Yes it was all hanging when i lifted the bike - SC mech said this will happen if i dont remove and clean the pads every 2k -they changed the pad and disk plate put new oil in it -for a long time after that incident i didnt touch my front brake at all - only used the rear brake - only recently i started using the front disk againOriginally posted by BloggingWheels View PostDisks BLEW off????

Was your front disk a bent or what before it blew off? I'm curious - can you please enlighten me on what/how it happened?

Rings are available and it is game by ASC for selling of bore kit. Since you will do the work in vellore, do a small home work. Get there early. Go to place where there are a lot of lathe workshop. Ask them where is the shop that sells pistons and rings for bikes. Go to them and ask rings for extreme/hunk/unicorn as all are same. Get GOETZE,MAHLE or USHA rings and fit. OE rings are available and let me ask my retailer friend tonite and i will post.Originally posted by sarbanoxley View PostOk reading your post made me change my mind - will not sell it - will fix it now.
The head mechanic said the same thing after opening the bore about 5 months back - he said the rings are "weak" and to come back to him after 4K when it will start to smoke - but its been more than 5K no smoke - back then i didnt believe him- only after you explained did i decide to take it back to him
.
So i have to check if the rings are manufactured after may 2012 right ? can you tell me how to check that ?
Also called some big SC's in chennai they all say the same thing - rings are not available separately - i have to buy the whole bore kit for Rs3100
.
Usually on the packet of rings the manufacturing date is printed.
There is nothing wrong for you to sell the bike. Just ring change will make the bike fly. If possible go for big bore kit from Joel as he provide stronger rings and they will last.Photo of my joy- http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/854067-post963.html-3.88 lac km cont....Ownership review of my joy- http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/832255-post608.html- slowly updating as and when getting time. No what I meant was how did it happen?? You just pressed the front brake lever and the disc shattered into pieces? (i interpret that the disc was 'blown' off jusy like a bomb blastOriginally posted by sarbanoxley View PostYes it was all hanging when i lifted the bike - SC mech said this will happen if i dont remove and clean the pads every 2k -they changed the pad and disk plate put new oil in it -for a long time after that incident i didnt touch my front brake at all - only used the rear brake - only recently i started using the front disk again

) And how does 'removal'/cleaning of pad help? Cleaning it required for lesser abrasion/friction and improve braking performance. Pistons are kept lubricated by topping up/changing of DOT3/4 brake oil. But how can a mechanical piece like that just blow off???!!
Sry dude, if I kept repeating the same thing. All I'm interested is in - HOW!

Disk blew offOriginally posted by sarbanoxley View Postthey charged me Rs 900 after my front disks blew off on the highway - narrowly escaped getting killed but rammed into this poor guy who was walking on the road and his hand and leg got injured bad
.
? How ? Was the brake pads low on friction material ? Was any work carried out on the disc earlier ?
Please let us know what exactly happened so that we can take necessary precautions to prevent that from happening.

sarbanoxley,
Check the caliper bolts (the fourth picture here) now, tighten it properly and forget it.

Please let us know what exactly happened so that we can take necessary precautions to prevent that from happening.Actually it happened at the worst of times - was coming from funeral of my family doctor - no sleep and crying for 2 days - i thought my life couldnt get much worse than this and then on the highway while returning home i had to avoid this truck so jammed the front real hard - and heard this sound from the front and BAAM the lever offered no resistance at all - i only had a fraction of time to react before i was smashed like a pumpkin - jammed the rear as hard as i could but at that speed it was not working well - so closed my eyes and went off to the side of the road - mowing down this innocent guy in the processOriginally posted by BloggingWheels View PostNo what I meant was how did it happen?? I was too concerned about the injured guy so didnt give much attention to the bike - only thing i knew at that time was the front disk failed - people helped me get the bike to SC - and the bill now that i remember was more than 1.5K - i think the disk alone cost me Rs 900 (sorry for the confusion) .

1) Front disk pad if not replaced in time can damage the plate so i change the pad every 8K just to be safe . I dont know how to take the pads and clean it myself so i just use water at high pressure to do the job . Rear i try to remove and clean it every 3KOriginally posted by itssaurabh.negi View PostHi Guys!!

.
2) Front disk oil is DOT3 i replace it every year dont count the kms - this time i am going to try DOT4 but dont know where to find one - motul has dot 4 brake fluid.
3)Air filter i just take it out myself and hit it hard on the floor repeatedly thats it - i saw this is what they do in SC they just tap it on the floor couple of times and put it back in
.
4)Tappets are tricky so dont touch it unless it needs the attention.
5)spark plug i never cleaned it but change it at 8-9K kms .
6) Cylinder carbon removal no idea mate .
also lube the chain every 500Kms with a good 90 grade oil.
going to buy this book and try to do little bit of servicing myself from now on - unlike you city boys i have to travel a lot to get anything done
:
ABC of servicing And Maintaining Your Honda Unicorn 9381576731: Book: REGOS (9789381576731) | Flipkart.com
the book says procedure to adjust the clutch /front and rear wheel servcing etc for the uni. - bet its the same procedure for the Xtreme - if some day sinbun writes a book like this for the xtreme i will buy that too
.
@sinbun today only i noticed white smoke when i revved the bike hard on neutral - will get the rings from unicorn and fix this once and for all this week .
