 'yy' instead because many SC put xxW40 in pulsar 180 which ruins engine life in long term.

Don't you never ever relay on engine oil given by SC. You can get better engine oil by yourself. I would suggest using motul semi-synthetic 5100 15W50 costs 400Rs. It has given me awesome results. Motul is the best engine oil available in India.

here is the contact of pune regional manger of motul 98 22 33 07 24.

Yes that's normal. Bike becomes rough by 2000 km but worry not that should get addressed in second servicing.
lube the chain every 200 km using a W90 oil.
There is something in the Foot pegs at the speed of ~52 but definitely not vibrations. It remains for some time when bike is new.
I used to use shell super fuel which addresses noise and vibs issue for me.

Just take short brakes every hour of driving and no matter what the situation is keep applying brakes often which help to align new brakes properly. And yes don't go above 65

                      • @NH4 Most of your queries are answered by LOckHrt already. Engine will feel harsh till 1st 5000kms. After that all noises will settle & vibrations will be minimal. For chain noise, clean chain every 400kms & lubricate it every 150kms by W90 gearoil. Also, get the Engine mount bolts tightened.

I am a bit relieved to know about the Engine Oil facts. I will surely get in touch with the Motul official for the info.

Can I clean and Lube the Chain myself? Or I need to go to the SC again?
I know what kind of Oil to use for lubing the chain, but what do I need to use for cleaning the chain?

About not revving the Bike past 5000 RPM... I know you are right and I know I should follow this rule upto 2000 KMs... but it is too damn difficult to control the urge of the Right Wrist Twist!!

Yes do it yourself. use only W90 oil for lubing the chain and you can use kerosene, tooth brush and piece of cloth for cleaning.

Put your bike on main stand, keep it running at idle in first gear and use that red thing (which used to pump engine oil in scooters) to lube.

                              1. One month after, its first servicing would be due. Which Engine oil to use? And I hope that the bike is already having engine oil, do you guys recommend Bajaj DTSI-10000 engine oil as said in manual? Where to get it?

                              2. Otherwise, if you advise another brand, kindly mention the brand name with xxWyy thing with cost(if possible!)

                              3. How to ensure a smooth run-in period and optimum slackness in tyres? What does 25-35mm slackness means?

                              More to come!

                              Shall be grateful for replies!

Oiling the chain while in gear is wrong method, one can surely hope for a disaster to happen which might grind one's fingers in sprockets.
