Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
that's a pretty large error of nearly 8-10 %Originally posted by Ron Syl View Postspeedo indicated speeds differ from each bike. mine went upto 153kmph. few others went upto 152 or 150 or 145 etc etc.
where as the true speed is supposed to be between 135-140kmph (vbox indicated) .
anyone knows for sure (via some definitive measurements) if the speedo errors in bikes are so large throughout the speed spectrum, or only when a bike is nearing its top speeding capability ? i mean when my speedo shows, say, 100 or 120 or 130, does that mean there's 8-10 % error in that speed too (in which case when the speedo is showing 120 i am actually doing about 110 or so) ? i have not been able to find out the answer to this question with surity, BUT based on several average speed measurements that i have done on that empty expressway near my city, it seems when it show 120 for instance it really is doing pretty much 120...so based on that so far i believe at those kind of speeds (say 80 % of the possible top speed) the speedo seems to be accurate enough... dont know how its accuracy precisely goes down as it nears and crosses 130-135 (on the speedo) or so...someone else is needed to make a large set of measurements of all kinds while i am ripping the bike on that expressway...Last edited by aditya_YZF-R15; 10-23-2013, 07:30 PM.

yes. most bikes have speedo errors. nothing new in that.Originally posted by aditya_YZF-R15 View Postthat's a pretty large error of nearly 8-10 %

R15 has 9% approx speedo error. it varies from 5 to 9%. i remember abhishek sarcar telling me that when he was doing 100 kmph with the vbox in the bike, the vbox showed around 94kmph. so as the speed increased the error increased.'On the Road that never ends...'

no i knew that bikes have speedo errors, but didnt know it can be as large as nearly 10 %
even in today's technology...5 % or so i thought was the worst case scenario (like when approaching top speed)...but according to that vbox reading of your friend, just at 100 kmph (speedo) it's already 5-6 %

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Speed can also be checked using gps. If you have gps enabled phone get an speedometer app put the phn in your pocket and go for it. It records highest speed atained. I have not tried itOriginally posted by aditya_YZF-R15 View Postno i knew that bikes have speedo errors, but didnt know it can be as large as nearly 10 %

vbox too is a GPS based data logger.Originally posted by sidmall View PostSpeed can also be checked using gps. If you have gps enabled phone get an speedometer app put the phn in your pocket and go for it. It records highest speed atained. I have not tried it

for better understanding. there is a small para on error. ". Vehicle manufacturers usually calibrate speedometers to read high by an amount equal to the average error, to ensure that their speedometers never indicate a lower speed than the actual speed of the vehicle, to ensure they are not liable for drivers violating speed limits".
for everything else there is "google".
not necessarily. even the gps in phones are not very accurate. they work of the nearest signal towers and its takes some time for those devices to get the proper reading. so cant trust them. i had got top of 145kmph on gps and i was doing 152kmph.Originally posted by sidmall View PostSpeed can also be checked using gps. and also i have got 134kmph, 140kmph too. the conditions were different in each riding. heavy breeze or less breeze etc etc.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
10% is the permissible speedo error limit. The real R15 top speed is reported to be 135kmph whereas speedo indicates a little over 150kmph.Originally posted by aditya_YZF-R15 View Postno i knew that bikes have speedo errors, but didnt know it can be as large as nearly 10 %

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Hi,
Some basics are missing with the top speed spectrum, rider with less weight can reach high speed soon and also gets more top end numbers in comparison with heavy riders on same bike.
My weight is 84, i did went upto 145km/h and my friend goes sooner and achieve more high end speed.
That is why i do not win the drag race with my friend as he is best as me in riding skills and weights 45. ;-)
Ron syle is right about the GPS on mobile which depends on network, i checked the speed difference on my windows phone App,
When i was at 54km/h on my Bike, mobile showed 49km/h and when the network tower changes, the mobile speedometer hangs for sometime.Last edited by Princepaji; 10-24-2013, 06:09 PM.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
that's clever actually. with that reason plus all kinds of physical factors playing their roles when one is riding a bike, i guess 10 % is reasonable albeit a bit large an error margin.Originally posted by Ron Syl View Post"Vehicle manufacturers usually calibrate speedometers to read high by an amount equal to the average error, to ensure that their speedometers never indicate a lower speed than the actual speed of the vehicle, to ensure they are not liable for drivers violating speed limits".
error of course increases and nears its max when one is top speeding and gradually approaching the bike's max speed capability (say post 130-135 on the speedo)...there i am sure it's pretty much 10 %..but in the range 90-120 or so i guess it's no more than 5% usually.
anyway..it's the mind's perception of being in high speed or acceleration that matters most as that is what we feel...the actual value of the speed is just a number for measurement purposes...

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
btw had second service today, at 2530 or so kms on the odo...they didnt even wash it all that properly, and polishing was worse...but as long as it's not looking too dirty and uncared for i dont mind, so didnt bother to say anything about it...
am soon sticking a rim tape on my wheels, but unable to decide what colour would suit the most - blue or green..any suggestions from people with vivid graphical sense ? blue would seem to be an obvious one, but then green also seems pretty nice looking in my mind...red or yellow tape surely too funky on a racing blue R15.

Inknow that the ASC are irresponsible when it comes to washing and polishing of bike. All you can do is order them to work on your bike and pay like 20-50 bugs.Originally posted by aditya_YZF-R15 View Postbtw had second service today, at 2530 or so kms on the odo...they didnt even wash it all that properly, and polishing was worse...but as long as it's not looking too dirty and uncared for i dont mind, so didnt bother to say anything about it...

Rim tape blue looks decent and good.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Took delivery of my Thundering Green R15 today and Im very excited. Did a thorough pdi before taking delivery. Took it for a spin to ensure everything was proper. Then rode off home. The ride is super smooth and attracted quite a few heads on the way
Filled up the tires with nitrogen as well. Will be doing a more detailed review once I complete the run in. Currently Im babying the bike
sadly I forgot to take pics in all the excitement
