My query to fellow xbhp'ians is on 2 problems that I am seeing:

    1. Thinking of changing Spark plugs as sometimes bike misfires and just stops in between during starting or at low revvs. Although this can happen as its tuned to very low idle rpm 1100. should the spark plugs be changed? Service center guys wanted to changed it at this service itself(36 months) - but they were talking of changing a whole kit - spark plug - oil filter - some bush for self start which again will cost 1200 as a kit. Later asked to Bajaj Parts shop - he told that Rs79/- for spark plug (seriously isn't this cheap <confused>). Any suggestions on kit - what is this kit funda that khivraj Bajaj have in bangalore.
I think that service guy is fooling you. In winter and in cold start ups engine doesn't perform optimal and it's normal. Always start with chock pulled for about 30 seconds minimum. Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) might be rich in fuel and that could be the reason for misfiring.

There could be two reasons, one that bike wasn't parked on leveled ground and that's why you didn't see oil behind the glass. Or your bike was toppled by someone in your absence making the carb to overflow and that's why it didn't start straight away.

    • Upgraded to 180cc from 135cc!

Yesterday, 7th Jan 2013, I bought a new P180 UG 4. Previously, I owned P135LS and was quite satisfied with its performance. The only unsatisfying part was that after marriage I hesitate by taking it for long distances with pillion. So, this forced me to search for another stead. I sold my P135 (Feb-2010, 31K on odo, 52~55 kmpl) for 32K. Now, for me the budget was at max. 80K. My primary aim was to get more than 150cc bike with reliability, comfort for at least next 5 years with less maintenance costs. Now, within the range the options left with me were A180, P180, Karizma R, P220 (though last two were above my budget but still manageable).

Days were passing by until one day I thought of another option to buy a less used motorcycle. I searched Olx.in and immediate got two options; a used R15 (2010, 10K on odo, Final buying~73K, HR number) and two used P200ns (Both 2012 models with 1500 & 400 on odo, Final buying was settled~84k). As soon as, I shared my plans with my wife, her immediate response was like ‘When we have to spend that much amount, then why not a new bike?’ Now, it was needless to discuss comparison of P200/P180/Karizma R infront of her. She wasn’t agreeing to buy neither A180 nor Karizma R as she doesn’t like them. Though she liked P220 more, but due to lack of finances we settled for P180.

My regular mechanic at Ansari Bajaj, Jamia also recommended me for P180 as his reason was.. jitney me Honda ya Yamaha ka half engine ka kaam hoga sir utne me to pulsar ka full engine ka kaam ho jayega. Aur ye better bhi hai un dono se. aankh band kar ke le lijiye. So, finalized my P180 for 79K from Dewan Bajaj, Lajpat Nagar. As my P135’s number (3773) was a palindrome got the new number also a palindrome (2882).

      (+)ves:
      1) Feels good
      2) Raw power and low/mid range torque
      3) Stability
      4) Grunt of the engine
      5) Shockers/Suspension
      6) Tubeless tyres

      (-)ves:
      1) Are they RVM’s? Even my P135 has better RVM’s
      2) No Auto-choke function, it is boon in winters and I am used to it
      3) No footrest, in case of left sided sitting for ladies
      4) Question- Pulsar, Black color, yahi to thi na tumahre paas pehle bhi.. phir wahi kyun li
      5) Irritating self-canceling indicators
      6) No kick start, as an option

Overall the bike feels good. Now, following the running-in process religiously. Keeping it under 4K RPM until first service. Till now covered 150 km on odo..

      Pics will follow soon.
Suggest what else to take care of?

          Congrats for your new purchase.
About RVM, it's true and that's why I have put P135's RVM on my P180. It's a recommended upgrade.
About footrest, I'll say good riddance, doesn't make much of the difference. You won't miss it in future.
And you'll never need a kick to start the engine. Battery is quite powerful to crank engine in any circumstances.

          • I am having a Pulsar 180 UG-3 model. I was looking at the K&N website and found that they have a Air Filter which can befitted directly onto my bike without any modification. Now my question is does it make any diffference to the Performance of the bike.

Also what is the benefits of fitting Iridium Spark Plugs on my bike.

            • How can one distinguish between which oil is used for service at Bajaj SVC?

