Didn't knew that, will check out the manual for further details. I'm sure they must have notified if there is a buil-in wear indicator in tyres

My FZ makes a weird 'tak-tak' sound from the front shock absorbers or front forks everytime i hit a slight bump on a road while travelling at speeds above 40 kmph.. bigger the pothole, greater the sound is. I was worried that someting might have broken down from within so made a Yamaha mechanic to take a short ride & he couldn't figure out the problem. Asked for suggestions from another local mechanic & he said I need to replace my 'Cone-Set' which is making the tak tak sound every time i bump into a pothole.. Anyone faced the similar issue??
You may not have to replace the Cone set but a through adjustment should suffice. Take it to your SVC and they should be able to take care of it! Many of us here have faced that Tak Tak noise issue and have had it rectified. It should be a simple fix.

    • Tyre wear indicators are marked on the side wall of the tyres. The noise is from the cone set. First try and get the steering stem half nut tightened, see if that helps. Other solution is to replace only. Better the sooner, because if the cone gets cut, then its expensive, else only the racer balls can be changed.

SVC guys in my area are pure idiots yaar, they realy have no clue what is wrong. Anyways I'll try with another SVC if they can sort it out.

I wasnt getting a tak tak sound but my handlebar wasnt free (I mean from the centre position, it was not able to fall to the left side completely when let free, as opposed to the right, where a slight push from centre made the handlebar fall all the way to the right) and he adjusted the screw thing in the middle of the handlebar - the one that connects handlebar set to the forks. The steering agility became like a new bike, and I was left wondering wtf was I driving for the last couple of months!

Getting the cone set replaced wont hurt obv but other things can be tried before getting it replaced, IMO.
Hmmm.. My handlebars are free on both the sides bro, I doubt if my problem is same as yours. But yeah you are right, cone set replacement may not be afterall the prime requirement.

Bro, the SVC guys in my area are pure loots.. They would'nt even try to repair/adjust anything that is wrong with our bikes, they'll simply ask us to replace it instead. Is it advisable to check out the cone set & adjust it through a local mechanic instead? I mean is it really a tricky job to open up the handlebars/fork etc & adjust it accordingly? Can a local mechanic take care of the issue or I reqiure expertise of Yamaha SVC guys?

Oh, can you be more descriptive about which nut we are talking about? i mean where is this steering stem half nut located? I'll definitely try to tighten it myself 1st before taking the bike to any mechanics.

@all : What shall be the estimated cost of replacing the cone set? I was quoted around rs 800/- just for cone set & labour work extra

        • Finally my FZ 16 completed 550 days and 10000kms.!!!.

          Main pros I found.
          1. The style.
          2. Good seating for the rider only. (although long rides can be a bit pain in the ....).
          3. Center of gravity and balance: Great. Not even 1 scratch or accident.!.( Although countless cases that could have led to the above)..
          4. Easy to ride in the busy city.
          5. Mileage.. though not in the league of other 150cc bikes, the fuel efficiency I have obtained till now calculating the total KM ran and total fuel fed (right from day 1.) is around 45.67kmpl...... (presently around 46-48).
          7. Everything else....

          The cons
          1. Mileage in the age of ever increasing fuel cost, I now prefer public transportation for most of the time....
          2. Rear seat. Ya most of them complain about it.
          3. The paint quality: Lots of marks of dress etc.. on the tank. SVC guys told that the paint quality is bad and should do a repaint. Even tried wax polish but no use...
          4. The size : Feels a bit puny compared to the others.
          5. Instrument cluster : yeah an analogue tachometer would have been nice.
          6. Kicker : Around 1-2 times, I was tensed as the starter was not working.....but managed after many times on the choke. Still would be confident with a kicker.

Above all, I think this is the best bike ever and hope to ride till 100000 km....

