Yeah, there is some speed wobble..not on highways, but on the Hooghly Bridge, when the wind was blowing from the right side..I was with pillion, still my Fazer was wobbling quite a bit.Was at low speed,so found it quite funny.I can imagine how scary it is when at high-speeds.

I ride atleast 30% of my kilometers in Highway (Durgapur Express Way, from Kolkata till Asansol). I have been riding in this route for the last 14years. so i know everything about this road, traffic behaviour, people behaviour, even cattle behaviour..... and most importantly the wind Directions and riding behind a Volvo Bus and what wind disturbance it creats. Wrote all these to make u understand how well i know these roads, nothing else.
My question is, this FZs does something which i didnt expect it to do. I ride @ max speed always thats 110kmph(speedometer reading) with the wind 125, 135kmph with the Pulsar 220Fi (speedometer reading), and 122 with this FZs (speedometer reading), so im very much use to high speed riding, its downside etc.... This bike has a problem, Its about Wind Turbulence at High speed. When ur with the wind (wind and your riding direction are same), there is no problem atall, when its sideways wind (wind flowing from side, left to right or right to left), every bike has some problem, so no extra problem with this bike also. But once ur against the wind, it becomes a hell of a ride. Speed seem to fall too much, but thats okay.... sometime that does happen if its flowing too fast. But the bike also starts to Speed Wobble Speed wobble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its not too extreme, but u cant ride it @ 100+kmph, thats a peety.... right speed seem to be anywhere between 65-85. I have riden wind 125 in the same stretch of road @ more than 100kmph without getting too worried about Speed wobble, leave alone the Pulsar 220fi, Pulsar didnt had any of these problem what so ever. This bike iis preety tight everywhere, except this Speed wobbles that happens, 'only at high way".
I have checked my Tyre pressure as well as Tyre Condition, The Handle Bar etc.... every thing is nice and okay.... so no real problem form the parts of this bike.
Has anyone noted these things in FZs...?? You guys have ridden a lot of this bike and in various condition as well....... so some one should have noticed it... or its some problem with my bike...(which i dont think is).

I am some one who is more of a Average Kmph Rider, rather than a Top Speed Ride. Meaning I dont like my Top Speed to be very far off from my average Speed (for Highway rides). If I am plannning for a 90kmph average speed, then Top speed of 120-115 is alright.... if I am planning for a average speed of 75kmph, then I wont go over 90-100. My phylosopy of bike riding is ride as fast as u need to.... no point in 5min of glory, and 5 months in hospital. I have riden for more than 14yrs now, and everytime i get out with my bike, i atleast get 90-100kmph speed, everyday for the last 14 yrs.... u see, but never had a big accedent, only once i fell from my bike, and thats also because some person in a bicycle was drunk..!! All in all, my experience with this Yamaha, my first Yamaha... is preety good. Planning to take it for a long ride .... from kolkata to Darjeeling sikkim Kolkata. if it does well in this, its time for a south india trip with this bike.

Please guys tell me from your experience, whether u had speed wobbles in your bike or not....!!!!
Thanks a Lot for reading my Motorcycle dairy....!!!! bye.
Yeah man. It's there as you said after 100 km/hr but I don't think we can ride her more than 100km/hr for long time. Every engine has its consistency and what I feel is FZ-s safe tolerance lies in 5-6 rpm it means maximum 75-80 km/hr (it just my guess work by experience). A short bursts of redlining for any overtaking or dragging can de done but this should not be for long time. If you want greater consistency then you must get your bike joelled with 180cc and that's what I wanna do it next month.

Shvv is very well experienced and I think he will throw much light on this matter but I don't think you can belt the babe to the maximum for very long time.

Is there any place which is safe enough to do this 'maximum' thing for a very long time? Incredible India!

When we ride the bike in Flyovers or High Bridge, wind tends to be more gusty, and since bridges cross the river at 90 degree angle, u get the maximum wind turbulence over there. But at low speed if your bike starts to wobble, then its not that great a news.. (it seem to a Yamaha Fz/Fazer problem)
Actually, riding with pillion or riding single, dosent affect speed wobble much ........ cause wobble is caused when front wheel starts to move from side to side, while the rear of the bike still stays at one place (grounded). If the wobble gets too much, then it tends to throw the whole of the bike..

