  • Fork Leaking Oil !!!

Today evening when I parked my Duke, I noticed some kind of thread looping around the right fork creating a big mess. Thinking it was some junk that i caught from the road, I started removing it with a scissors; that is when I noticed there were patches of oil on the wheel. Checking further I saw that there was oil on the right fork where as the left fork was dry, also I noticed some oil spray on the spokes.
I am afraid the fork seal is damaged.

In case the fork seal is damaged should I get it fixed or should I insist on replacing the whole fork.

First service still not done, 960 kms, was planning for servicing tomorrow. I have never fallen into a huge pothole or went airborne (speed breakers or otherwise). I cannot think of any way I could have damaged the forks.
Also thinking about it, I feel that the thread that I removed from the fork could have been some part from the fork itself.
To diagnose the issue without any doubt,
I cleaned the fork and wheel with a cloth, then sprayed some dirt on the wheel and parked it. I will check the wheel for oil drips tomorrow morning which will confirm the damaged seal and go straight to the service centre.

      1. Are you sure front fork seals are damaged? Do you see an oil trail?

      2. You may want to attend the Hands-on DIY session at Auto Service Banashankari on Saturday. Enroll yourself at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...ngtMXl5VlA2VFE and have them look into this.

I saw oil patches on the wheel, Also I could see oil on the fork just above the part where it is connected to the tyre

I would love to attend the DIY. I do not have permission to view/edit the document.
Edit: I have sent request to edit the document, please check.

          • I am planning to visit Khivraj, Indiranagar, tomorrow as it is closest to me

Please advise how to proceed, in case the seal is really damaged.
Should I ask for replacement of whole fork or just fix the seal.

1 - Can you please post pictures of the leakage?

2 - if the seal is damaged - you could've hit a pot hole really hard (check for wheel damage too) and they will replace the seal. However if you want the whole fork replaced - why not? (be prepared for a nice chubby bill though)

On a serious note - Have them check the fork thoroughly though.

I have a couple of pics, but I am not sure if is very clear. Also I had cleaned most of the the fork.

The images are big, smaller ones do not have enough details.

Replacing the oil seal + fork oil would be sufficient no need to change the fork.

                  • Good news the fork seal will be.replaced under warranty will get the bike tomorrow.
From what I came to know this is one problem common with used forks. Dust/pebbles kicked up by tyres are sucked into the fork causing damage to seal

I may not be a professional rider, but I still can suggest u the way to deal with high speed stablitiy atleast on the Duke...

I think its gotta do with your riding position, When you cross 90kmph, the wind resistance will b very high and U need to modify yourself for a more aerodynamic posture... lik this...

Tats just an example, In duke your elbows wd b facing upwards like a the wings of spirit of ecstasy on the hood of a Rolls Royce phantom, lean forward completely as if you intend to put all your weight on the front wheel..& you grab your tank firmly (not too tight though) and use your helmet to deflect the air blast...tats it...I bet you can do 138kmph with ease and the bike wont wobble or shake even a bit...

I have NVR EVER faced high speed instability & i have done 138kmph many times using the same trick...BUT one disadvantage though, once you take up tat crouch position you cant see the rear view mirrors and you need to keep your lane and never think of changing it...Try it and let me know...if it works for u...

                        • First Service odo: 1010

I got my first service from Kirti Nagar Delhi today, after gulping 1.5L of Motul 7100 FS oil it feels different. There is no change in the engine noise however the bike revs faster. There was a Bajaj engineer who had flown in specially from Pune to take a look at a Duke. The guy claimed that the coolant was mixing with engine oil. The engineer did not find any evidence of that.

List of jobs done on my bike:

                          Chain cleaned and Lubed
Air filter sprayed with pressurized air
Brake pads removed and cleaned with sand paper
Suspension moved to the softest possible setting(my request)
Head Oil leakage ( the head cover was removed, cleaned and re fitted with a black sealing compound)
Engine oil changed to Motul FS
                          Washing and drying
                          ECU error codes checked
                          Service meter reset

The Engineer from Bajaj inspected the bike and I insisted the kind man to test ride my bike. He said everything was ok but I should not rev the bike hard till about 2000-3000Kms
I asked him about the tappet noise and he said it was generic to this engine. He said the clearances had been kept high due to the high reving nature of the engine.

I will wait for some time before I can see the head oil leakage fix.

Total cost of the service was Rs 196 as I had sourced the oil myself.

bro.. even i did the same thing to cut the wind blast..

But the bike was still wobbling.. I had to hold the handle very hard to keep it going outta control..

The rear tyre was shaking a lot..