          • Small trip log

            Hi all,

I did a small trip to Alibaug, Kashid & Murud Janjira and back to Mumbai last Sunday with a pillion and did extensive cornering, tests on me bike, riding gear: Scoyco JK-17 jacket and Scoyco Bionic shin guards, all together totaling 350 kms coz of few stupid wrong turns and going through Thane to Panvel instead of Chembur route.

All i can say is that this bike is an absolute joy to ride on the corners. Through Karnala Bird sanctuary roads i was able to hit 70s+ and do corners at the same speed without feeling loss of grip in the rear.

The only thing which i desperately wished was 'more power' at the top end once i was on the highway. As the bike reaches 95+ kmph, it took really a long time to go any faster and the engine did felt stressed to go beyond 95+ with pillion load at the back. May be i am asking too much from me 150cc FZ!!

When I hit full throttle on a long open stretch and the bike did manage to hit 106 kmph(on speedo) with a pillion and that too without crouching or going downhill but only after covering a distance of over a kilometer probably.

After 7,500 kms on the ODO the rear drum brake is slowly showing signs of wearing out although the front brake is absolutely good as new.

CONs: REAR SEAT!!! Extremely UNCOMFORTABLE for the pillion rider!! So my advice learn to say no to a pillion rider or provide them a disclaimer of rear bum going numb after an hour or two.

Throughout this small trip, FZ never showed any signs of overheating nor did i witness any drop in performance. I guess Motul Mineral oil is doing its magic keeping the engine temps well under control.

On the FE part: Not something I am bothered about!! But the bike even after constant thrashing (read all the time above 7.7 - 8.5k rpms) on the highway and speeds of excess 90+kmph gave me a healthy 38 kmpl return. i am quite impressed!!

With just 1000 kms more left till i hit my 4th service, i will provide a full report on any small tit bit replacements like probably rear drums once i go ahead with the service.

My Scoyco Riding Gear performed really well. Although at speeds of below 40Ks, the jacket did feel a bit uncomfortable with the internal temps going a bit high. Now the jacket is covered up with a layer of dust hence, a nice luke warm water treatment should make it look as good as new.

            Cheers

              WTF
The FZ may not be the biggest bike around but it sure does give the big feeling. Those insanely fat tyres, the oversized tank cover and the wide handlebar does give a big feeling.

you can get a kicker installed anytime you want... and regarding the starts there is an option of jump start in the bike... put the bike on central stand, put it in 5th gear and jerk the rear wheel in the direction of the motion that will also start the bike...

Was going thru the posts & got some basic doubts

                  2. Anybody around here from mysore, Know some good mechanics so that I can make him check my bike? Is the "Scarlet" dealer servicing Good here?
                  3. Comments about what is main difference i need to expect with this bike and what I should be careful about the bike?

Please free to correct me. I am a newbie to the forum.

Just giving an example ... 1 svc suggested opening up the whole arrangement and troubleshooting, and another svc got it done in 10 mins.

                        Thanks Arya,

I feel a power loss in high gears but rides fine and superb in 45 -75 range.
Is this normal? I am not complaining, For a guy who just upgraded from 100cc bike. I am just curious?

Mine is a second hand bike Just got it last week. The earlier owner was a lazy guy and might be the reason why headlight is out of focus, Can u guys tell me how i can adjust it?

yeah the loss in power in the higher rpms is normal as fz is a streetfighter so most of its power is in the low and the mid range of rpms....

for adjusting the focus there is a screw beneath the headlight... and by focus i am assuming that your beam ig either going upwards or downwards...

P.S: I am also riding a passion plus (rented) from the past couple of days and I sure miss my monster (gone home) like anything.....

Erm you can go the Semi Synth or Full Synth way.. although, Motul Mineral Oil 20X40 is more than sufficient to handle hardcore thrashing and keep engine temps well under control... unless you are looking at track days.. Standard mineral oil will cost you only 224 bucks and the changing interval is every 3000kms or 170 days i think....

                                cheers
