    Cheers,
I've done 34k + overall on my bike but I last replaced the sprocket set and chain in Jan 2012. Maximum I've ridden is 11K on the new sprocket set. I have this mechanic I've been going to for years whom. I trust completely when it comes to my bike. I will check with him. Problem is he is in Goregaon and I'm in Bandra. But I have a friend riding along with me just in case I need a tow.

Oh update : yesterday I managed to remove the front sprocket and fit it back in the correct grooves. But when I accelerate in first gear, the sprocket moves and slips off again. The inner teeth of the sprocket seem to have worn out. It shouldn't just be slipping out of the rod like that. I'm waiting for my friend to bring his FZ by tomorrow and compare the two to see what exactly is missing or worn out in mine.

I checked with my SVC head regarding the same. According to him there are two possibilities:

            1) Wrong installation. Most of the local mechanics are not well versed with a linkless chain so they end up fidgiting and then install it incorrectly.

            2) Fake product. He said it is quite an unusual case where a sprocket has just gone bust. So he is suspecting a fake make. Did you purchase it from an official Yamaha parts shop outlet or let the local mechanic hunt it for you? No offense but such things are quite common.

I would still recommend that you should get it checked at Kamla Yamaha. Unless they start working on it they will not charge you just for an inspection. If you can tow it back to goregaon, Sewree workshop is much more closeby. I know I am starting to sound like a promoter of the SVC but just so that over 2 years they have provided me the best service without any complaints hence, would like to pass on the benefit.

Possible. Keep an eye on the engine oil level and the exhaust for any visible smoke. As mentioned by Abhijitkn, if you see blue coloured fumes coming out of exhaust then oil is leaking inside the combustion chamber.

I am finding the image bit difficult to read.. A bit blurry. Anyways let an SVC guy have a look at it. 33 kmpl is failrly low and if it is showing a downward trend then I believe a good inspection shall reveal the root cause of the problem.

Will do. Never paid much attention to the exhaust. Will start monitoring now. Although I do check the engine oil level frequently and so far I've not see any drop in the oil level. The oil also looks quite clean with very little impurities in it. Using Motul 3000 4T 20W40 till today since the first service at 1K odo.

So do you suggest I dont go for SS/FS oil now and continue with mineral oil?
My bike is already in the SVC for the 3rd service. Asked them not to change the oil and I'll bring the oil myself when I come for delivery and they can change it then. Based on your inputs I'll decide which oil to buy.

Mentioned it while giving the bike for service today morn. However i couldn't explain in detail. So just told them I think that the engine is running rich and that the throttle response is sluggish and mileage is very low.
Actually was in the process of explaining them but then there was a mishap with a gentleman on a scooty right in front of the SVC.
Quite a bad fall and slide on the road and everyone in front of the SVC including me went over to assist him. (Poor man was in terrible shock. Again stresses the importance of riding safely!! Lucky there wasn't heavy traffic behind him at that time.)
By the time we were back it was getting too late for office and thus had to just explain him about sluggish response and low mileage.

Will go back to collect the bike in the evening and check if the engine feels any better.
              Will update here.

Actually its the other way around. A overly rich mixture will wash the oil off the bore/s and end up diluting the oil, breaking it down much faster resulting in more frequent oil changes.

Oh... the mixture seems to be the root cause of the problems then?

Could it be that the rich mixture is diluting the oil on my bore and because of that the piston rings are enduring more friction and thus wearing out as evidenced by the slight presence of oil on the spark plug??
(I might be drawing completely baseless conclusions here so please correct me if its not right )

Mineral oil is ok.. But better protection of the engine is with SS/FS oil. You can look at Motul 7100 FS 20W 50 which costs around 700 bucks INR and there have been good reports flowing in here and also at SVC. Do the change, ask the SVC to check the condition of the air filter, replace if necessary, condition of the spark plug and also keep. The valve clearences as per the service manual.

I personally feel wrong AFR is the culprit however a proper inspection by the SVC guys can give you a better idea.