          • On the contrary,I found the wind hitting the mid part of my Fazer rather than the front wheel. It was like the wind was pushing the bike to the left. Not sure as I was at slow speeds.

Its surprising to see this post.. May be because you own a FZs thats why. I never felt any wind pushing, wobble etc on my fazer at high speeds until I apply the brakes. Though I have never taken it above 106 km/hr. But I find it very well grounded even on corners at high speeds. The problem at high speeds is that you encounter some up-down movement/wobble but that is owing to irregular roads and suspension reaction on those irregularities. I think if you set the rear suspension to stiffer setting may be you can avoid this situation - Just a guess.

You have a long way to go. We have many roads all over the country where you can ride for any speeds you like. Remembering Ayazuddin (Son of former cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin) who died trying to break his record 220 km/hr speed, 20 kms from my house. I think 120km/hr was safely doable on that road!

              • Hi,
personally i am not in favour of riding too aggressive on a public highway coz no matter how much of a safe rider you think you are.. there are others who are stupid enough to suddenly brake and turn without warning.. so riding close to 120 kmph is not something i would advise on indian road unless the particular stretch has proper barricades and no stupid villagers who cross the road being in a different dreamworld of their own. Donot jeopardise your safety and others. FZ/Fazer engine is more comfortable in the speeds of 85-90+ kmph..

if one is running her hard on highways above 105+ kmph.. check the oil level at constant intervals.. at such high speed runs the engine may consume engine oil faster than under city riding conditions which is normal. i would not recommend pinning the engine to red line for extremely long distances or else the engine's life will get reduced quite fast.

The whole idea behind me going for RC180 power up kits are to get rid off the primary problems which we all FZ/Fazer owners face when riding on highways:
                1) Engine getting stressed.
                2) lack of punch post 85-90 kmph.

With a bump of 5-6 bhp pushing the overall power output to 19-20 bhp in the engine and around 17-18 bhp transferred at the rear wheel(Will verify with G Tech Data Logger Pro), aided by 15T front sprocket mod; i recon my ride's top end will be close to 140 kmph on the speedo. However, that doesnot mean that i would keep her pinned at those speeds all the time . The whole agenda of going behind the extra horses is to have enough power in hand to accelerate ahead fast when needed. I would ideally keep her in the band of 90 kmph on the highway and if and when the situation demands will push her to 120-130 at the flick of the right hand.

                Cheers,

Yeah I have gone on long rides and never ever felt it except on the bridge, while I was at a slow speed. I meant to say, where to overspeed without getting caught by cops. Never knew that Ayazuddin died while trying to break his own record.

True that... i've kept my bike constantly at 95kmph on NICE road in Bangalore. Never experienced any buffeting... even on turns where the road surface was not even the bike felt firmly planted to the road...

Yes... My friend was riding my bike and tried really hard to take it to 100... the bike didnt reach even after trying for a long time... max 97kmph... maybe it will reach after 2nd service

                    • ^^ I completed my run-in on the highway and mine being a Fazer, thanks to the fairing and the aerodynamic front,I reached 117kmph but couldn't achieve more as was very scared of suprise elements (daydreaming villagers n dogs) on the road.

                      • I did maximum of 104 km/hr with doubles. Nearly 140kg load with pillion.

Hello there, welcome to this group... i have a Fazer and i travel quite often from kolkata - durgapur - kolkata... Average speed maintained is 90-95... at speed of 125-126 which i attain occasionally ... never felt this woobling effect that you mentioned... more over i will say that while overtaking a lorry at high speeds when other bikes gets dis balanced or rather gets a push side ways.... fazer is quite stable at such conditions... i am not quite sure about FZ.. but one thing i will suggest you ... when you are riding at high speed try to duck... as that would lessen the swirling effect and hence reduce the drag and maybe the instability issue ..... happy riding....
Life is like riding a motorcycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving,to move forward you must throtle...