              Thanxx mate!

Recently during first service of my P180, they asked me which oil I want
              425~Bajaj, little brownish in color
              495~Agip, light yellow in color

I asked for which is the recommended oil for P180. The answer was 20-40 hi padta hai P180 me. Aapko jyada hai to 495 wala dalwaalo. So, to be on safer side i got 425 Bajaj DTS-i, which they poured from a drum.

Now, my apprehensions.. How to get sure they are using 20W50 mineral oil during first service? I cant service my bike from outside as it voids warranty.
This is too much from Bajaj SVC. I am facing this problem since I have P135. They always pour a litre of oil from some drum placed in SVC.

Kindly help, as bike is in run-in period(520Km; Got an early first service@410km), though not ripping her hard, keeping it under 60 kmph.
              Hope it will not harm!

              • That's why I always put engine oil myself.
Put Motul 5100 15W50 semi synthetic once you reach 2000 km on odo. It's the best oil to use for P180. 20W40 isn't really recommended for our bikes. You can checkout the top of that drum where the grad is mentioned.
You can get the engine oil changed at any roadside mechanic. It won't void the warranty as it's not considered as servicing. Next time you go for servicing, explicitly ask them not to change engine oil as you'll be doing it yourself(or outside mechanic). Changing engine oil is darn easy, you'll need a 14 number (or 15?) box spanner and a pot to collect old oil. That's it. Anyway that motul 5100 should cost around Rs 500 and will last for 5000 km.

Interesting.. I wonder why the P220 manual tells us to change both spark plugs and Air Filter at every 10k km.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Maybe because P220's air filter and spark plugs take a lot more beating. Anyway you know when they changed stickers on 220, 180 and 150 pulsars last time, they doubled service interval and changed check/replace/align intervals of many components.

I am aware of the bit in bold. My bike has a service interval of 2.5k km. Newer batches have a service interval of 5k km. But still, even the newer P220 manuals say the same thing.. Both Air Filter and Spark Plugs have to be changed every 10k km (as per schedule). And I don't buy the argument of "Spark Plugs taking a beating" since even most (Hero) Hondas come with a Spark Plug replacement interval of just 12k km (4 * services every 3k km). So you might want to reconfirm it lest you wish to get stranded due to an overused plug.

                          • Bike Stalling when engine is cold for initial 7-8kms...

                            Hi Folks.

My Pulsar 180 UG-4, has done 39,000kms and I got following things done at authorized service center "Bagga Link":
                            1. Clutch Set Changed
                            2. Timing Chain Changed
                            3. Tensioner Assembly Changed
                            4. Piston De-Carbonizing Done "After removing the head they scratched the piston head and removed all the carbon n washed it with petrol"
                            5. Carburetor overhaul/servicing done
                            6. Clutch Cable Changed

Now after all this my bike is stalling a lot when the engine is cold in the morning. Seems like it is not able to breath properly. But when after some 7-8kms it comes to normal but still this problem keep on coming in between on its own. I cannot understand weather if it is a problem with Valve Timing as Timing Chain is changed or Carburetor. I came to know from someone that this seems the problem with the valve timing as the missing is there when engine is cold...

I need a help on this guyz... Please throw some light if anyone had this kind of problem...

Time to play with Air Fuel Ratio(AFR)
Mark or memories the position of afr screw. Start turning it in one direction once in every morning by 180 degrees. If it gets worse revert back to orginal position next day and start turning it in other direction. Stop doing it once you find engine is running fluently.
PS. I'm assuming the initial idling is at least 1.1k. If it isn't, then your bike was stalling only because idling was set too low. Raise it to 1.1k, no need to tune your bike as said above. Easy peasy.

Hi everyone, i have been following this thread from the begining and i am very sad to see that many people have sold their 180's and got new rides:c I have a 27 month old pulsar 180 ug4 and i have done 14000(only) kms on it. I am very happy with my bike and have done some modifications to it too(i'll post the pics after my 12th board exams get over). The only thing i don't like is the intensity of the stock headlight. I have got a 55W bulb but the battery sign is always blinking and the horns sound like splendors :c . I have read about coil rewinding and i want to know whether p220 coil and can be used on my bike?
                                Peace