@Mik: would you recommend Arijit opening up the engine and inspecting the valves and the piston rings, cylinder to be inspected for scuffing or unusual spots or do a compression test to get answers?

@All: My ride will be soon due for her service. The problems that I am facing with her:

                    1) At times, she would stop responding to throttle input unless throttled hard. So I am suspecting that the carb needs to undergo another round of inspection and most likely the plastic butterfly valve cap (don't remember the acutal name) has gone bust like it happened with rider RAK.

                    2) There is a significant increase of high pitched ringing noise from the engine which is a clear indicator of valves to be tightened as per the clearences required.

                    3) With the stock exhaust currently doing duty I can immediately feel the difference in terms of reduction in top end performance and the ride now struggling to cross 85 kmph limit.

I am currently waiting for Joel to ship me the two key components: 29mm CV Carb and also a new engine head ported by RC for the 182cc big bore upgrade. So if I can get hold of it within the next 2-3 weeks then will get everything swapped, including junking the old BS26 carburetor and also installing new set of valves to compliment the set up. If for any reason Joel, RC delays in the shipment of the goodies then my ride is going for her service regardless.

I am anxiously waiting to feel the add on power bump between my legs!!

                    Cheers,

Since FZ doesn't come with integrated digital clock in the console it's really difficult to see time during long rides from wrist watch coz it rotates downwards and jacket & gloves encloses it always.
So I'm looking for digital watch with following features:
                        1. Big display with light
                        2. Water proof
                        3. Easy instalment in handlebar or console
please help if you have tried.

I've seen someone post up instruction on attaching a watch (without its straps) onto the speedo panel on xbhp.
                        Hi,
Sorry I could not reply earlier since I wanted to finish the set up & test it a bit before I can reply.
I was also looking for the clock since few days. Search automobile shops but all of them were for cars. I was also looking for a volt meter, the ones I found were suitable for cars, not for motorcycle.
The one I liked the most is from Deal Extreme website. Don't know if it is available in India, give it a try before you order.
It is 3.8" LCD Digital Clock with In/Outside Thermometer + Voltage Measuring Bar. There is another variant which has calendar as well. It reads temperature max to 70 degrees Celsius & when the temperature is less than zero it shows ice icon. It has inside & outside temperature measuring gauges. One sensor is with the module & the other sensor I placed near the engine (not to close) with the help of wire, which comes with it. You can change the temperature unit to Fahrenheit if you want. Also you can show the time in 24 hrs or 12 hour (AM/PM) format.
It is little long, but I had something in my mind so wanted to give it a try. It has got a back-light (orange & blue) as well which turns on automatically with 12v supply. You can switch the back light off if you want. Also there is light indicator which is green, if everything is fine & turns red if voltage is < 12 & > 15.
It took 15 days for me to receive it after it was shipped. I made an acrylic box (10mm thick) and thermocol to make it theft, weather & shock proof & mounted it with the handlebar mounting brackets and couple of clamps. I wanted to use the supply from the ignition but then it was little risky since it directly supplies to CDI unit and also I had to use the engine kill switch, so I took the supply under the tank from the left side. There are 2 connectors white & black, I choose black one because it has normal connector, while the white one is a special connector (do not wanted to mess with it). Now with the key turn towards ignition on, I get the volt reading as well as back-light.
It works well for me, even with the tank bag. Doesn't blocks the console for my height. The clamps can be bend back & forth to adjust.
The pictures are as attached: 1. Supply at CDI Unit, 2. Supply under the tank 3. & 4. Indicator 5. From side
Thanks to Mike & Raneet for the help with electricals.
If you want to buy, there is another unit with similar functions (may be better quality) , but price is little high, around ~$40, also available in US not in India or Dealextreme. For that unit see the review here.

                        • To reiterate the discussion about engine oil, is changing the Engine oil from Yamalube to Shell Advance Ultra is advisable.

Shell petrol bunk guys tells me that Shell Advance Ultra is perfectly fine for FZS and R15. However, the oil grade itself is different between the two.

