  • Hello Riders..
recently got my Unicorn its CB Unicorn now...still in its initial phase has clocked 260kms...i have touched the 60 barrier few occasions but havn't gone beyond it...and also the rpm has not breached 4200rpm on any gear...am i fine with the running method for my bike...if i do a "rough" calculations i hav got >50 mileage till now...
    i hav few queries here...
    1. my frnds bike Unicorn & pulsar makes engine cooling noise (tik tik) after engine off(5km running) but i hav not observed tat on the new model CB Unicorn
    2. the initial pickup is just about ok(splendors zoom past me)..i guess tis wil change after the first service...am I rite?
    3. the 20-50 pickup is fantastic but 50-60 not very impressive or is it tat i dont raise enough, i havnt done a full throttle yet max was close to some 60% may be...

    waiting for some replies

    regards

Just "edit" the old post to add the new lines, no need to create a new post.

Th shaking is perhaps due to bad wheel alignment. Also, when you brake, use both the brakes in a 70:30 ratio. 70% front brake, and 30% rear brake. That will create a more uniform braking action and stopping will be a lot smoother. The reason with the 70-30 ratio is because front braking acts as a "push" stopper which is more effective than rear braking which is a "pull" stopper. Combination of the 2 brakes in the 70-30 ratio provides the best and uniform stopping motion.

you may end up getting milage a bit less.

my Uni gives 48-50 KMPL and reaches 80 just like that with pillion rider, (85+60)Kg
Yeah, I intend to tune my bird for some extra power. And I could use a better horn. My next target is a trip to Leh in March-April of 2011 and I want my bike to be in shape by then properly

                Hi Raghav,
                Congrats on the wings!
Don't worry about Splendors zooming past right now. You know you can outrun them when your engine is ready. Just complete the run-in period patiently.
For really fantastic pick-up, on my Unicorn I go through the gears this way:
                0-10: 1st gear
                10-30: 2nd gear
                30-50: 3rd gear
                50-70: 4th gear
                70+: 5th gear

The RPMs max out at the top ends of the ranges mentioned above. Try this only when your run-in is over though!
BTW, it is in the 70+ speed range i find my stock Unicorn lacking in pick-up. Till then it's a leopard. Beyond it, it takes it's own time to reach 100.

                • thanks for replying locusjag...
i have one more query, wats the rear tyre pressure recommended...the manual says 29psi cold temperature...wen i went to the petrol pump he filled it with 35 saying its common for all bikes dint listen to me...but since then noticed the ride has become further smooth and also some noticiable change in pickup
how much do u guys fill it with...

It should be somewhere mentioned in the manual or they may put it in a sticker near the back wheel (may be on the chain cover)

Front wheel 25 psi (Single and pillion)
Back Wheel 29 psi (Single rider), 32 (with Pillion Rider).

Play with your bike but remember its new so keep an eye on RPM

                    • Front tyre 25, Rear tyre 29
these numbers are for cold tyre (when run less than a Km or 2)

You may increase rear tyre pressure to 32 if you ride very often with pillion who is quite heavy.

do not listen to petrol pump guys, stick to whats recommended

                          Hi all,
tis is to all those unicorn riders...i own a CB Unicorn and had the first service done last week since i wanted to do the runin properly i never crossed 60, after the first service i tried to cross 65 barrier today on the way to my office. i hear lot of plp speaking abt the vibrations tat is very minimal in Unicorn compared to other bikes..but today at 65 i felt vibrations at >5K rpm but the same do not exist if i am <5K at the same speed..
do u guys also hav some vibrations for >5K rpm or am i just being sensitive here in this case..
i hav plans to hit 80-90 or may b 100kmph after 1500kms or may be after second service but with today's experience i am a bit apprehensive to even cross 75.
expecting some replys frm the experienced Unicorn lovers/riders(ones who vouch for Unicorn)

no need to worry too much dude . vibrations will become less as your bike runs , and if there is too much vibs just check the engine mounting bolts if they have become loose

I've always felt vibes between 60 Kmph and 80 Kmph. Beyond 80 it just gets better but the engine's strain gets noticeable but ride quality is good then compared to the 60-80 range. I never quite worried about it. Because these vibes don't shake you like an RTR's vibes do (pardon the direct attack on a wonderful racing machine!)
In fact, I rode all day at 60-80 Kmph and I was not worse off at the end of 460 Km...
