  • Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S

    Hi bikers,

i'm having white smoke from the past 2 days which started with the engine oil change. The Mechanic guy said that my bike bore was damaged and has to be replaced.
Before the engine oil change i didn't had any smoke issues.

I'm having same performance before and now with the same mileage 40-42.

And he asked me to sell my bike because from now my bike will be getting frequent repairs and visits to Service centers.

Why i am getting white smoke?

Please suggest a good way to get my bike repaired.

Kindly,Suggest me a good mechanic in Hyderabad to get this work done.

Which engine oil you have used and what is the odo reading. And don't listen to him there is remedy for everything.

Of course you can. Just ensure you ride in the correct gears as much as possible. If this is your first time riding on the hills, then avoid taking a pillion IMHO.

Riding around the hills is a unique but highly rewarding experience as sharp corners /hairpin bends with changing elevation will have to tackled along with two way traffic. So be prepared and most importantly, don't rush it.

I want to buy a Yamaha FZ but I'm torn between FZ 16 and FZ FI v 2.0 (ahhh even the name is so misleading). I like the original FZ 16 because of good opinions and the specs. However, some suggested me that FZ FI or FZ S are better for its fuel injection and all. I am a bit hesitant about the FI versions because they don't have kickstart, have split seats, reduced weight, low engine displacement, low power output etc..

                FZ 16
                Looks (opinions may vary)
                more hp
                lesser FE

                FZsFi
fuel injection - responsive engine and no power loss, spread across the rev band
less hp (weight & FI compensates)
                slightly more FE
                Comparatively sad looks (subjective)

Both bikes feel the same. The power difference is nil or negligible in experience. The V2 feels slightly better because of the engine response & weight, otherwise it's the same. You get more FE in V2 (atleast 8-10 kmpl more). The handling is equivalent, and the ride comfort may be slightly better in V2. Honestly, after spending long hours on the saddle, the V2 also is uncomfortable.

Rest assured, the Yamaha reliability is intact - you can keep abusing the bike. And the kick start will not make any difference; just keep a tab on the battery life. V2 cranks on the first push of the button very single time, even after long breaks or unfavorable weather. Whereas FZ16 needs a warm-up at times.

I have ridden both bikes extensively, and aforementioned points mostly summarizes the difference.

Thank you buddy. That was really helpful! Just the kind of advice I was expecting and you have spent a lot of time with both bikes too. I'm usually skeptical about the newer version of a product especially when the original version was a successful and well proven. I need to think it over and decide..

haha yamaha reliability is intact. The quality is totally depends upon your luck and from which batch you get the bike. Today it's not the same yamaha, which you can trust blindly. Even yamaha svc echanics admits that yamaha has worst quality control now. Honda is the company no matter how much you abuse them they stand with you for long. But honda has spare part problem. Yamaha is little bit enthusiastic about their accessories and other things. If you buy yamaha once it is quite difficult to shift any other company. But if someone give me choice now i will definitely go for honda.
                    Just an opinion.

But a lot of new FZ16s are out on the street these days. If the quality is so bad, people would buy?

Quality of Yamaha bikes currently is as good as Honda if not better. I know of multiple Honda owners who keep cursing the bad quality of parts, switch gear and service etc. Yet, the Japanese manufacturers are still streets ahead of their Indian counterparts when it comes to quality control. The Fz is a super reliable, proven motorcycle that dominated its segment for a long time.

I wouldn't say that. Honda's have more problems these days. The same applies to Honda, depends on which batch you get. Hondas start smoking quite early, around 30-40k from what I've noticed. The Honda quality of pre 2007 is no longer there. My bike was an example. Of late most companies seem to be paying less attention to quality control.

You are totally wrong bro. Of all the bike manufacturers in india i consider yamaha the most reliable one. Though its my personal opinion based on my own experience.

I had first generatin fz which colcked 86k kms on the stock engine and was still going strong.
Sold that one and got another fz (this too first gen) with 20 k kms on the odo(was stored for long period) and happily riding it.
I have experience with YBR 110 which is almost 5 years old severly abused( used for hilly offroad riding) and still is going nice and smooth.

On the other hand Unicorn which belongs to my cousin had to go engine overhaul just after 43k kms and i have seen various shine similar to the age of our YBR which seem to be at the end of their age ( they are abused too).

I know one thing honda is best at- MILEAGE.

There are many bajaj pulsar 150 on roads, it doesn't mean they are good.
I have fzs and had really bad experience with it and still bought ray zr in 2016, still bad luck, lots of vibration, sounds which can't be detected and started rusting little bit. Its just he aura of yamaha that makes you stick with them no matter how poor their quality is.

I can say the same for yamaha, the earlier model of fzs with single wire carburetor was amazing. My brothers fz16 is still intact and clocked 40k + kms not even clutch wire has changed, chain set and rear tyre is the only thing that is changed. Mine started giving off white smoke after the second service. The same goes with brother in law's fazer it started giving of smoke after 19k kms but he rode fazer very rough. My friends never services his bike regularly always around 5000 to 6000 kms still running great and he uses sunny deols oil don't remember the name of the oil. I'm still facing some problems with fzs which even yamaha svc mechanics can't recognize. And while i'm still talking now they are sending faulty parts also, i got new chain set which had problem from the first day. And yamaha svc are coward enough to accept that. So in my opinion, it's totaly depend on your luck what you get crap or some Japanese quality. I not saying yamaha is poor it is yamaha india that is poor. Even when i talked to yamaha's Delhi's area manager it got clear why yamaha's quality decreasing. They are hiring idiots.

Changed the front fork seal and oil on both the forks. Cost was Rs. 1158, including labour.

The oil used was from Endurance. Don't know which grade. It wasn't mentioned on the bottle.

                                Ride safe and have fun.