Please throw light on this query to novice users like me.

Also, mileage decreased drastically from 48 to 33 after the last service and the pulling power of the bike. Bike is smooth in higher speeds, however very very sluggish in lower gear. Please advice guys.

                          • The first service of my bike was completed. Now I can hear a Tuk Tuk sound while moving the back wheel of the bike
in centre stand. Also I can see that top of the chain is getting wear away. Any sugessions please.

Bikes are always passionate to me. I started bike riding since i was in 9th standard! Initially I had passion pro(self, alloy) which had a great time with it. Its mileage was one of its USP's Though looks and performance were too outdated. I always wanted to get a bike which should have power to looks ratio. Mileage doesn't matters most. So, it was my birthday and I need a bike which should match my requirements. After lots of efforts and genuine reasons, My dad finally accepted to get down a new bike. So, my requirements were:

                              1. looks
                              2. good performance in city.
                              3. handling should be breeze.
                              4. low maintenance.
                              5. mileage( of course i had passion pro so i became like mileage-conscious). but can be tolerable.

                              So Here are my Verdict:
As i needed a bike for city ride, I decided to go with 150cc bikes and with a maximum budget of 85k.

                              Bajaj Pulsar 150:
Great performance and mileage, cheap spare parts. But evicted because of poor sales service network in Hyderabad, Less resale value and poor plastic parts(I don't mean to hurt anyone).

                              Honda Unicorn:
Great after sales service, great usability in city, good performance, handling, mileage. But poor looks and too old as a bike(looks are for an old man).

                              Honda Unicorn Dazzler:
Same as its sibling cb unicorn. But removed from my list(though many recommended) but waiting period was an issue.

                              Tvs Apache 160:
Good performance, good mileage, cheaper spare parts, a very VFM bike. But removed it immediately due to its looks(headlights were just yakk) loved those angel lights( LED day time lights). Also, it had several vibration issues at 50-60 speeds and uncomfortable seats. And after sale service in hyderabad is just like buying the bike from showroom and servicing is done at a local road mechanic shop ( this was my friends opinion). So, completely removed from list.

I already evicted hero motocorp bikes as I already own their product and wanted to try some other brand.

                              Yamaha FZ-S:

Great bike, Great looks,Great performance in city,Great service chain network. This bike has checked all boxes in my list.

                              Owner-ship report:
Me and my dad went to yamaha showroom for a glance of the bike. I already chose the color (i.e., black cypher green).Had a talk with the dealer and gave the enclosure of price list to us which was 83,560/- OTR. and asked us to bring all the required documents.

After a week, We went to showroom again with all required documents. To my surprise there was an limited edition blue color FZ-S. I just asked my dad to look at the limited edition bike. He too was pleased and we both decided to go with it. Asked dealer, the total amount of limited edition and it was 1500/- more over ordinary FZ-S. So, The final decision we chose was the limited edition fz-s. Payed the amount and dealer asked us to come in evening for delivery. The total amount was 85,060/-OTR. Filled 1 litre petrol by them and left for home. Here are some pro's and con's according to my opinion and experience.
                              Pro's:
Great handling due to its wider tyres.
Good performance in city(due to its 13.7nm torque).
Ofcourse great looks which any other 150cc bikes won't offer.
                              Superior digital console.
Smooth ride(as if you are riding a honda bike).
                              Con's:
Gets too dirty when water comes in contact.
You can here chain sound more than engine sound.
Mileage would be a matter(I can't complain on it). Coz of tyre and torque
Wider and flat tyre which increases wear and tear of tyre in future.

Limited Edition adds some customized paint jobs:
                              Body-colored midship muffler
                              Body-colored Rims
                              Body-colored Side body panels
                              Body colored headlights.
                              Gold colored disc calliper
limited edition sticker and a logo
                              body graphics.
                              Let pictures do the talking
Parvez's Topic Approved and merged here.

Congratulations Parvez for your new limited edition ride. There is already this thread existing for FZ owners, hence it is merged here. All the best.
